A standard, cautious setup refreshes package lists and downloads available packages, while a separate action file controls any installation or upgrade. Configure the global settings in /etc/cron-apt/config, inspect the ordered rules in /etc/cron-apt/action.d/, verify the cron daemon, and test the job manually before depending on it.

That separation matters: Debian warns that automatic upgrades of all packages are not recommended unless you control every configured package repository. Start with download-only behavior, then add narrowly scoped installation actions only after you have tested repository trust, pinning, dependency changes, reboot handling, and rollback.

What cron-apt does
cron-apt is a Debian package that runs apt-get operations from scheduled cron jobs. It is an automation wrapper around the package manager, not a separate update engine. Debian stable lists cron-apt version 0.13.0.1, although the version installed on your system depends on the distribution release and repository you use.
The package recommends a cron daemon or a compatible implementation. At each scheduled run, cron-apt reads its global variables and then processes action files. Each action file contains apt-get arguments, one per line, and files are processed in file-name order. That ordering lets you build a sequence such as refreshing metadata first and downloading packages second.

The default policy is deliberately conservative: cron-apt updates package lists and downloads new packages without installing them. Installation or upgrading occurs only when you explicitly add apt-get actions that perform it. This makes the default useful for staging updates while leaving the change to the installed system under administrator control.
Decide how much automation you actually want
Before editing a file, decide whether the scheduled job should merely prepare updates or change the running system. The three common levels are:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Automation level | What cron-apt does | Operational consequence |
|---|---|---|
| List refresh | Retrieves current package indexes. | The machine learns which versions are available; installed packages are unchanged. |
| Download-only | Refreshes indexes and downloads packages without installing them. | Packages are staged locally for a later, deliberate maintenance action. |
| Install or upgrade | Runs explicit apt-get installation or upgrade arguments from an action file. | Package files, dependencies, services, and possibly reboot requirements can change during the scheduled run. |
For most servers, begin with the first or second level. Move to installation only when you can account for every configured repository and have a tested response to failed dependencies, service restarts, kernel updates, and reboots. Debian’s package guidance is direct: automatic upgrade of all packages is not recommended unless you are in full control of the package repository.
Prerequisites and repository checks
Use a supported package source
Install cron-apt from the package repositories configured for the target Debian or Ubuntu system. The package manager will select the release-appropriate build. Do not assume that the version on one distribution release matches another; check the installed package metadata after installation.
Know who controls every repository
cron-apt passes work to apt-get, so apt’s normal repository trust, signing, pinning, dependency resolution, and proxy settings still apply. Review every entry enabled on the host, including third-party sources, before allowing unattended installation. If you cannot explain why a repository is enabled and who maintains it, keep cron-apt in download-only mode until that is resolved.
Check for another updater
Distribution releases may already have apt-related timers or other scheduled jobs. Treat those as local configuration to verify, not something to assume. Two schedulers can refresh indexes or attempt package operations at the same time, creating lock conflicts and making logs difficult to interpret. Inventory the host’s cron and systemd scheduling before choosing a run time.

Install cron-apt and confirm the scheduler
- Refresh the package index using the normal package-manager procedure for the distribution.
- Install the package with the distribution’s package manager. On a Debian-family host this is commonly performed with
sudo apt-get install cron-apt; confirm the package name and repository for your release before accepting the transaction. - Check the installed package version and read its local documentation. Debian stable’s metadata lists version 0.13.0.1, but your installed release may differ.
- Verify that cron or a compatible cron daemon is enabled and running. Use the service-management tools supplied by your distribution, and check the scheduler’s own logs for a successful invocation.
- Read the installed example at
/usr/share/doc/cron-apt/examples/config. Copy only settings you need into/etc/cron-apt/config; do not replace the whole file blindly, because defaults and comments can vary by package version.
Installation does not by itself mean that every package will be upgraded. The behavior comes from the action files and global variables present on the host, so inspect those files immediately after installation.
Understand the two configuration locations
/etc/cron-apt/config: global variables
The official man page identifies /etc/cron-apt/config as the location for global variables. This is where settings that affect the overall run belong, such as logging or mail behavior supported by the installed package. Start from the example under /usr/share/doc/cron-apt/examples/config and copy only the variables you understand and intend to change.
Keep local policy in this file rather than scattering it through action rules. Record why each non-default value exists, especially when it changes notification, logging, proxy, or error handling. A short comment beside a deliberate setting can save time during an incident, but avoid copying obsolete options from a guide written for a different cron-apt version.
/etc/cron-apt/action.d/: ordered apt-get arguments
The action directory contains the rules cron-apt executes. The man page describes each action file as a list of apt-get arguments, one argument per line, with files processed in file order. Consequently, both the file names and the contents matter.

