Choose an authorized data source before writing a monitor
For a price-monitoring project, first check whether Amazon’s current API program fits your use case. Amazon’s legacy PA-API introduction says it is no longer maintained and directs developers to Creators API; it also states that PA-API was to be deprecated on May 15, 2026. Do not treat a browser-based approach as interchangeable with an authorized API. The reviewed sources do not establish that automated scraping of Amazon.in retail product pages is permitted. When Puppeteer is appropriate
Puppeteer launches Chrome, navigates to a page, and lets your code inspect its rendered DOM. This is useful for a permitted page whose relevant content appears after client-side rendering. It does not provide authorization to automate a site, bypass access controls, or ignore rate limits. Keep collection within the permissions and terms that apply to your account and use case.
For an authorized page, wait for a page-specific price selector or readiness condition rather than assuming a fixed delay will be enough. Network idle can help, but it is only a heuristic: lazy-loaded content may appear later, and long-lived network requests can prevent the page from becoming idle. Install the runtime
Use a supported Node.js installation and pin your Puppeteer dependency so that browser upgrades are deliberate. Puppeteer’s headless mode is the default. The older headless implementation is distributed separately as chrome-headless-shell; Chrome’s documentation notes that its behavior does not completely match regular Chrome. Before persisting a numeric amount, normalize Indian number formatting deliberately, verify the expected currency, and test the parser against the specific page’s displayed format. Product markup can change, and a value that is absent or unparseable is a collection failure.
Use a product-specific readiness condition
Set PRICE_SELECTOR and TITLE_SELECTOR to selectors verified against the permitted page’s rendered DOM. A selector should identify the actual product offer, not a recommendation, a crossed-out list price, or a price elsewhere on the page. If content is lazy-loaded, wait for the relevant element or a page-specific condition. Do not rely on a long fixed sleep as the primary readiness test.

- Product identifier and the URL observed.
- Displayed amount text, parsed numeric amount, and currency when parsing has been validated.
- UTC observation timestamp.
- Source and parser version or selector configuration.
- Parse status, HTTP status, and a concise error category for failures.
Use timeouts, bounded retries with backoff, and structured logs. Alert on repeated missing selectors or unexpected page states, and review changes before resuming price writes. Do not insert a zero-price record for a timeout, a challenge, an unavailable product, an error page, or markup drift. These are engineering safeguards for an inherently changeable rendered page, not guarantees of uninterrupted collection.
Keep a record of the Puppeteer and browser versions used in deployment. Pin versions and test intentional upgrades: browser changes can affect rendering and page behavior. Add request pacing and caching only in ways allowed by the current terms that govern your collection. Legacy PA-API best-practice examples mention one-hour offer-data and one-day other-resource cache lifetimes, but those are legacy API values and must not be treated as current Creators API policy. Disclose API-derived price and availability data
Amazon.in’s Associates Operating Agreement includes timestamp and disclaimer requirements for covered API- or Data Feed-derived price or availability content. Its stated rule includes a date/time stamp adjacent to covered content when refreshes occur less often than hourly, with a same-day date-omission example, and a disclaimer adjacent to the content or provided by a similar method. Navigation times out
Check whether the URL is correct and permitted, whether the page returned a response, and whether the chosen navigation condition is too strict for a page with persistent requests. Prefer domcontentloaded followed by an explicit selector wait when suitable; retain a finite navigation timeout and log the failure instead of silently recording an observation.

The price selector never appears
Verify the selector against the current rendered DOM and confirm that the page is the intended product page. A changed layout, unavailable item, access challenge, or different offer state can all result in a missing selector. Treat the condition as a failed collection and investigate; do not work around access controls.
The selector appears but the value is wrong
Inspect whether the selector matches the primary offer rather than a recommendation, list price, or unrelated offer. Preserve the raw text, validate currency and number formatting, and reject ambiguous or unparsable values. A successful selector match is not proof that the extracted amount represents the desired price.
Network idle does not help
Network quiet is not proof that all relevant content has loaded. Prefer a specific visible selector or page condition. If the page maintains long-lived requests, an idle wait may not finish; if it lazy-loads later, network idle may finish too early.
Results change after a browser update
Keep Puppeteer and browser versions pinned, record them with observations, and test version changes against your permitted target page. The separate old headless shell is not behaviorally identical to regular Chrome, so do not assume it will produce the same rendering.
