How to Make Playwright Screenshots Consistent Across Linux and macOS

Playwright screenshots can vary across Linux and macOS. Use one pinned environment for stable regression checks, or maintain platform-specific baselines when both operating systems matter.

For the most dependable Playwright visual comparisons, generate and check each screenshot baseline in the same pinned environment. Linux and macOS can render differently because of the host operating system, fonts, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. If both platforms matter, keep separate Linux and macOS baselines rather than trying to make one snapshot represent both.

Playwright’s guidance is direct: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” Playwright’s visual comparison guide explains why browser and platform are part of its default snapshot naming.

Why do Playwright screenshots differ on Linux and macOS?

A screenshot is the rendered result of more than your page code. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system and version, settings, hardware, power source, and whether the browser is headless. Fonts and other platform-dependent rendering behavior can also change pixels.

That means a Linux screenshot and a macOS screenshot should not be assumed to match pixel for pixel—even when the page, browser engine, and viewport appear equivalent. No universal Linux/macOS mismatch rate or guarantee of pixel identity is established by Playwright’s documentation.

Choose one canonical baseline or separate baselines by platform

Use one canonical environment for simpler regression checks

If the goal is to detect UI changes in one stable rendering lane, choose a single OS/browser environment for both baseline creation and CI comparison. This reduces cross-platform noise, but answers only whether the UI changed in that canonical renderer.

Keep separate baselines when both platforms are product requirements

If you need visual assurance on both Linux and macOS, run each as its own project or snapshot namespace and create its baseline on that platform. Review each baseline against its own platform-specific output. Playwright’s default snapshot naming convention incorporates browser and platform, reflecting that they are distinct rendering contexts.

Separate lanes provide platform-specific coverage, with the trade-off of more snapshots to review and maintain. Neither strategy makes operating systems render identically; choose according to what your team needs to verify.

Make the capture environment repeatable

  1. Choose the browser engine and environment. Pin the Playwright package and browser installation, and use a consistent runner image for each baseline lane. Keeping the OS, browser version, viewport, scale, fonts, and runner image stable is practical implementation advice based on Playwright’s environment-parity guidance; the documentation does not provide a complete pinning recipe.
  2. Create and review the baseline in its intended lane. Run the test in the chosen environment, inspect the images, and commit reviewed snapshots to version control.
  3. Compare in the same lane. Run CI visual comparisons in the environment that generated the corresponding baseline. For two-platform coverage, generate and compare Linux snapshots on Linux and macOS snapshots on macOS.
  4. Update only after review. For an intentional design change, refresh snapshots with --update-snapshots in the canonical environment for that baseline, inspect the resulting images, then commit them.

Stabilize the page before capturing it

Matching environments cannot make changing page content deterministic. Control test data and time-dependent values, and wait for application readiness before asserting on a screenshot. For unavoidable volatile elements, Playwright supports a stylesheet through stylePath; the visual comparison guide shows using such a stylesheet to hide content that should not affect the comparison.

Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion retries capture until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the result with the baseline. This can help with capture instability, but it does not equalize Linux and macOS, install missing fonts, or stabilize external content on your behalf. Design application-specific readiness checks for the page under test.

Set screenshot scale and comparison tolerance deliberately

Keep scale the same within each baseline lane

Page screenshots can use CSS pixels or device pixels. Playwright Test screenshot assertions document CSS scale as the default: one output pixel per CSS pixel. Device scale reflects device pixels, so high-DPI output can be larger. Set scale intentionally and do not change it between baseline generation and comparison. See the PageAssertions API and Page API for the installed version’s details.

Use tolerances to express acceptance, not to fix rendering

Playwright provides a perceived color threshold and pixel-count or pixel-ratio tolerances such as maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio. Start with strict or default settings, inspect actual diffs, and add narrow tolerances only for understood noise. A looser threshold changes what the comparator accepts; it does not make Linux and macOS render the same, and an overly permissive allowance can hide real layout, font, or rendering regressions. Consult the rolling TestConfig API for your installed Playwright version.

Troubleshoot inconsistent snapshots

  • Diffs appear only when CI runs: Check that baseline generation and CI use the same OS lane, browser installation and version, viewport, scale, fonts, and runner image. Playwright lists environment differences as possible causes.
  • Linux and macOS disagree despite identical test code: Treat them as separate visual environments and maintain separate baselines if both need coverage. Increasing tolerance is not a substitute for platform-specific snapshots.
  • The diff changes between repeated runs in one environment: Check for animations, asynchronous application state, time-dependent values, uncontrolled test data, and external content. Wait for the application’s meaningful ready state and use a narrowly scoped stylePath stylesheet for unavoidable volatile elements.
  • Images differ in size or sharpness: Confirm that the baseline and assertion use the same scale. CSS scale is the documented default for screenshot assertions; device scale can produce larger output on high-DPI displays.
  • A tolerance lets an unexpected change pass: Reduce or remove the allowance, inspect the image diff, and retain only a narrowly justified threshold or pixel limit. Comparator settings govern acceptance, not platform rendering.
  • The screenshot assertion is unavailable or behaves differently: toHaveScreenshot() is a Playwright Test assertion and screenshot assertions work with the Playwright test runner. Check the API documentation corresponding to the installed version before relying on a default or option.
