On iPhone, review access in Settings > Privacy & Security. On Android, review permissions by app or category; menu names and options vary by Android version and phone maker. These controls help limit access on your device, but they do not by themselves control account activity, all location inference, or emergency-location sharing.
Audit app permissions first
Review which apps can access sensitive data before changing settings. An app may not appear in a permission category until it has requested that access.

On iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Choose a category such as Location Services, Contacts, Photos, Bluetooth, Microphone, Camera, or Health.
- Review the apps listed and change access where it is not needed.

On Android
To review a particular app, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions. To review access by type, look for Permission manager or the privacy and permissions section in Settings. If the labels differ, use Settings search for “permissions” or the permission name. Google’s Android permission guide notes that apps can request access to features such as the camera or contacts list.

Choose location access app by app
Location access can support maps, weather, ride-hailing, and emergency assistance. Give each app only the level of access that fits its purpose; a map app used only while navigating may not need continuous background access.
iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Select an app and review its available access choices.
- Choose the least access that still supports the feature you use, or turn access off if it is unnecessary.
Apple’s Location Services documentation explains app-level location controls. Exact choices can change across iOS releases.
Android
Open the app’s permissions and review its location access. Depending on the Android version, device, and app, choices may include Allow all the time, access only while using the app, ask every time, or deny. Where offered, turn off Use precise location if approximate location is sufficient. Google explains these options in its permission guidance and location-sharing guidance.

Some Android devices may show a disclosure when an app says it shares location data with third parties. Its presence depends on device and store support and on information supplied by the developer. A missing disclosure is not proof that no sharing occurs.
Review camera and microphone access
Check which apps can use the camera and microphone, and remove access that is not needed. Both platforms offer app-level controls; supported Android devices also offer device-wide switches.
iPhone
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and then Microphone to review app access. Apple says an iPhone shows a green indicator when the camera is in use and an orange indicator when the microphone is in use. See Apple’s hardware-access guide.

Android
Review camera and microphone permissions for individual apps. On supported devices, device-wide Camera access and Microphone access controls can pause access quickly. The switches and their locations vary by device; consult Settings search or Google’s permission guide.
Use permission-history tools to check actual access
iPhone: App Privacy Report
In Settings > Privacy & Security, open App Privacy Report to review information about apps’ use of granted permissions and their network activity. Apple describes the report in its iPhone privacy guide. It is a review aid, not a complete account of every data practice or every piece of information an app collects.
Android: Privacy Dashboard
Open Privacy Dashboard from the privacy settings area to see which apps accessed selected permissions and when. Google’s documented history window is seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12; those version-specific windows should not be assumed for every current handset. Details are in Google’s Privacy Dashboard guidance.

Review tracking and unused apps
iPhone tracking requests
Review Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking to decide whether apps may ask permission to track you across other companies’ apps and websites. Apple Support states in its Control what you share on iPhone guide: “All apps are required to ask your permission before tracking you or your iPhone across websites or apps owned by other companies (for example, for advertising or to share your information with data brokers).” This is a specific permission mechanism; it does not mean all collection or tracking stops.
Android unused-app settings
Android’s unused-app controls can pause app activity and remove permissions for apps you have not used. Review these options in the app’s settings or permissions page; availability and labels depend on the device and Android version. Google describes them in its permission guide.

App permissions govern particular access on the device. They are not the same as account-level activity settings or a company’s data practices. For example, Google says an on-device personalization index can be configured to choose which app data feeds it, while enabled Web & App Activity may still save app activity in the Google Account. See Google’s shared-data settings guidance.

Turning off device location also does not necessarily prevent websites or apps from estimating a rough location from an IP address. Google explains this exposure and mentions VPNs in its privacy guidance. A VPN relates to that IP-based exposure; it does not replace app permission controls.
Likewise, turning off the device’s location setting may affect location-based features, but should not be treated as a guarantee that no location will reach emergency responders. Emergency location services or a carrier may still transmit location during an emergency. Google details this distinction in its Android location settings guide.
