In vanilla Minecraft, you can make flint and steel by combining flint and iron in your inventory crafting grid. That makes an ignition tool—not a steel ingot. The sources here do not establish a universal vanilla recipe for steel ingots; those come from specific mods or add-ons, and the steps depend on the one installed in your world.
Can you make steel in vanilla Minecraft?
Not as a steel ingot using a supported universal vanilla recipe. The similar-sounding vanilla item is flint and steel, a tool that starts fires and activates certain blocks.

- Open your inventory’s crafting grid; a crafting table is not required.
- Combine one flint with one iron ingot to craft flint and steel. See Minecraft’s flint-and-steel guide for the vanilla recipe.
Use the tool to ignite campfires, candles, cakes with candles, Nether portals, and TNT. Its durability decreases as you use it. The iron in the recipe is not a steel ingot: Minecraft’s guide notes that iron can start fires, though less effectively than steel.
How to make a steel ingot with a mod
There is no single modded recipe. First identify the exact mod, Minecraft version, and—where relevant—mod loader in your world. Then check that mod’s recipe guide or in-game recipe viewer. Two Forge listings illustrate how different the processes can be:

Older mods used still other progressions. For example, a forum post about Steel Mod 1.4.5 describes workable iron and powdered coal; it is a legacy example, not current vanilla guidance: Steel Mod 1.4.5 forum post.
Can a Bedrock add-on add steel?
Yes. Bedrock creators can define shaped, shapeless, and furnace recipes with resource and behavior packs, so an add-on can add a steel ingot and its recipe. That does not mean steel is available in every Bedrock world, or that different add-ons use the same ingredients or processing method. Microsoft’s documentation explains how to create recipes and how furnace recipes define input and output items.

What to check if you cannot find the recipe
- Confirm what you mean by steel. If you want to light something, craft vanilla flint and steel. If you need a steel ingot, identify the mod or add-on that adds it.
- Check the exact installation. Look up the mod or add-on name, Minecraft edition and version, and mod loader if applicable. A recipe from a different version or pack may not work.
- Follow the specified progression. A mod may require an intermediary item such as crude iron or pig iron and a particular machine or furnace; do not assume an ordinary furnace or a vanilla crafting recipe will work.
- Verify the add-on is active. In Bedrock, the world needs the relevant add-on packs enabled. Recipe definitions are pack-specific, so consult the creator’s instructions for that add-on.
If you are helping another player, ask which edition, mod or add-on, and version they use before giving steel-ingot steps. Without those details, there is no reliable one-size-fits-all recipe.
