How to Make Website Colors Accessible: A Practical WCAG 2.2 Guide

Check text and non-text contrast separately, use more than color to convey meaning, and test the combinations people actually see on your website.

To make website colors accessible, check text and non-text contrast separately, avoid using color as the only way to communicate meaning, and test the actual page states people will see. Under WCAG 2.2 AA, ordinary text needs a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1, large text needs 3:1, and certain interface components and meaningful graphics need 3:1 against adjacent colors. Passing those checks addresses color-related requirements; it does not establish that a whole site conforms to WCAG.

1. Inventory where color carries information

Start with the rendered pages, not just the palette or design tokens. List every place where text or a visual element depends on color to remain readable or understandable. Include:

  • Body copy, headings, labels, placeholder text, and text inside buttons.
  • Text over photographs, gradients, patterned backgrounds, and colored panels.
  • Inline links, visited links, hover and focus states, and other interactive states.
  • Form errors, required-field markers, validation states, and button boundaries.
  • Icons, status indicators, chart series, diagrams, and other graphics that communicate meaning.

Check each theme and state separately. A text/background pair that works in a light theme may fail in dark mode, on hover, or when a focus indicator appears.

2. Apply the right WCAG contrast threshold

WCAG contrast is based on relative luminance, not on how different two hues look. A red and green can be easy to distinguish by hue yet have poor luminance contrast. The applicable threshold depends on what the color is doing.

Use WCAG 2.2 AA minimum How to apply it
Ordinary text and images of text 4.5:1 Check the text against its actual background.
Large-scale text and images of large-scale text 3:1 Large text is at least 18 point regular or 14 point bold—about 24 CSS pixels or 18.5 CSS pixels respectively.
Specified UI component and state information, and meaningful parts of graphics 3:1 Compare the visual information needed to identify the component, state, or graphic with its adjacent color.

These are separate tests, not one universal “accessible color” score. Text thresholds come from WCAG Success Criterion 1.4.3; the non-text threshold comes from Success Criterion 1.4.11. The large-text rule concerns rendered text size and weight, so do not infer it from a design file’s point setting alone.

WCAG thresholds are exact boundaries: 4.499:1 does not meet 4.5:1, and 2.999:1 does not meet 3:1. Do not round a result up. For the stricter optional AAA target, ordinary text needs 7:1 and large text 4.5:1.

WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3 has exceptions, including inactive UI text, pure decoration, text not visible to anyone, some text inside pictures containing significant other visual content, and logotypes. Treat these as specific exceptions in the criterion, not as a general exemption for nearby text or interface elements.

  • WHITE BALANCE REFERENCE: Capture the target under the same light as your subject to set neutral balance and exposure with confidence, reducing trial and error corrections and improving consistency across a full shoot or production day.
  • PROFILE CREATION READY: Supports creation of custom DNG and ICC camera profiles when used with Calibrite PROFILER software, helping streamline editing workflows and maintain predictable color rendering for specific camera, lens, and lighting combinations.
  • WORKFLOW EFFICIENCY: Provides a reliable point of reference for global corrections and color grading decisions, saving time in post production while improving consistency for multi camera shoots, commercial work, and color critical deliverables.

3. Make meaning clear without color alone

Color must not be the only visual signal for information, an action, a requested response, or a distinction. WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.1 states: “Color is not used as the only visual means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing a visual element.”

  • Links: Underline inline links, or give them another visible cue beyond a change in text color.
  • Errors: Pair red text or a red border with a clear written error message and, where useful, an icon. Identify which field needs attention.
  • Charts: Use direct labels, patterns, symbols, or a nearby text explanation in addition to color-coded series.
  • Status: Pair status colors with words or icons so that “warning” or “complete” is not conveyed by hue alone.
  • Actions and required fields: Use visible labels, symbols, or instructions in addition to color changes.

Redundant cues help people who cannot distinguish a color difference and also make the page clearer in conditions such as low-quality displays or monochrome printing.

4. Measure actual foreground and background combinations

Use a current digital contrast analyzer to measure each foreground/background pair against the applicable threshold. Record the use (ordinary or large text, UI information, or graphic), the ratio, and the rendered state tested. A color value is not meaningful by itself: the same foreground can pass on one background and fail on another.

  1. Choose the actual foreground and adjacent background colors used in the page.
  2. Identify whether the item is text, qualifying large text, a UI component/state, or a meaningful graphic.
  3. Compare the numeric result with the correct AA threshold without rounding.
  4. Repeat for relevant hover, focus, selected, disabled, validation, and theme states.
  5. Check the rendered page again after changing the palette or component styles.

For text placed over a photograph or gradient, sample or assess the rendered background behind the text. A single design-token pair is not enough if the background varies across the text. A subtle overlay or a solid text panel can make the background more consistent; retest the resulting presentation.

Thin or unusual fonts can look fainter in practice even when the numeric ratio meets the minimum. W3C advises considering a stronger or thicker font, or using contrast above the minimum, in that situation.

5. Review the page in grayscale, then test more than color

A grayscale view is a useful qualitative check: it can reveal places where a difference disappears when hue is removed. It does not calculate a ratio and cannot replace numeric contrast testing.

  • EXPOSURE AND CONTRAST CONTROL: Large gray steps support waveform, zebras, and false color tools, allowing accurate mid tone placement and consistent exposure matching across cameras and scenes.
  • NEUTRAL WHITE BALANCE SIDE: Reverse white balance target provides a spectrally neutral reference for creating in camera white balance, helping footage start at a consistent neutral point across mixed lighting conditions.

W3C/WAI describes three useful approaches, each with limits:

  • Analyzer table: Can inspect many color pairs on a page, but may report pairs that are not visible together in the rendered page.
  • Eyedropper: Can measure a specific foreground/background pair, but it is one item at a time and may depend on mouse use and visual access.
  • Grayscale review: Helps show whether a color-only distinction disappears, but is imprecise and provides no contrast ratio.

These checks cover color-related issues only. They do not test keyboard operation, screen-reader behavior, content structure, or every WCAG criterion. A color tool’s passing result is not proof that a website is accessible or fully WCAG-conformant.

Say which WCAG version and conformance level you assessed, and distinguish that assessment from legal compliance. WCAG is a W3C Recommendation; which legal or policy requirements apply depends on the jurisdiction and governing framework.

For example, Section508.gov says the Section 508 Standards require WCAG 2.0 AA and notes that WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.11 has not been incorporated as a Section 508 Standards requirement, although many federal agencies follow it as best practice. Do not describe every WCAG 2.2 criterion as automatically required by Section 508 or by law in every jurisdiction.

If you need a clean screenshot of the rendered page while reviewing color combinations and states, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It is a capture aid, not a contrast analyzer or a substitute for accessibility testing; inspect the relevant foreground/background pair and run the appropriate checks.

For example, save a page capture as WebP with cURL:
