To make sugar in Minecraft, place one sugar cane in the crafting grid. The output is one sugar. No crafting table is needed for this recipe if you use the 2×2 inventory grid, and the same single-ingredient recipe works in a crafting table’s 3×3 grid.
The recipe, step by step
- Open your crafting interface. Press E to open the inventory (or use the crafting table if you have one placed).
- Move one sugar cane into any crafting slot. The recipe needs only that single item.
- Take the sugar from the output slot. Shift-clicking moves the result into your inventory.
If you cannot find the recipe, open the recipe book in the crafting interface and search for sugar. Minecraft’s official “How to craft” guide, published by Minecraft Staff on June 5, 2023, describes the recipe book as the place to inspect recipes and the supplies they need, and it can place those supplies into the grid when you select a recipe.

Where to get sugar cane
Sugar cane grows naturally next to water, on grass, dirt, sand, or red sand. It needs a block of water adjacent to the cane’s base, or an equivalent block allowed by your edition. Harvest it by breaking the bottom stalk; the cane above it drops as items.

Other sources of sugar
| Source | Status in the sources reviewed |
|---|---|
| Sugar cane crafted into sugar | Confirmed by the Minecraft Wiki “Sugar” page (community reference, updated September 25, 2026) and consistent with the official guide’s recipe book instructions. |
| Witch drops | Listed in the Minecraft Wiki “Sugar” page. Drops depend on killing witches, so this route is slower and luck-based. |
| Honey bottle | Listed as an alternative by the Minecraft Wiki “Sugar” page only. Neither the official guide nor the recipe book check was used to confirm it, so verify in your own recipe book before relying on it. |
Bone meal and edition differences
A community reference for sugar cane states that bone meal can grow sugar cane in Bedrock Edition but cannot be used on it in Java Edition. Treat this as a version-sensitive detail and confirm it in the edition and version you play before planning a farm around it.
What sugar is used for
Sugar appears in several food and brewing recipes. Minecraft.net’s “Taking Inventory: Sugar” article, in its Chinese-locale version, lists cake, pumpkin pie, fermented spider eyes, and horse effects among its uses. The Minecraft Wiki also lists a Potion of Swiftness. Check the recipe book for the exact ingredient counts in your version.

Troubleshooting
- The recipe does not appear: confirm you are holding sugar cane, not another plant item, and that the recipe book is set to show craftable items.
- Sugar cane will not grow: check that the base sits next to water, or on a valid block for your edition, and that the cane is not blocked above.
- Recipe differs from this guide: your game version may have changed the item. The recipe book in your game is the authoritative check.
Sugar cane is the reliable route: one cane in the grid yields one sugar, and the game’s own recipe book confirms it.
