The ProDesk 400 G4 Mini’s electricity cost depends on the average power your complete setup draws at the wall while the stream is running and your local price per kilowatt-hour. HP’s published figures are for specific operating states such as idle, sleep and off—not YouTube streaming—so the model name alone cannot give you a reliable stream-cost figure.
Calculate the cost for your setup
For continuous operation across a 365-day year:
- Annual electricity use (kWh) = average watts × 8.76
- Annual cost = annual kWh × your electricity price per kWh
The 8.76 factor represents 24 hours × 365 days ÷ 1,000, converting watts to kilowatt-hours. For example, at an assumed average draw of 10 W and an assumed rate of $0.15/kWh, the calculation is 10 × 8.76 = 87.6 kWh per year, then 87.6 × $0.15 = $13.14 per year. This is an illustration, not a measured cost for a ProDesk stream or a statement of your tariff.

These are model-family test figures, not a promise about every configuration. HP notes that availability and configurations vary by country. ServeTheHome reported 10–11 W idle for its tested quad-core unit in 2020; that result describes one system at idle, not a universal rating or a stream test. Measure the real 24/7 draw
A plug-in watt meter or electricity usage meter is the straightforward way to estimate your actual cost. Measure while your stream is running in its usual quality and configuration, long enough to capture a representative average. If the meter records kWh over a known interval, use that consumption to estimate a year only if the interval reflects your normal, continuous operating pattern.

- Connect the meter between the wall outlet and the equipment you want to include.
- Run the YouTube stream in its normal configuration and note the meter’s average watts, or its kWh reading and the elapsed time.
- Decide what the estimate covers. For the PC alone, measure only the PC. To include a display, speakers or other peripherals, include them in the measured setup.
- Apply the formulas above using your measured average watts and your bill’s applicable per-kWh rate.
For a meter reading in kWh over a known interval, first divide the measured kWh by the interval’s hours to get average kW; multiply by 1,000 for watts. Then annualize using the continuous-operation formula. Do not annualize a short or atypical interval as though it represented your usual stream if the equipment or stream conditions change substantially.
Why your result can differ
- Idle is not streaming: an idle benchmark cannot establish playback draw. The stream workload and configuration must be measured while active.
- Hardware varies: the processor and other components can differ between units. HP’s state-specific ranges and ServeTheHome’s single tested idle result illustrate why no one reference number should be treated as yours.
- Measurement scope matters: a display and peripherals add to the total if they are powered during the stream and included in the measurement.
- Electricity rates vary: a wattage estimate becomes a cost only after applying your own price per kWh and the same time period.
