Make directory thumbnails from the actual listing-card layout—not from a supposed India-wide or Google-mandated image size. Choose a clear, rights-cleared business photo, crop it so the business remains recognizable at the card’s displayed size, and export responsive, compressed versions where needed. Then use standard HTML image markup, useful alt text, and the directory’s own moderation rules.
Choose a photo that represents the business
Start with a current photo supplied by the business or taken with permission. Use an exterior or sign for a location-led listing, a product or service in context when that better explains the business, or a logo when the directory’s design calls for one. A small thumbnail has little room for detail, so prioritize one recognizable subject rather than a busy scene.

Keep the original file and create a separate rendition for the listing card. The original gives you room to recrop later if the site design changes. Ask the business or photographer to confirm that the directory may publish the image; finding a photo online does not itself grant reuse rights.
Set dimensions from the directory card
There is no universal thumbnail dimension for business directories in India. The directory’s card design, responsive breakpoints, and display density determine the required pixel sizes. Google’s image guidance recommends responsive image techniques rather than prescribing one directory-thumbnail size: Google image SEO guidance.

- Inspect listing cards at their actual mobile and desktop widths.
- Choose a consistent aspect ratio that fits the card. Square is one possible design choice, not a platform standard.
- Crop each image around the feature that identifies the business—such as a storefront sign or product—and check it at the small size where users will see it.
- Export a card-sized rendition. If the listing also has a larger image view, export a separate larger rendition rather than making every card download the original.
- If mobile and desktop layouts need materially different sizes, provide responsive sources with
srcsetor<picture>, plus a fallbacksrc. Keep the framing consistent across variants.
Pick a format and compress the export
Use a format your site, browsers, and image-delivery pipeline handle correctly. Google Search documents support for BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF when referenced from an image element’s src; make the filename extension match the actual file type. For ordinary business photographs, JPEG, WebP, or AVIF is generally a more suitable raster choice than SVG, which is vector markup. Compress the card rendition, then inspect it at its displayed size. Google reports that lossless WebP files are 26% smaller than PNG files, and lossy WebP files are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index. These are publisher-reported comparisons with no year stated on the documentation page, not guaranteed savings for your directory images: Google WebP documentation. Add the thumbnail accessibly and make it discoverable
Use an HTML <img> in the relevant listing context, close to the business name and useful listing details. Google says it can find images in an image element’s src; CSS background images are not indexed as image content. A responsive example is:

</picture>This example assumes square renditions and paths on your own site; change the dimensions, paths, and sizes value to match the real card layout. The fallback URL in src should point to a valid image. Use concise alt text that describes what the image actually shows—for example, the sample text only fits a photo that really depicts that storefront. Do not stuff every city and service keyword into alt text. If an image is purely decorative and adds no information, use empty alt text (alt=""). Use descriptive filenames and a caption only when it adds information not already present in the listing. An image sitemap can provide image URLs crawlers might not otherwise discover; if a CDN hosts your images, Google says you can verify that CDN domain in Search Console to receive crawl-error information. Neither step guarantees indexing. Google may choose previews automatically; og:image or suitable structured data such as primaryImageOfPage can indicate a preferred image, but cannot force Google to select it. Clear image rights and preserve credit information
Keep a record of who supplied or created each image and the applicable permission or license terms. Google’s image metadata guidance describes conveying creator, credit, copyright, license, and license-acquisition information through structured data or IPTC photo metadata. It cautions that removing metadata can have legal implications in some jurisdictions and recommends retaining critical rights and identification fields when possible: Google image metadata guidance.

This guidance does not determine whether a particular image may legally be reused under Indian law. If the rights are unclear, obtain permission or use another image.
Treat Google Business Profile as a separate destination
A directory thumbnail and a Google Business Profile photo have different requirements. For its own Business Profile uploads, Google specifies JPG or PNG, 10 KB–5 MB, a recommended resolution of 720 × 720 px, and a minimum of 250 × 250 px. The profile must be verified before photos show on Google; submitted photos are reviewed, and processing may take 24–48 hours. These values apply to that Google product, not to your directory card; check Google’s current page before advising on an upload: Google Business Profile photo guidance.
Google advises that Business Profile photos be in focus and well lit, represent reality, and avoid significant alterations or excessive filters.