Preserve the distribution’s examples until you understand them, and make changes in a separate, clearly ordered file when possible. A file that refreshes indexes must run before a file that downloads or installs packages; otherwise the later operation may use stale metadata or fail for a reason that is hard to diagnose.
ls -la /etc/cron-apt/action.d/
sudoedit /etc/cron-apt/config
The first command shows the files and their lexical order. Open each existing action file with a privileged editor and read every line. Do not add an install or upgrade argument merely because a file name sounds like it should install updates; the arguments, not the name, determine the operation.

Build a safe baseline
Keep refresh and download separate
A robust starting design has one ordered action for refreshing package lists and another for downloading packages without installing them. Separating them follows cron-apt’s execution model and makes it clear where a failure occurred. It also gives you a useful staging point: packages can be reviewed, bandwidth-heavy downloads can happen during a maintenance window, and installation can be performed later under supervision.
Use the action files already supplied by your package as the syntax reference. If you create a new rule, add only apt-get arguments documented by the installed cron-apt man page and the apt-get documentation for your release. Keep the refresh rule earlier in file order than the download rule. After editing, review the complete directory in order before scheduling the job.
Do not mix installation into the baseline accidentally
Because action files are executed sequentially, a single added line can change a host from download-only to unattended installation. Treat every installation or upgrade argument as a change-control event. Review it as carefully as you would a systemd unit or a firewall rule, and keep a record of the package version, repository set, and intended maintenance window.
Add installation only with an explicit policy
cron-apt can be instructed to run anything available through apt-get or aptitude. That flexibility is also the main risk: a broad upgrade action can change many packages, pull new dependencies, restart services, or install a kernel. If you choose installation, define the scope before writing the action file.
Questions to answer first
- Are all configured repositories controlled and trusted by your organization?
- Are package priorities and pins understood, including interactions between distribution and third-party sources?
- What happens when a package requires a configuration-file decision or when dependencies cannot be resolved?
- Which services may restart, and how will you detect an outage?
- How will you handle kernel or libc updates that require a reboot?
- Can you remove or downgrade a problematic package, and do you have a tested recovery path?
- Who receives the failure notification, and who is responsible for acting on it?
Only after those questions have concrete answers should you add the narrowest apt-get installation action that meets the requirement. Test it on a non-critical machine with the same repository configuration, then run a controlled manual invocation and inspect the resulting logs before enabling a recurring schedule.
Prefer a staged rollout
Start with one host, then a small representative group, and only then consider a wider rollout. Keep download-only behavior available as a fallback while validating the installation action. If a package operation behaves unexpectedly, remove or disable the installation rule and return to list refresh and download until the cause is understood.

Configure logging and error mail
Debian documents that cron-apt can mail errors and log to syslog or to a separate file. Enable the notification path appropriate to your environment in /etc/cron-apt/config, using the shipped example as the syntax authority for your installed version.
Make failures actionable
- Choose one log destination and ensure it is monitored. Syslog is convenient when your host already forwards system events; a separate file can make cron-apt runs easier to audit.
- Configure error mail only when the host can reliably deliver it to a monitored mailbox or alerting system. An undeliverable local message is not an operational control.
- Record the scheduled time, the action files in effect, and the package-manager exit status. A successful cron launch is not proof that apt-get completed successfully.
- Retain enough history to correlate package changes with service incidents and reboots.
When testing, deliberately inspect both the normal output and the error path. A quiet mailbox or an empty log can mean success, no packages were available, a rule was not selected, or notifications are misconfigured.

