For a polished Framer portfolio, connect each project card to an image field in your CMS, then choose whether the grid should crop images to a shared shape or preserve their original proportions. Set social-sharing previews separately: they use page metadata, not the card’s visual layout, and can draw from a different CMS image field.
What counts as a portfolio thumbnail?
“Thumbnail” can mean two different things in a Framer portfolio:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Portfolio card image: The image displayed in a collection list or project card on your site. Its size and crop are controlled by your page layout.
- Social preview image: The metadata image shown when someone shares a project URL on services such as X, LinkedIn, Slack, or messaging apps. It is set in page settings and can use a separate CMS image choice.
Framer’s guidance for image sizing and layout is at Using images in Framer; its social-preview steps are in How to update page titles, descriptions, and social images.
How do I make a different thumbnail for each Framer CMS project?
- Add an image field: In the portfolio collection, add an Image field, for example “Cover image,” and upload the right image to each project item.
- Bind the card image: In the portfolio Collection List, select the image layer and connect it to the collection’s Cover image field. A static image placed on the CMS template without a field connection can repeat on every project page; the CMS binding makes the image vary with each item.
- Check multiple projects: Preview several items and confirm each card shows its own image rather than a repeated template image.
Keep portfolio images and project data in the CMS when they need to vary by item. A static template image is useful only when every project should deliberately share that same visual.

Choose a consistent crop or preserve each image’s proportions
| Approach | How to set it up | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Shared aspect ratio | Place the image in a frame with a locked aspect ratio, then use a consistent crop and focal point. | You want an orderly grid whose cards align even when source images have different dimensions. Framer specifically identifies portfolio galleries as a suitable use for a fixed ratio. |
| Original proportions | Use a custom image component that preserves each image’s original dimensions and bind it to the CMS image field. | The composition of each project image matters more than uniform card heights. |
Framer does not prescribe one universal aspect ratio or pixel dimension for portfolio cards. Choose a ratio that suits the work and the page, keep important subjects inside the crop, and check the result at the actual card size. Use a consistent visual treatment across the collection without cropping away the details that distinguish a project.
Set a social preview for each project
A carefully designed card does not automatically determine what appears when its project URL is shared. To use a CMS image field for the social preview:

- Intuitive interface of a conventional FTP client
- Easy and Reliable FTP Site Maintenance.
- FTP Automation and Synchronization
- Open the CMS project page’s Page Settings.
- Go to Page images → Social preview.
- Choose CMS Variables, then select the image field to use for the preview.
- Inspect the result with Framer’s Link Preview tool.
Framer recommends a social-preview format of 1200 × 630 pixels and advises keeping important content centered. You can select the same field used for the portfolio card or create a separate CMS image field when a different crop works better for sharing.
Choose image resolution and check the page
For most images, Framer recommends Auto: it generates multiple sizes so the browser can select an appropriate one. The fixed-width options are Small (512 px), Medium (1024 px), and Large (2048 px); Framer says fixed sizes are rarely needed. If compression creates visible distortions, noise reduction, or banding, consider Auto (Lossless). Framer notes that lossless files may be 5–10× larger, so use it when the quality difference matters rather than as a blanket setting. See Framer’s image optimization guidance.

- Preview several CMS projects at the intended card size to catch incorrect field bindings, awkward crops, or inconsistent spacing.
- Check the portfolio at mobile widths as well as desktop; a crop that works in a wide grid may cut off the subject in a narrower layout.
- Use Link Preview to verify the social image and its composition before sharing the URL.
- If a social platform continues to show an older image after republishing, Framer identifies external caching as a common cause. Check what Framer serves in Link Preview; the platform may not refresh its cached copy immediately.

To capture a live reference page as an image, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. ScreenshotNeo also accepts the parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
