Use Playwright if you want to own the browser and image-processing workflow; use a hosted screenshot API if you prefer a managed capture endpoint. In either case, capture in a background job, keep the last successful image when a refresh fails, and provide a fallback for listings without a usable preview.
Choose what your directory preview should show
A live website screenshot and an Open Graph image are different things. A screenshot renders the page as a visitor would see it at a chosen viewport. An Open Graph image is metadata selected by the site publisher and may be promotional artwork rather than a view of the live interface. The Open Graph protocol defines metadata for representing page objects, including image data: Open Graph protocol.

- Use a screenshot when the purpose is to show what visiting the startup’s site looks like.
- Consider an Open Graph image as a lighter-weight alternative when it suits the card, but inspect it before displaying it. ScreenshotAPI notes that some sites lack an
og:imageand that declared images may not resemble the current interface: ScreenshotAPI’s directory workflow. - Offer a neutral fallback when neither source produces a useful image.
Build the capture-and-display workflow
- Accept and normalize the submitted URL. Validate its syntax and apply server-side protections before your system fetches a user-supplied destination. The technical capture documentation cited here does not prescribe a security design, so choose safeguards appropriate to your application and deployment.
- Queue the capture outside the submission request. A slow or unavailable site should not make a startup submission wait on browser rendering. A background queue is an implementation recommendation for this workflow, not a requirement specified by the cited vendors.
- Capture the page. Use a browser you operate, such as Playwright, or a hosted screenshot API. Select a fixed viewport for directory cards; capture the full page only when below-the-fold content is useful at thumbnail size.
- Store the image and listing metadata. Save the result in object storage or behind a CDN, and record its storage key and capture time with the startup listing. ScreenshotAPI’s directory example follows a capture, storage, display, and refresh workflow: ScreenshotAPI directory guide.
- Render consistently. Give cards a shared image frame and crop policy so previews do not cause uneven layouts. The documentation describes capture modes, but does not establish a best thumbnail aspect ratio; choose one that fits your own card design.
- Refresh deliberately. Schedule periodic refreshes or trigger one when a listing’s URL changes. Keep the last successful preview if a later capture fails, and display your fallback only when no successful image exists.
Capture with Playwright
Playwright’s Page API supports screenshots of the current viewport, the full scrollable page, an element, or an in-memory image buffer. Its documentation also describes output format, quality, scale, and styles: Playwright screenshot guide and Page screenshot API.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInstall and capture a viewport screenshot
Install Playwright and its browser dependencies using the instructions for your environment in the official Playwright documentation. This Node.js example captures a fixed viewport and writes a WebP file:

- It can be a gift option
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1366, height: 768 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle',
timeout: 30000,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'startup-preview.webp', type: 'webp' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Replace the example URL with the listing’s validated destination. A fixed viewport makes framing more consistent; it does not guarantee that every site will finish rendering or that all its dynamic content will be present when the screenshot is taken.
Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture
- Viewport: captures what fits in the configured browser window. This is usually the most legible choice for a compact directory card.
- Full page: captures content beyond the initial viewport. A long page can become difficult to read once reduced to card size.
- Element: captures a selected element when a particular page region is the intended preview. It depends on the selector being present and matching the right element.
Playwright documents these screenshot modes and options such as file type, quality, scale, injected styles, and returning image data: Playwright screenshot guide and Page screenshot API. PNG, JPEG, and WebP are documented output choices. Pick a format that fits your storage and delivery requirements, and handle unsupported or failed captures in the job worker.
Use a hosted screenshot API instead
A hosted API can remove the need for your team to run browser capture infrastructure, but it does not remove the need to design storage, retries, refresh policy, and service-dependency handling. Compare the exact controls and terms you need before choosing a vendor. For example, OpenGraph.io documents viewport presets, capture delay, a cookie-banner option, and parameters for dimensions, selectors, full-page capture, and output format: OpenGraph.io documentation. Its listed presets include 375 × 812, 1024 × 768, 1366 × 768, and 1920 × 1080; these are that vendor’s presets, not universal standards. Verify current pricing, quotas, regional availability, retention, and terms directly with any provider.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. Its capture workflow accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and the example domain with the submitted listing URL. Store the response in your image storage and associate it with the listing rather than fetching it each time a directory page loads. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Make previews consistent and dependable
Set a viewport and crop policy
Choose one viewport for your cards and use it consistently. A vendor’s available presets are not a design recommendation: test how real listings appear in your own card layout. Keep viewport captures for compact previews; use full-page screenshots only when the extra content remains meaningful at the displayed size.
Handle consent banners and dynamic pages
Consent dialogs, delayed content, and other overlays can dominate a screenshot. A capture delay or a vendor-specific banner option may help, but behavior and coverage vary by provider. With a browser you control, decide what page-ready condition is appropriate rather than assuming every page reaches a stable state at the same time. For third-party capture, check how the chosen service treats consent interfaces and failed or blocked pages.
Cache and refresh outside page views
Do not launch a new browser capture every time someone opens a directory page. Save previews and serve them as ordinary stored assets, using a scheduled or event-triggered background job to refresh them. ScreenshotAPI’s directory guide describes periodic refreshes and CDN delivery: ScreenshotAPI directory guide.

Troubleshoot common preview problems
The capture is blank or incomplete
The destination may be unavailable, slow, or dependent on content that appears after the initial page load. Check the URL and the job’s browser or API result, then adjust the readiness condition or capture timing if appropriate. Keep the previous successful preview rather than replacing it with an empty image.

A consent dialog or popup covers the page
Some capture options address cookie banners, but their behavior is vendor-specific. Check the selected tool’s documentation and settings. Do not assume an option handles every consent platform or other overlay; use a fallback or retain the previous image if the result is unusable.
The image looks inconsistent across cards
Check that capture jobs use the same viewport, output treatment, and card crop policy. If you use full-page captures, long pages may shrink substantially when fitted into a fixed-height card.

A submitted URL produces an unexpected destination
Validate and normalize URLs before capture, and apply server-side protections for user-supplied destinations. The sources cited here do not specify a particular URL-security policy; make this part of your application’s own threat model.
Account for operational and policy risks
Treat screenshots as content fetched from the public web, not as trusted assets merely because they are images. Consider privacy, security, and copyright in your product policy. The cited technical sources do not settle legal obligations in India, local data-residency requirements, or regional service availability, so get advice appropriate to your operation rather than treating this implementation guide as legal guidance. No cited source establishes a performance, conversion, or engagement gain from adding previews.
