Use the same browser viewport, capture mode and output scale for every screenshot, then set a consistent display size in the report. Capture dimensions and report dimensions are separate: a fixed browser setup makes the image files more consistent, while the report layout determines how large they appear on the page.
Choose a consistent frame for every capture
First decide what each screenshot needs to show. A viewport capture records the visible browser area; a full-page capture extends through the scrollable document. Those modes produce different framing, so use one mode throughout a comparison set unless the report clearly labels why they differ.

- Use viewport capture when readers should compare the same visible portion of each site.
- Use full-page capture when the whole page is needed, accepting that pages with different lengths will have different image heights.
Set the browser dimensions and output scale
With Playwright, set a fixed viewport width and height before navigating to each site. Responsive layouts can change when the viewport changes, which is why the Playwright documentation recommends setting it before navigation. Use the same values for every page.

Also choose an output scale explicitly. Playwright’s page screenshot API supports scale: "css", which produces one image pixel per CSS pixel, and scale: "device", which follows device pixels and can produce larger images on high-DPI displays. The documented default is device; specifying the scale avoids relying on that default when predictable dimensions matter. See the Playwright Page API.

Runnable Playwright example
This JavaScript example captures the same viewport dimensions and CSS-pixel scale for each URL. Install Playwright and its browser first, then save as capture.mjs and run with Node.js.

await browser.close();Replace the example URLs with the pages in your report. The viewport values are an example, not a universal report standard. Choose dimensions appropriate to the content and keep them fixed across the set. For whole-page captures, set fullPage: true; page heights will still vary with document length.

Keep rendering conditions stable
Matching width, height and scale does not guarantee pixel-identical rendering. Browser version, operating system, settings, hardware and headless mode can all affect appearance. For repeatable comparisons, run captures in the same browser environment as the baseline and avoid switching machines or browser versions mid-report. Playwright’s guidance on visual comparisons explains the importance of a consistent environment.

Playwright’s screenshot style option can apply CSS during capture, including hiding elements that are irrelevant to the report. Keep those changes limited to genuinely variable or distracting content so the screenshot still represents the page being documented. Make the screenshots fit the report
In the report editor, apply a common display width or height and preserve the image aspect ratio. That controls how large the images appear in the document; it does not change their captured pixel dimensions.

- Preserve the whole image: use a common width or height with the aspect ratio locked. Images with different aspect ratios will not fill identical rectangular boxes.
- Use a common frame: crop images or add padding/letterboxing if identical box dimensions are more important than showing every edge at its original framing.
There is no universal pixel size that suits every report. Choose the displayed dimensions based on the page layout and any publication requirements, and avoid stretching images out of proportion.

Troubleshooting size mismatches
- Files have different pixel widths or heights: confirm the viewport is set to the same width and height before navigation, that every capture uses the same viewport/full-page mode, and that the output scale is explicitly set.
- One file is much larger on a high-DPI machine: check whether captures use device-pixel rather than CSS-pixel scale. Choose one scale and use it consistently.
- Page content looks rearranged: verify that the viewport was set before navigation; responsive pages may have loaded in a different layout.
- Images have identical dimensions but look different: pin the browser and execution environment, and account for dynamic page content.
- Images fit the page but not the same rectangular frame: set a common displayed width or height; if the report requires identical boxes, crop or pad while preserving the image’s aspect ratio.
