1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo make the on-screen keyboard appear on an iPad, tap inside a text field in an app that accepts typing. Apple’s iPad User Guide puts it in one sentence: “Tap in a text field to open the onscreen keyboard.”
If an Apple external keyboard is connected, the keyboard may not appear on its own. You can summon it from the Shortcuts bar instead. If the keyboard is already on screen but is floating, split, or moved out of place, the fixes are different, and they are covered below.

The basic fix: tap a text field
Most of the time, the keyboard appears the moment the insertion point is active in an editable field. Open the app or screen where you want to type, tap the text-entry area (a message box, search bar, note body, or address field), and wait a moment for the keyboard to slide up.

When an Apple external keyboard is connected
With a hardware keyboard attached, iPadOS may keep the on-screen keyboard hidden because the physical keys are already available. The Shortcuts bar lets you bring it back on demand.
- Locate the Shortcuts bar. It appears at the top of the screen when a text field is active.
- Tap the Keyboard Shortcut button. If you have installed additional language keyboards, tap the language button beside predictive text instead.
- Choose Show Keyboard. The on-screen keyboard appears and you can type with it alongside the physical keys.
- Dismiss it when finished. Use the same control and choose Hide Keyboard.
The exact button labels and the look of the Shortcuts bar can differ by iPad model, keyboard configuration, and iPadOS version. If the control you see is named differently, follow the visible equivalent on your device.

Identify which situation you are in
The right fix depends on what is on screen right now. Use this table to match your symptom to the correct control.
| What you see | What is happening | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing appears after tapping a text field | The keyboard has not been summoned, or a physical keyboard is handling input | Tap a real editable field first. With an Apple external keyboard, use Show Keyboard from the Shortcuts bar. |
| A keyboard is visible but small and movable | Floating keyboard mode | Spread two fingers apart on the keyboard, or tap More > Full. |
| The keyboard is split into two halves | Split keyboard mode, available only on supported models | Hold the keyboard button at the lower right, then choose Merge or Dock and Merge. |
| The keyboard is present but not at the bottom of the screen | The keyboard was undocked | Hold the Hide Keyboard key, then choose Dock. |
Fixing a floating keyboard
A floating keyboard is a smaller, free-moving version that can sit over app content. It is often the reason people think the keyboard has disappeared, because it shows up in an unexpected corner or at a reduced size.

- Or use the menu. Tap More > Full to return the keyboard to full size.
Fixing a split keyboard
Split mode divides the keyboard into two sections, one on each side of the screen. It is a layout choice, not a sign that the keyboard is broken, but it can be hard to recognize if you did not turn it on yourself.
- Hold the keyboard button at the lower right. This is the icon that controls the keyboard’s layout options.
- Choose Merge or Dock and Merge. The two halves join back into one keyboard.
Apple’s support documentation on Split Keyboard says the feature is available only on iPad mini and on iPad (9th generation and earlier). On newer models, the split layout is not offered, so you should not expect to see it there.

Bringing back an undocked keyboard
If the keyboard has been moved away from its usual position, you can restore it. Apple’s iPad User Guide describes holding the Hide Keyboard key and choosing Dock, which returns the keyboard to its original docked spot. The available positions and behavior depend on your iPad model.
Full Keyboard Access is a different feature
Full Keyboard Access is an accessibility setting for controlling iPad with a physical keyboard. It is sometimes confused with showing the on-screen keyboard, but it does not bring the on-screen keyboard up. If your goal is simply to type on the glass, you do not need that setting, and turning it on will not, by itself, make the keyboard appear.
