In PowerPoint desktop, select a slide, open Transitions, and under Advance Slide choose After. Enter how long the slide should stay on screen. Use Apply to All for the same interval across the deck, or set different times on individual slides.
Set a fixed automatic advance time
- In Normal view, select the slide whose timing you want to change.
- Open Transitions.
- In the Timing group, find Advance Slide and select After.
- Enter the interval in minutes and seconds. The slide advances after that interval; Microsoft notes that the timer starts after the slide’s final animation or other effect finishes. See Microsoft’s transition timing instructions.
- Repeat for slides that need different timings. For one interval throughout the presentation, choose Apply to All.
- Start the show from the beginning or from the selected slide to check the timing and order.
If On Mouse Click remains selected as well as After, a click can advance the slide before its timer expires. Turn off On Mouse Click if you want the timer to be the only way to advance. If neither a timer nor another advance method is selected, the slide advances on a click, according to Microsoft’s guidance.

Record different timings by rehearsing
When slides need different viewing times, rehearse the presentation instead of entering each interval manually. Choose Slide Show > Rehearse Timings, then proceed through the slides at the pace you want. Save the timings when PowerPoint prompts you. Microsoft’s rehearsal guide explains that the toolbar can pause or resume the timer, repeat the current slide, and accept a specific time entered in the Slide Time box. Slide Sorter view shows the time allotted to each slide.

Choose the right slide-show behavior
| Show type | How advancement works | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Presented by a speaker (full screen) | The presenter controls when slides advance; timing can also be recorded for playback. | You are presenting live and want control over pacing. |
| Browsed by an individual (window) | The viewer cannot control slide advancement. | You want a windowed presentation with viewer navigation disabled. |
| Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) | The presentation loops until Esc; set slide timings for automatic advancement. | You are running an unattended display. |
These show types are configured in Slide Show > Set Up Slide Show. Their behaviors are described in Microsoft’s self-running presentation instructions.

Have the file open directly in slideshow mode
Automatic transition timing controls when slides change; it does not determine how the file opens. To have a presentation open directly as a slide show when double-clicked, save it as a PowerPoint Show (.ppsx). Microsoft notes that saving as .ppsx is not available in PowerPoint for the web. In the web version, start playback with Slide Show > From Beginning. See Microsoft’s PowerPoint Show instructions.

Use narration with slide timings
PowerPoint can record timings together with narration, or you can set the timings manually. During recording, it can capture the time spent on slides and animation steps. For manual intervals, use Transitions > Timing > Advance Slide > After. Microsoft’s recording guide covers both options.

Can you set timings on a phone or tablet?
Microsoft says slide timings can only be set in the PowerPoint desktop application because the mobile apps do not include the advanced transition timing features. If you are using a phone or tablet, configure the timings in desktop PowerPoint. See Microsoft’s mobile timing support page.
Ribbon layout and labels can vary between PowerPoint versions and platforms, but look for the Transitions tab and the Advance Slide controls.
