To make pixel art for a retro-style game, choose a consistent visual scale, draw and organize assets in a pixel-focused editor, build animations from frames, then export files in a format your game can import. Test the exported art in the project early: the right canvas dimensions and sheet layout depend on how your game displays and imports assets, not on a universal pixel-art standard.
How do I make pixel art for a game?
- Choose the game’s visual scale. Decide how large characters, props, and environmental details should appear in the game, then use sprite dimensions that support that scale. Keep the choices consistent across the project; there is no single canvas size that suits every game. A sprite’s pixel dimensions are part of its document setup, so settle on a scale before creating a large asset set. Aseprite’s basics documentation explains the sprite document workflow.
- Create a sprite and draw it at the intended size. A sprite document contains the image and its working structure. Draw with pixel-focused tools, and preserve an editable project as you work so you can return to its layers and frames rather than relying only on exported images. Aseprite’s help documentation covers its use for pixel-art graphics and animation.
- Separate artwork into layers when useful. Layers keep components distinct and make revisions easier to manage. In Aseprite’s terminology, each layer at each frame has a cel: a sprite is a sequence of frames and a stack of layers. See the Aseprite basics guide for the document model.
- Make and review animation frames. Each frame is a still image; playing a sequence of frames produces the animation. Use the editor timeline to organize the cels and preview motion. The documentation does not prescribe a required frame count or frame rate, so choose those based on the motion you want and how it looks in the game.
- Export for the game pipeline. Keep the editable source project, then export the deliverable your workflow needs: an individual PNG, a numbered sequence of PNG frames, or a sprite sheet. Aseprite documents export controls and output formats, including PNG and GIF, and sprite-sheet import and export controls.
- Import and check it in the game. Match the sheet layout and any metadata to the importer used by your engine. If you use Godot, the Godot Asset Library’s Aseprite importer entry describes importing Aseprite-generated sheets and metadata. Treat that as one specific workflow, and verify compatibility with your current project and engine version.
What size should a pixel art sprite be?
There is no universal sprite canvas size established by the cited documentation. Decide how large the art should appear in your game, choose dimensions that support that display scale, and apply the decision consistently to characters, props, and environments. Avoid resizing assets arbitrarily later: changing dimensions can disrupt the visual scale you established across the project.

How should I choose a pixel-art editor?
Dedicated sprite editors are one option; tools already in your art or game-development pipeline may also work. Aseprite is a documented example with support for drawing, layers, animation, and export, but the available documentation does not establish that it is better than other editors. How do I export a sprite sheet for a game?
Choose the export format and sheet arrangement based on the target importer rather than assuming one layout works everywhere. Aseprite’s sprite-sheet documentation describes controls for selecting visible layers and animation tags during export, as well as offsets and dimensions when importing a sheet. After export, confirm that the engine interprets the frames, offsets, and metadata as intended; for Godot, the Asset Library importer is a specific option for Aseprite-generated sheets and metadata.
