The reminder Outlook shows when you try to send a message that mentions an attachment but has no file attached is a send-time warning, and it is separate from calendar reminders. In new Outlook, it is controlled by a Mail setting labeled “Warn me when I send a message that may be missing an attachment,” where the setting is available. Microsoft’s support pages do not document where that setting sits or give a click-by-click route to turn it off, and classic Outlook’s documented reminder controls cover meetings and appointments, not this warning. This guide explains what to look for in each version and what to leave alone.

What triggers the warning

Microsoft describes the reminder as appearing when you write that a message contains an attachment and then try to send it without attaching a file. Typing words such as “attachment” or “attached” is enough to trigger it. At that point you can stop and add the file, or send the message without one.

In new Outlook, Microsoft says the warning only works when the email text is formatted in English (US). This applies regardless of the language of the Outlook interface, so a user with Outlook in another language can still see the warning if the message text uses that English (US) formatting. Microsoft’s overview of Outlook features covers the basic trigger, and Microsoft’s guide to adding files to emails documents the new Outlook behavior and the English (US) limit.

Turning it off in new Outlook

Microsoft’s documentation does not give a complete path for this setting. The label below comes from a Microsoft Q&A question, so use it as a search target rather than a guaranteed menu location:

  1. Select Settings (the gear icon) in new Outlook.
  2. Open Mail.
  3. Look for “Warn me when I send a message that may be missing an attachment.” If it is present, clear the checkbox to turn the warning off.

If you cannot find the label in your build, the setting is not exposed to you in that version, and no supported alternative route is documented. A Microsoft Q&A question asks why the prompt still did not appear even with the option checked, which suggests the setting and the prompt do not always behave as the label implies. Check the warning after you change the setting by writing “see the attached file” in a test draft and attempting to send it.

Turning it off in classic Outlook for Windows

Microsoft’s advanced options page for classic Outlook documents reminder controls for meetings and appointments. It does not describe the forgotten-attachment warning, and the sources reviewed for this guide do not confirm a current click path for turning that warning off in classic Outlook.

The most reasonable place to look is the Mail options in your installed version (File, then Options, then Mail), searching for the missing-attachment label. If the option is not there, do not assume it lives in the reminder settings. Changing the meeting and appointment reminder settings will not affect the send-time warning.

Microsoft’s notifications and reminders guide documents controls for calendar events and tasks. It does not establish that those controls affect the attachment warning, so do not treat them as a fix for this prompt.

Which control affects which reminder

Control What it governs Where Microsoft documents it Changes the missing-attachment warning?
Missing-attachment warning Prompt when a message mentions an attachment but has no file at send time New Outlook Mail settings, using the label named in a Microsoft Q&A question; exact path not documented Yes. This is the setting to change.
Show reminders (classic Outlook) Meeting and appointment reminders Advanced options in classic Outlook for Windows No. The documented scope is meetings and appointments only.
Calendar and task notifications Reminders for calendar events and tasks Notification settings described in Microsoft’s notifications guide Not established by Microsoft’s documentation.
Attachment preview How received files are previewed when you open them Trust Center, described in Microsoft’s guide to opening and saving received attachments No. It is a separate function for received-file previewers.

The attachment preview controls are documented in Microsoft’s guide to opening, saving, and editing received attachments. Turning previews off changes what you see when you open files you receive, not what Outlook checks before you send one.
