You can make a player an operator without typing /op by changing the server’s permission file or, on Realms, using the member-management screen. Java Edition servers use ops.json; Bedrock Dedicated Server uses permissions.json and the player’s XUID; Bedrock Realms exposes an Operator setting in Manage Members. Java Realms has a similar player setting, but its exact permission level is not consistently documented, so verify the current in-game interface.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The method depends on your edition and hosting arrangement. Stop a Java server before editing its file, use a UUID rather than a display name, and restart afterward. For Bedrock Dedicated Server, use the XUID rather than the gamertag and restart if you want a strictly command-free change.

OP is short for operator. An operator account has elevated server permissions, not merely permission to build. The operator role can include operator commands, world-setting controls, teleportation and every permission available to ordinary members. Because the role is broad, only grant it to people you trust and give the lowest role that solves the problem.
On a Java server, the entry in ops.json includes a numeric level. Level 2 is the commonly used setting for practical commands such as changing gamemode or giving items; level 1 is limited to bypassing spawn protection. The exact effective abilities can vary with the server version and configuration, so treat level 2 as a deliberate administrative grant rather than a harmless convenience.

Bedrock uses the word operator as a permission value instead of Java’s numeric level in its dedicated-server permission file. Realms uses a menu role. These systems are separate: a Java UUID cannot be substituted for a Bedrock XUID, and a Realms membership screen does not edit a self-hosted server’s files.
Choose the method for your setup
| Edition or setup | Where you change the role | What you need | How the change takes effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java Edition server | ops.json in the server directory or your host’s file manager |
File access and the player’s UUID | Stop, save, then restart the server |
| Bedrock Dedicated Server | permissions.json |
File access and the player’s XUID; online mode must be enabled for account verification | Restart for a no-command workflow; a live permission reload is available on installations that support it |
| Bedrock Realms | Realms Manage Members screen | Realm-owner or administrator access | Usually applies from the membership screen; labels can vary by version |
| Java Realms | Realm configuration, then the player list | Realm-owner access | Use the current Realms interface; published guidance is not consistent about levels |
Java Edition: add an operator through ops.json
This is the dependable no-command method for a self-hosted Java server or a managed host that gives you file-manager access. Do not edit the file while the server is running: a running process can rewrite the file during shutdown and erase your manual change.

Use your host panel’s Stop control or stop the server from the normal administration interface. Wait until the process is fully offline and the console no longer reports that it is saving or shutting down. Editing while the process is active is the most common reason an apparently correct change disappears.
2. Open the correct server folder
In a self-hosted installation, open the folder containing the server’s world and configuration files. In a hosting panel, open its file manager and select the server’s root directory. The file is named ops.json and is normally created after the server has been run at least once.
3. Obtain the player’s UUID
Java identifies players by UUID, not just by the name shown in chat. Copy the player’s UUID from a trusted account lookup or from information recorded by your server, and check every character. A name change does not change the UUID, which is why the UUID is the reliable key.
4. Add or update one entry
Open ops.json in a plain-text editor. The file is a JSON array of player objects. Each object needs the player’s UUID, the name currently associated with that account, and a numeric level. A typical entry has this shape:

{"uuid":"<player-uuid>","name":"<exact-player-name>","level":2}
Use the actual values for the account. If the player already has an object in the array, edit that object instead of creating a duplicate. Keep the surrounding square brackets, commas and quotation marks valid JSON. Do not add explanatory comments; JSON does not accept them.
5. Choose the level intentionally
- Level 1: the limited setting generally used to bypass spawn protection.
- Level 2: the common choice when the player needs practical administrative commands such as gamemode or item-giving commands.
The available levels and their behavior are tied to the server implementation. If you only need a player to build near spawn, an operator role may be excessive; adjust the server’s protection or membership settings instead of granting broad authority.
6. Save and restart
Save the file without changing its name or extension. Start the server normally and allow it to finish loading before the player reconnects. The server reads the operator list during startup, so a restart is the command-free way to apply the edit.
When a hosting panel hides the file
Some managed hosts expose a file manager, while others restrict direct configuration edits. Look for a Files, Configuration or Advanced settings area. If the panel does not expose ops.json, ask the host whether it permits operator-list edits or can apply the change for you. Without file access, you cannot reliably modify a Java server’s operator list yourself without using an in-game or console command.

Bedrock Dedicated Server: edit permissions.json
Bedrock Dedicated Server does not use Java’s ops.json format. Its permission file is permissions.json, and the account key is the player’s XUID. A gamertag, even when spelled correctly, is not a substitute.
1. Confirm online mode and identify the XUID
Online mode must be enabled so the server can verify the player’s online account and resolve its XUID. Obtain the XUID from the account information available to your server or a reputable lookup process. Double-check that it belongs to the intended player; assigning operator status to the wrong XUID gives the wrong account full authority.

