How to Make PhantomJS Screenshots Wait for Images and Fonts

PhantomJS’s page-load callback is only an initial checkpoint. Use bounded image checks and resource diagnostics, and verify font behavior in your exact runtime.

PhantomJS’s page.open() callback is a page-load checkpoint, not a guarantee that every image and font affecting the screenshot has finished loading. Keep image loading enabled, set a resource timeout before opening the page, then wait for image completion and inspect resource callbacks for failures. For fonts, PhantomJS’s documentation does not establish support for the modern document.fonts.ready API, so use bounded resource tracking and verify results in the exact PhantomJS build you run.

Why page load completion is not visual readiness

The documented PhantomJS screen-capture example calls page.render() from the page.open() callback. That callback corresponds to page.onLoadFinished. It marks an initial loading milestone, but it is not a documented promise that every later image, font, or layout change has settled. Pages can render in stages, and a late image or font can alter the captured appearance.

PhantomJS describes itself as using WebKit, a real layout and rendering engine, to capture a page as a screenshot. That does not mean it waits automatically for all visual updates. See the official screen-capture documentation and WebPage API documentation.

Wait for images with a bounded check

Configure resource loading before opening the page

Image loading is enabled by default; explicitly keeping page.settings.loadImages set to true makes the intent clear. Set page.settings.resourceTimeout before the initial page.open() call. It limits how long resource requests can wait, in milliseconds. A resource timeout is not a substitute for an overall screenshot deadline: keep a separate hard deadline so a script cannot poll forever.

Check image completion and failures

After the page-load callback succeeds, inspect document.images in the page context and poll until each image has completed or the overall deadline expires. A completed image can still have failed: check naturalWidth as well as complete. Report complete-but-failed images rather than treating them as successful readiness.

PhantomJS exposes resource request, response, and error callbacks. Use them to record relevant URLs and diagnose resources that fail or stall. For images, the page-context check gives you a direct completion signal; the callbacks provide useful diagnostics.

Handle fonts without assuming a modern readiness API

The retrieved PhantomJS API documentation does not establish that document.fonts.ready, part of the modern CSS Font Loading API, is available in PhantomJS. Do not build a script that assumes it works. Instead, record likely font requests and failures through the resource callbacks, then use a short, bounded settling interval after the main load and the image check. This is operational guidance, not an official PhantomJS guarantee that fonts have painted.

If the font request succeeds but the screenshot still shows a fallback, investigate the font URL, format, host environment, and the precise PhantomJS/WebKit build. Verify the result against the runtime and page you actually use; support can differ between legacy binaries and target sites.

Example capture flow

The following pattern shows the order of operations, but it is not a tested drop-in script. In particular, PhantomJS APIs are callback-oriented; adapt the polling callback form to the exact PhantomJS version in use. A production version should collect failed URLs, distinguish failed images from successful ones, track likely font requests, and enforce an overall deadline.

  1. Set image loading and the resource timeout before page.open().
  2. Attach resource callbacks to log requested, received, and failed resources.
  3. Open the page and stop with a clear error if the load status is not successful.
  4. Poll image completion in the page context. Treat naturalWidth === 0 as a failed image, not a successful load.
  5. When images finish or the hard deadline expires, wait a short settling interval, render, and report any pending or failed resources.

For example, the page-context predicate for image readiness can be adapted from this JavaScript:

var allComplete = images.every(function (img) { return img.complete; });
var failed = images.filter(function (img) {
  return img.complete && img.naturalWidth === 0;
});

Run that predicate through page.evaluate() during polling. Clear the polling timer when readiness is reached or the deadline expires; do not leave a repeated timer active after rendering. If the deadline expires, decide explicitly whether to save a partial screenshot with a diagnostic or exit with an error.

Fixed delay or readiness checks?

Approach When it helps Limit
Fixed delay after page load Simple pages with predictable, short resource delays. May be too short on a slow page and wastes time on a fast one; by itself it does not identify failed resources or guarantee a hard stop.
Image readiness polling plus resource callbacks Pages where image completion and failed-resource diagnosis matter. Requires polling, failure handling, and a separate overall deadline; font painting still needs verification for the chosen runtime.
Readiness checks plus a short settling interval Pages where late font or layout work may affect the capture. The settling interval is only a bounded practical measure, not a documented all-fonts-painted signal.

Troubleshooting incomplete captures

The screenshot has missing images

  • Confirm page.settings.loadImages is true before opening the page.
  • Check whether the image is still incomplete when the deadline expires.
  • Use the resource callbacks to identify failed requests, and inspect naturalWidth for images that completed unsuccessfully.
  • Increase resource and overall deadlines only when the page’s legitimate load time warrants it; retain a hard cap.

The screenshot uses a fallback font

  • Check the recorded font request URL and whether the request failed.
  • Verify the font format, host environment, and exact PhantomJS/WebKit build.
  • Do not rely on document.fonts.ready unless you have verified that API in the exact runtime.
  • Use a short settling period after resource checks, then test the captured result rather than assuming a successful response proves the intended font was painted.

The script hangs or renders too early

  • Set resourceTimeout before page.open() and maintain a separate overall deadline.
  • Ensure every polling path clears its timer, including timeout and error paths.
  • Do not treat the page.open() callback alone as proof that all later visual changes have finished.
  • On timeout, either save a clearly diagnosed partial image or exit with an error; do not wait without limit.

When maintaining PhantomJS is not the right fit

PhantomJS is a legacy renderer, and a hosted renderer may be worth considering when compatibility with a target site, control over the runtime, maintenance cost, or privacy requirements make a local binary unsuitable. Check any alternative’s current browser backend, supported controls, terms, and pricing before switching.
