To add CSS to a page before a regular Playwright screenshot, navigate to it, await page.addStyleTag(), then call page.screenshot(). If the CSS should affect only the screenshot and not become part of the page document, use the screenshot-time style option instead. For Playwright Test visual assertions, use stylePath.
Add CSS to the page before a regular screenshot
page.addStyleTag() injects CSS into the page document. You can provide CSS as a string with content, or point to a stylesheet using path or url. Await the call so the stylesheet is in place before capture.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.addStyleTag({
content: `
.cookie-banner { display: none !important; }
body { background: #fff; }
`,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
await browser.close();
})();
Replace the sample URL and CSS with your target page and desired styles. To use a local CSS file instead, pass { path: './screenshot.css' }; to load a stylesheet by URL, pass { url: 'https://example.com/screenshot.css' }.

| Use case | API | Stylesheet input |
|---|---|---|
| Style the page document before a regular screenshot | page.addStyleTag() |
Inline content, local path, or stylesheet url |
| Apply CSS only while taking a regular screenshot | page.screenshot({ style }) |
CSS string in style |
| Apply a stylesheet during a Playwright Test visual assertion | expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ stylePath }) |
Stylesheet file path in stylePath |
The screenshot-time style option and assertion stylePath were added in Playwright v1.41. Use the API matching your task: page.screenshot() takes a CSS string for style, while toHaveScreenshot() takes a stylesheet path for stylePath.

Apply a string only during a regular screenshot
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.png',
style: `
.cookie-banner { display: none !important; }
body { background: #fff; }
`,
});
This is useful for screenshot-specific adjustments, such as hiding an animated element, without adding the stylesheet to the page beforehand.
Use a stylesheet file for a Playwright Test assertion
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('page screenshot', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ stylePath: './screenshot.css' });
});
Keep stylePath with the screenshot assertion API; for a standalone page.screenshot(), use its style string option instead. Screenshot assertions are available through the Playwright Test runner, not as a general-purpose replacement for page.screenshot().

Put the CSS at the right point in the capture sequence
- Navigate: call
await page.goto(url). - Wait for the page state you need: for example, wait for a selector that indicates the relevant content is ready.
- Apply CSS: await
page.addStyleTag()for page-level styling, or supplystyleorstylePathto the screenshot operation. - Capture: call
page.screenshot()or run the Playwright Test assertion.
For screenshot assertions, Playwright waits until two consecutive screenshots produce the same result before comparing with the expected image. This helps with stabilization, but does not make rendering identical across different environments.

Style content inside an iframe
If the element you need to change lives inside a particular iframe, use frame.addStyleTag() on that frame. A stylesheet added to the main page document does not automatically become a stylesheet inside a separate frame. The screenshot-time style option is documented to apply across inner frames as well.

Make visual captures more repeatable
CSS can hide or normalize page elements that vary between runs, but it cannot control every source of pixel differences. Playwright’s visual comparisons guidance notes that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors can affect rendering. For dependable comparisons, create and compare baselines in the same environment, and use screenshot CSS to control page-level dynamic content rather than treating it as a guarantee of identical output everywhere.
Troubleshooting
- The CSS has no effect: confirm the selector matches the target element, the stylesheet is applied after navigation, and the awaited
addStyleTag()finishes before capture. If the target is in an iframe, apply the CSS to that frame. - A stylesheet file is not found: check the path relative to the process working directory and ensure the file is available where the test runs. For a remote stylesheet, check that the URL can be loaded by the browser.
- The screenshot still contains an element you tried to hide: verify that the element is present when the CSS runs and that the selector is specific enough. For screenshot-only CSS, pass the CSS string as
style; for a page-level change, useaddStyleTag(). styleorstylePathis rejected: those options were added in Playwright v1.41. Check the installed Playwright version. Also make surestyleis used withpage.screenshot(), andstylePathwithtoHaveScreenshot().- Visual comparisons differ across machines: run baseline creation and comparison under the same browser and operating-system conditions where possible; screenshot CSS does not eliminate differences in rendering environments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does `page.addStyleTag()` permanently change the website?
It adds a stylesheet to the page document in the current browser page; it does not alter the website’s server-side source files.
Can I use `stylePath` with `page.screenshot()`?
No. Use the CSS string option `style` with `page.screenshot()`; `stylePath` is for Playwright Test’s `toHaveScreenshot()` assertion.