2. Stop the server before editing
Use the server host’s Stop control or shut down the dedicated-server process through its normal administration method. Waiting for a complete stop prevents the server from replacing your manual edit.
3. Edit the existing permission entry
Open permissions.json and preserve the file’s existing structure. Add the player’s XUID or update the matching entry so its permission value is operator. Do not replace the XUID with a gamertag, and do not remove other players’ entries accidentally. If the file contains several entries, change only the intended account.
4. Save, then restart for a command-free result
Save the file and start the server again. The restart causes Bedrock Dedicated Server to read the new permission list without requiring a console instruction. Some server versions also support reloading permissions while running; that route uses a console permission-reload command, so it is optional and does not meet a strict “no commands at all” requirement.
Gamertags containing spaces
If you later manage permissions from a console, a gamertag containing spaces must be handled as one quoted name. That console detail is irrelevant to the file-edit method, which uses the XUID and therefore avoids name-parsing problems.
Bedrock Realms: use Manage Members
Bedrock Realms provides the simplest non-command route because the membership role is exposed in the Realm interface rather than a server file.
- Open Minecraft Bedrock and enter the Realms area.
- Select the Realm’s management option.
- Open Manage Members.
- Find the player’s account in the member list.
- Change that member’s role to Operator, then close or save the panel if the interface presents a confirmation.
Menu wording and placement can change between Bedrock releases. If you do not see an Operator choice, confirm that you are signed in as the Realm owner, that the player has joined the Realm at least once, and that you are editing the correct Realm. The role path is described by current community documentation and guides, but it is not consistently confirmed on an official reference page, so rely on the labels actually shown in your client.

Java Realms: verify the current player controls
Community guides describe a Java Realms path similar to Configure, Players, select the player, then use an operator control. This is a Realms UI action rather than a typed command. However, published descriptions conflict about the numeric level assigned to Realm owners and operators, and the exact labels can change.
Use the current Configure/Players screen in your Java client and read the role confirmation before applying it. If the control is missing, you may not be the Realm owner or the account may not yet be listed as a member. Do not assume that a level reported by an older guide matches the behavior of your current Realms version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check that the change worked without issuing a command
Have the player disconnect and reconnect after the restart or Realms change. A reconnect forces the account to receive its updated permission state. On a server where you can inspect the administrative player list, confirm that the account appears there with the intended role. Avoid testing by granting additional powers or changing world settings; those tests create unnecessary risk.

If the player still behaves as a member, first verify the identity key: Java requires the UUID, while Bedrock requires the XUID. Then confirm that the file was edited in the active server directory, not a backup or a different instance, and that the server was fully restarted after saving.
Troubleshooting failed operator assignments
The edit vanished after shutdown
The server was probably still running when the file was changed. Stop it completely, make the edit again, validate the JSON structure, and start it once. Keep a backup of the original file before changing it.
The server will not start after editing
A missing comma, extra comma, unmatched brace or altered quotation mark can make JSON invalid. Restore the backup, then reapply one small change at a time with a JSON-aware editor. Do not paste comments into the file.
Best Value
The player’s name is correct but the role is missing
Names are not the authoritative identity in either workflow. Recheck the Java UUID or Bedrock XUID against the intended account. On Java, also check for a duplicate object with an old name or a different UUID and remove only the incorrect duplicate.
Bedrock recognizes the file but not the permission
Confirm that the entry’s permission value is exactly operator, that the XUID is correct, and that online mode is enabled. Restart the dedicated server after saving. A live reload may be available, but a restart is the straightforward no-command fallback.
The Realms role control is unavailable
Only an owner or an account with the relevant Realm-management authority can change roles. Check that you are in the correct edition, have selected the right Realm, and are using a current client. Realms screens differ between Java and Bedrock, so instructions for one edition should not be applied to the other.
Security practices before giving operator status
- Grant only to trusted players. Operator access includes world-impacting abilities, not just quality-of-life actions.
- Back up the permission file. Keep the pre-change copy somewhere outside the live server directory.
- Use the narrowest role. If the player only needs to build, teleport, or bypass a single protection, look for a narrower server setting instead of operator access.
- Set a safe default for newcomers. On Bedrock Dedicated Server,
default-player-permission-levelinserver.propertiescan be set tovisitor, memberoroperator. Visitor is the cautious default for new players; do not leave new accounts at operator unless that is an intentional policy. - Review the list periodically. Remove former staff and unused accounts from the permission file or Realms member list.
Removing OP later
Use the same management surface that granted the role. On Java, stop the server, remove the player’s object from ops.json or reduce its level, save and restart. On Bedrock Dedicated Server, stop the server and remove the player’s XUID entry or change its permission value, then restart. In Realms, return to Manage Members or the Java Realms player controls and change the account back to its ordinary member role.
If the player remains online while you change the role, have them reconnect afterward. A reconnect ensures the client receives the updated permissions and avoids confusion caused by a session that began before the change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Which no-command method should you use?
| Your situation | Best route | Main risk to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted Java or a panel with file access | Edit ops.json, then restart |
Using a name instead of the UUID or editing while running |
| Bedrock Dedicated Server with file access | Edit permissions.json by XUID, then restart |
Using a gamertag or leaving online verification disabled |
| Bedrock Realm | Manage Members, set Operator | Confusing Bedrock menus with Java Realms controls |
| Java Realm | Use the current Configure/Players control | Relying on an outdated level description |
| No file access and no Realm-management access | Ask the server owner or host administrator | Attempting to alter a server you do not control |
The essential distinction is identity: Java reads a UUID from ops.json, Bedrock Dedicated Server reads an XUID from permissions.json, and Realms uses the account selected in its member interface. Once the correct identity and management surface are used, a server restart or Realms role change completes the assignment without typing the /op command.
