Distributed systems cannot generally promise that every operation will be observed exactly once from the caller through every service and side effect. A request may succeed while its response is lost, or a message may be delivered again after an acknowledgement goes missing. The practical goal is therefore not to prevent every repeat delivery, but to ensure that retrying the same logical operation does not cause its effect twice. Idempotency keys help make that contract explicit.
What “exactly once” does—and does not—mean
“Exactly-once delivery is a lie” is useful shorthand, not a universal theorem. Some platforms provide exactly-once features within documented boundaries and operating conditions. But a workflow that crosses a client, a broker, a database, and an external service cannot safely assume a single end-to-end observation or effect merely because one component offers such a feature.

The basic delivery choices expose different failure modes. AWS Well-Architected explains that at-most-once means a client makes one request, while at-least-once means it keeps requesting until it receives confirmation. The first can lose work when a request never arrives; the second can repeat work when the operation succeeded but its confirmation was lost. As AWS notes, asynchronous dependencies can still deliver duplicate messages: Identify the kind of distributed systems you depend on.

| Approach | What it prioritizes | Failure to account for |
|---|---|---|
| At-most-once | Do not retry after sending | Work may be lost if the request or message is not processed. |
| At-least-once | Retry until success is confirmed | The same work may be processed more than once. |
| Scoped exactly-once feature | Deduplicate or coordinate processing within a platform-defined boundary | Its guarantees do not automatically cover external effects or other services. |
These are not interchangeable guarantees. Producer-to-broker delivery, broker-to-consumer delivery, a local database commit, and a call to an external API are separate boundaries. Ordering, acknowledgements, retention, replay, and the scope of a platform’s guarantee can differ at each one.

How idempotency keys make retries safe
Idempotency describes the effect of an operation: repeating the same logical mutation should not create an additional side effect. An idempotency key gives the caller and service a shared identity for that intent. Malcolm Featonby of the Amazon Builders’ Library describes an idempotent operation as one that can be retransmitted or retried “with no additional side effects.” See Making retries safe with idempotent APIs.
- The caller creates a unique key for one intended operation and includes it with the mutating request.
- The service checks its durable idempotency records. If the key is new, it processes the operation and stores the key, its state, and the result.
- If the same key arrives again, the service does not perform the mutation again. For a completed operation, it returns the stored result or a semantically equivalent response.
- If the caller intends a separate operation—even one with identical parameters—it uses a new key.
The key represents caller intent, not a fingerprint of the payload. Two identical requests can legitimately mean “create this twice,” so hashing parameters alone cannot reliably distinguish a retry from a new action.

Design the key and its contract
Use a stable, unique token
Generate one key per logical operation and reuse it unchanged on every retry. A new intended operation gets a new key. AWS identifies UUIDs and KSUIDs as common token forms. Avoid using timestamps as keys: clock skew and collisions between clients can compromise uniqueness.
Define scope, lifetime, and duplicate behavior
Specify which caller and operation a key belongs to, how long the service remembers it, and what the service does when the same key arrives while the original is pending, completed, or failed. The retention window should cover the maximum retry and replay period. Expiring a record too soon can let an old retry repeat a side effect; keeping records forever has storage and operational costs.

Also define what happens if a caller reuses a key with different parameters. The service should not silently treat a changed request as the original without a documented rule. Keep the contract consistent across the API and the services that implement it.
Return a meaningful repeat response
After a completed operation, returning the earlier result—or a response with the same meaning—removes ambiguity when the original response was lost. For simultaneous copies, define whether later requests wait, receive a pending response, or follow another documented policy. The important point is that concurrent arrivals must not both apply the same mutation.

Keep the record and side effect in sync
The difficult part is coordinating the idempotency record with the actual effect. If an effect succeeds but its key record is lost, a retry can apply the effect again. If the record is committed but the effect fails, a retry may be suppressed even though the intended work never happened.

Where the key record and mutation live in the same transactional system, commit them together. When work crosses systems that cannot share a transaction, use explicit states and recovery behavior rather than pretending the boundary is atomic. A record might track pending, completed, or failed work; the implementation must define how retries and recovery move between those states.

- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Persist enough state to determine whether a key is new, in progress, or complete.
- Use transactions or appropriate concurrency control to serialize duplicate requests and coordinate the record with the local mutation.
- For work spanning services, make recovery and state transitions explicit; a local transaction cannot by itself make a remote side effect atomic.
- Store only the information needed to enforce the contract and reproduce the response; do not retain entire request payloads without a reason.
Carry operation identity across service boundaries
If one logical operation triggers downstream calls or asynchronous messages, propagate its identity where downstream deduplication is needed. Each service or message consumer remains responsible for making its own side effects safe. In an asynchronous consumer, track processed keys and tolerate redelivery; a producer-side key does not automatically protect a downstream action whose identity is discarded.
Apply this pattern to operations that change state or cause external effects. Read-only operations usually do not need idempotency handling unless they themselves trigger a side effect.
Test and monitor the failure cases
Testing only a successful first request misses the cases that make idempotency valuable. AWS’s guidance recommends testing successful and failed requests, concurrent duplicates, and retrying after a lost response. Monitor duplicate handling and unexpected differences in repeated responses so contract violations and recovery problems are visible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Send the same key again after a successful response and confirm the effect occurs only once.
- Simulate success followed by a lost response, then retry with the same key.
- Exercise an operation failure and verify that retry behavior matches the documented state transitions.
- Submit concurrent requests with the same key and confirm they cannot both apply the mutation.
- Check behavior for a reused key with different parameters and for a retry after the retention window.
- For asynchronous work, redeliver a message and verify that the consumer does not repeat its side effect.
A practical decision rule
Do not choose a delivery mode on the assumption that a transport alone will give the whole workflow exactly-once effects. Decide where loss or duplication can occur, identify each side effect, and assign a stable operation identity to retries. Then make the receiving component persist and enforce that identity for an explicit scope and lifetime. This adds state, cleanup, observability, and recovery work, but it addresses the ambiguity that retrying systems otherwise leave to application logic.