Verify the schedule locally
The exact cron entry and invocation depend on the installed package and distribution. Read the local cron-apt documentation and inspect the package’s installed scheduler files rather than copying a schedule from another release. Confirm that the cron daemon is enabled, that the job runs as the required user, and that its environment can reach the configured repositories.
Use a manual invocation before relying on cron
- Finish reviewing
/etc/cron-apt/configand every file under/etc/cron-apt/action.d/. - Use the command documented by the installed
cron-aptmanual page to invoke one run manually with the same privileges and configuration the scheduler will use. - Watch the package-manager output and record the exit status. Confirm whether the run refreshed indexes, downloaded packages, or installed anything.
- Inspect the configured log destination and error-mail path. Verify that the observed action order matches the file order you reviewed.
- Repeat the test after adding any installation action, first on a disposable or maintenance-window host.
Do not infer success solely from the absence of an interactive prompt. The scheduled environment may differ from your shell, and repository, DNS, proxy, lock, or permission failures can appear only in the cron log.

Troubleshoot common failure modes
The job never runs
Check that cron or a compatible daemon is installed, enabled, and running. Confirm that the cron-apt package installed its scheduler entry and that another local policy has not disabled it. Review the scheduler’s logs for parsing errors or a skipped job.
Indexes refresh but packages are not downloaded
Inspect the action files in lexical order and verify that the download action is present and contains valid apt-get arguments, one per line. A global setting alone does not create an action; cron-apt executes what the action directory specifies.
Best Value
Packages download but nothing installs
This is the expected default behavior. Add an explicit installation or upgrade action only when your policy allows it, and verify that the action is actually being processed. Confirm that you did not mistake a download-only rule for an installation rule.
An installation run fails with a lock or dependency error
Look for another apt operation or distribution timer running at the same time. Reschedule one job, then rerun the controlled test after the competing operation has finished. For dependency failures, inspect repository pins and package-manager output before changing action files; broadening the upgrade scope can make the problem worse.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMail or logs are missing
Recheck the variables copied into /etc/cron-apt/config against the installed example. Confirm that the mail transport and log service work independently, then run cron-apt manually and verify where its output is written. A notification setting cannot compensate for a scheduler that never starts.
cron-apt versus another automatic-update mechanism
Choose a mechanism by examining the control surface rather than assuming one is universally safer. cron-apt uses ordered files in /etc/cron-apt/action.d/ plus global variables in /etc/cron-apt/config, and it depends on cron or a compatible daemon. A distribution’s systemd or apt timer uses a different scheduler and configuration model. Compare the following questions on the actual host:
- Action scope: Does the mechanism only refresh and download, or can it install and upgrade?
- Ordering: Can you see and control the order in which refresh, download, and installation actions occur?
- Observability: Are failures delivered by mail, syslog, a separate log, or another monitored channel?
- Repository governance: Can you account for every repository and package priority involved?
- Collision risk: Could two schedulers invoke apt-get at the same time?
If cron-apt is already deployed and its ordered action files are understood, it can provide a transparent, staged workflow. If your distribution already standardizes another updater, avoid running both without a deliberate reason and an explicit schedule-coordination plan.
Operational checklist
- Install the distribution’s cron-apt package and record the installed version.
- Confirm a cron-compatible daemon is enabled and that no competing apt scheduler will collide with it.
- Read
/usr/share/doc/cron-apt/examples/configand copy only required variables into/etc/cron-apt/config. - Inspect every file in
/etc/cron-apt/action.d/and understand its apt-get arguments. - Keep list refresh and download actions separate and ordered.
- Leave installation disabled until repository trust, pinning, dependency handling, reboots, and rollback are tested.
- Configure and verify error mail, syslog, or a separate log file.
- Run the documented cron-apt command manually, record its exit status, and inspect logs.
- Test any installation action on a non-critical host before scheduling it broadly.
- Revisit the configuration whenever repositories, distribution releases, package versions, or maintenance ownership changes.
What a good cron-apt deployment looks like
A defensible deployment is easy to explain: the scheduler is known, the global variables are minimal, action files are ordered and reviewed, and the default run stages packages without changing installed software. Any installation rule is narrow, tested, observable, and backed by a recovery procedure. That design uses cron-apt for predictable apt-get automation without turning a routine timer into an uncontrolled system-wide upgrade.
