The recipe gives you four stairs. For eligible materials, a stonecutter makes one stair from one block, which is useful when you need an exact count.

Minecraft’s crafting guide says the recipe book is available from your inventory or a crafting table. When you select a recipe, it shows the required ingredients in the grid and can place them there when you have the materials. Minecraft’s official crafting guide explains the recipe-book controls.

Use a stonecutter when the material is eligible
Put one eligible block into a stonecutter and select its stair variant to get one stair. Compared with the crafting-table recipe’s four stairs from six blocks, stonecutting is more material-efficient when you want a particular number of stairs. It does not support every stair material; the Minecraft Wiki notes, for example, that wooden stairs and bamboo mosaic stairs are not made this way. Check the in-game recipe book for the material and edition you are playing.
Mojang’s 2019 Java snapshot announcement described the stonecutter as a simpler way to make several stone-related blocks, including stairs. That announcement records the feature’s introduction, not a guarantee that every stair type can currently be stonecut. Read the original snapshot note.

Crafting table |
Six matching blocks make four stairs. |
Use for materials that are not stonecutter-eligible or when making a batch. |

Stonecutter |
One eligible block makes one stair. |
Use when you need an exact count and the material is accepted by the stonecutter. |
Place and orient the stairs
Hold the stair item and use it on the block face or space where you want it. The stair’s half-block side faces toward the player. Targeting the top of a block or the lower part of its side places an upright stair; targeting the bottom or the upper part of a side places it upside down. Adjacent stairs can form inner or outer corners based on how they are oriented.

Java Edition 26.3, published September 15, 2026, added stair and slab variants for every colored wool block and every colored concrete block. Its release notes also say concrete stairs and slabs can be crafted with a stonecutter. These are Java Edition changes; check the current Bedrock changelog or its in-game recipe book rather than assuming the same availability there. See the Java Edition 26.3 release notes.
