How to Make Website Thumbnails for a SaaS Products Directory

A practical guide to generating, storing, and refreshing consistent website thumbnails for a SaaS products directory.

Generate each thumbnail by rendering the product’s public homepage at a consistent browser viewport, then save the resulting image with the directory listing. For a production directory, use a repeatable capture pipeline: define the card’s aspect ratio and viewport, capture the first screen or a deliberate element, store the image in durable storage, and refresh it without replacing a working thumbnail until its successor succeeds.

Choose what each thumbnail should show

Start with the image contract for your directory card: its aspect ratio, displayed dimensions, and whether it should show the first browser viewport or the whole page. A first-screen capture is usually the more recognizable preview in a compact directory card; full-page capture is more useful when the goal is a complete-page record rather than a small visual preview.

Use the same viewport for every listing so the previews are comparable. OpenGraph.io documents presets ranging from 375 × 812 to 1920 × 1080, including 1024 × 768 and 1366 × 768. These are vendor-provided presets, not a universal standard; choose dimensions that suit your card design and the browsing context you want to represent. OpenGraph.io’s screenshot API documentation describes its viewport and capture options.

Match the capture to the card

  • Viewport capture: Shows what fits in the configured browser window. It is a sensible default for a directory preview.
  • Full-page capture: Includes content below the initial viewport. Use it when the full page matters, bearing in mind that the resulting image may be difficult to read when reduced to card size.
  • Element capture: Captures a selected CSS element where the tool supports selectors. This can isolate a product’s hero or another useful region, but selectors depend on the target site’s markup and may break when that site changes.

Choose a capture workflow

The right approach depends on how much of the pipeline you want to operate. The documented product features below are vendor descriptions, not independent performance or reliability comparisons.

Approach Good fit Documented capabilities What you need to check
ScreenshotNeo hosted API A directory that needs configurable captures and a straightforward request-based integration. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its feature set includes full-page and CSS-selector capture, image resizing, caching with a chosen TTL, and bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call. Test representative sites and choose appropriate concurrency, retries, storage, and refresh behavior for your application.
OpenGraph.io hosted screenshot API A hosted URL-to-image workflow with documented viewport, output-format, full-page, and selector controls. Its documentation lists JPEG, PNG, and WebP, dimensions, selector and exclusion-selector options, dark mode, and capture delay. Its example screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours, so download or cache the image if the directory needs a durable asset. Verify current pricing, limits, and terms.
shot-scraper batch command-line tool A builder who wants to run and operate capture jobs directly. The documentation shows multiple URL jobs configured in YAML, plus selector capture and higher pixel-density options. You must arrange execution, image storage, retries, and refresh scheduling. Operational effort was not independently benchmarked.
ScreenshotEngine evergreen service A directory looking for recurring thumbnail refreshes. The vendor describes daily or weekly recaptures and keeping the last successful screenshot available if a refresh fails. Confirm supported destinations, refresh limits, stale-image behavior, pricing, and service terms before relying on it.
CaptureAPI A directory needing a documented grouped capture request, or branded generated cards instead of faithful live-site previews. Its use-case page demonstrates sending multiple URLs with width, height, and WebP settings; it also describes template-based dynamic Open Graph image generation. Template-generated cards are not necessarily screenshots of the live homepage. Verify current pricing and limits.

For a faithful website preview, use a screenshot capture workflow rather than a template-generated card. CaptureAPI’s directory-thumbnail example uses a 400 × 300 WebP output; treat that as an example configuration, not a universal optimum.

Build the capture pipeline

1. Store a clear image contract with each listing

Record the target URL, chosen viewport, output format, and any selector or crop setting alongside the listing. Keep these settings consistent across products unless a particular site requires an intentional exception. Decide where the permanent image will live before relying on a capture service’s response URL.

2. Capture the image

Use the same request settings for each public homepage. If you capture an element, test its selector against actual pages and have a fallback, such as a viewport capture, for sites where the selector does not match. If the source page loads content late, use a supported wait condition or delay rather than assuming an immediate capture will include it.

3. Persist and serve a durable asset

Save the returned image to storage your directory controls, then store that asset’s stable reference in the listing record. Do not assume a hosted API’s response URL is permanent: OpenGraph.io says its example screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours and advises downloading or caching images intended for longer retention. Compress or resize to suit the actual card dimensions, while checking that logos and other important details remain legible.

