For downloads that need to continue while you are away, enable the PS5’s internet connection in Rest Mode. These steps can improve connection reliability or keep downloads running, but PlayStation does not publish guaranteed speed gains for them.
Start by checking whether the download is actually stalled
Open the PS5 download/upload queue and check whether the game or update is still progressing. If it appears stuck or your connection is failing, check PlayStation Network service status before changing console settings. PlayStation notes that a connection line can be temporarily busy when its connection-error troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.

Try a wired connection
If you can run a LAN cable from your router to the PS5, test it in place of Wi-Fi. PlayStation recommends using a wired connection where possible in its PS5 connection-error troubleshooting. A cable can help you determine whether Wi-Fi is contributing to an unstable connection; it cannot overcome limits caused by your internet plan, network congestion, router performance, or PlayStation service conditions.

- On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Choose Set Up Wired LAN, then select Connect.
These menu labels are based on PlayStation’s wired setup instructions; wording can vary by locale or software version. The instructions appear on a Brazilian Portuguese regional support page.

If you use Wi-Fi, improve the signal path
Move the PS5 closer to the router and reduce obstructions between them. Walls, furniture, and distance can weaken the wireless connection. PlayStation includes moving the console closer to the router and reducing interference or obstructions among its connection-error troubleshooting steps. Retest the download after changing the console’s position so you can tell whether the signal path made a difference.
Keep downloads running in Rest Mode
Rest Mode does not make an active network connection faster, but it lets downloads continue while the console is resting if the required setting is enabled. PlayStation’s instructions are in its guide to PS5 power-saving and Rest Mode settings.

- Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- To manage game and app updates, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates.
- Choose Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode, as appropriate for the updates you want.
Auto-Download and Auto-Install are separate options. Some updates may still require your approval.

If the connection is still slow or failing
For persistent connection problems, PlayStation recommends restarting your modem and router after waiting at least five minutes. You can also check whether router firmware updates are available. If the problem continues, contact your internet service provider about advanced router settings.

PlayStation’s connection-error page also discusses options such as ports, a static IP address, and temporarily changing DNS settings. Treat these as troubleshooting for a connection error, not default speed tweaks. PlayStation does not establish that switching to a public DNS provider will generally increase PS5 download speeds.

If a game cannot download or install because the console is short on space, adding a compatible M.2 SSD may provide more storage. PlayStation explains the PS5’s storage options. Extra storage can address capacity constraints, but the cited guidance does not say an M.2 SSD increases the speed of a network download.