4. Refresh safely

Product homepages change, so a scheduled refresh can keep previews representative. Keep the current successful asset in place while generating a replacement; switch the listing to the new image only after the capture and storage steps both succeed. ScreenshotEngine describes daily or weekly refreshes and retention of the last successful image after a failed refresh, but verify the actual service behavior and terms before depending on it. ScreenshotEngine’s service information describes its evergreen screenshot offering.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

For one thumbnail, make a GET request and write the returned image to a file. Replace the example URL with the product homepage and set the requested output format as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same endpoint can be called from application code. These examples write the response body to a local image file; production code should also check the HTTP status and handle errors before updating a listing.

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
with open("shot.webp", "wb") as f:
    f.write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
  url: 'https://stripe.com'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('shot.webp', res);

ScreenshotNeo’s Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Its current plan list is on ScreenshotNeo. Sign up for free and get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Handle multiple URLs and refreshes

For a catalog, treat capture as a background job rather than making visitors wait for a screenshot. Keep track of each listing’s last successful image and the status of its latest capture. ScreenshotNeo supports bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call and asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks; shot-scraper’s documentation shows a YAML-based multi-URL job. shot-scraper documentation covers its batch configuration.

  • Queue new listings and scheduled recaptures so a large refresh does not overwhelm your application or the target sites.
  • Limit parallel captures according to the service’s documented limits and your own operational capacity; do not assume an undocumented rate limit.
  • Retry transient failures with a bounded policy, and retain the last good image if a new capture fails.
  • Record capture time and result so stale images and repeated failures can be identified.
  • Keep provider credentials server-side. Do not expose API keys in directory page HTML or public client-side code.

Troubleshoot missing or poor thumbnails

The image is blank or incomplete

The page may not have finished rendering, or the relevant content may be loaded only after scrolling or interaction. Use the provider’s supported wait-for-selector, delay, or network-idle option as appropriate, and try a full-page capture if the required content is below the fold. Recheck the page manually when the problem persists: protected sites, bot checks, or login requirements can prevent a public screenshot workflow from seeing the expected page.

The capture contains a banner, popup, or chat panel

Check whether the capture tool supports consent handling, popup removal, CSS selectors, or custom CSS, and make sure those options are enabled for the request. A selector-based hide rule can be useful, but validate it on several pages because site markup is not uniform.

The thumbnail is cropped or hard to recognize

Compare the capture dimensions and aspect ratio with the rendered card. A mismatched ratio can crop important content or leave unused space. Try a consistent viewport and a deliberate element selector; if the card is small, prefer a recognizable first-screen view over a full-page image.

The saved image later stops loading

Check whether the URL is temporary. OpenGraph.io documents a 24-hour expiry for example screenshot URLs; download or cache the image and update the listing to point to your durable copy.

A refresh failure removes a working image

Do not overwrite the live asset before the new capture has succeeded and been stored. Keep a last-good reference, log the failed job, and retry according to a bounded policy. Confirm any hosted service’s stated failure-retention behavior before making it part of your availability plan.

Cost and reliability decisions

There is no independent comparison here of vendor pricing, throughput, uptime, or capture success across a representative set of SaaS sites. Compare providers against your own catalog and expected refresh frequency. Check current plan prices, request limits, retention, supported options, and terms directly before committing; vendor feature pages establish documented capabilities, not which option will be cheapest or most reliable for your workload.

A practical evaluation should run a representative sample that includes fast and slow homepages, consent banners, long pages, and any sites likely to block automated access. Compare whether the resulting images fit the card, whether the assets remain available after capture, and how your pipeline behaves when a capture fails. Do not infer directory conversion impact or thumbnail effectiveness from the fact that a screenshot can be generated; no independent effect statistic is established here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a directory thumbnail be a screenshot or a designed Open Graph card?

Use a screenshot when the card should faithfully preview the live product homepage. Use a template-based Open Graph image when the goal is a branded graphic assembled from listing data rather than a rendered view of the site.

Can I capture pages that require a login?

The documented material establishes URL-based capture of public websites, not a universal ability to access login-protected pages. Test the exact destination and check the selected provider’s current authentication and terms.

How often should a directory recapture thumbnails?

There is no universal interval established for all directories. Choose a schedule based on how quickly the listed homepages change and your capture budget, then retain the last successful image when a refresh fails.
