To make an older PC game run better on a modern computer, first identify the exact game and symptom, then apply one reversible, game-specific fix at a time. Check for an official update before changing Windows settings. DOS games, older Windows games with graphics problems, and titles that simply run slowly need different remedies; no single compatibility setting works for all of them.
Identify what is going wrong before changing settings
A game that will not launch needs a different diagnosis from one that launches but stutters, runs too fast, displays incorrectly, or has trouble in fullscreen. Intel lists launch failures, slow gameplay, fullscreen problems, and rendering artifacts among issues that can affect some older titles on Windows 10. Microsoft explains that apps can become incompatible with newer Windows versions because of changes to OS architecture, security features, or system requirements (Microsoft Support).

Before troubleshooting, note the game title and edition, where you obtained it, your Windows version, CPU and graphics hardware, and the exact error or behavior. Check the game’s own system requirements and preserve your saves. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it helped and undo it if it did not. There is no universal benchmark or guaranteed fix for unspecified games.
Try official fixes and Windows compatibility settings
Check the game’s publisher or storefront first
Look for an official patch, updated edition, or compatibility note for your exact version. Microsoft recommends checking the publisher’s website for updates; if none is available, use the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Open Windows Settings and search for Program Compatibility Troubleshooter, then follow its prompts for the affected app. Windows labels and navigation can vary by version.

Test compatibility options individually
Intel’s guidance is specifically for Windows 10 with Intel HD/UHD graphics, not every modern PC. It suggests testing administrator mode and a compatibility mode, then considering reduced color, a 640×480 resolution, or disabling high-DPI display scaling. Intel also notes that a game may require a component such as DirectX 9 or earlier that Windows 10 no longer installs automatically (Intel Support, last reviewed 2024-05-08).

Treat those settings as experiments rather than a checklist to enable all at once: test one, launch the game, and revert it if the display or behavior gets worse. If a legacy runtime is missing, use a trustworthy official Microsoft or game-publisher route where available; avoid random download sites.

| MS-DOS game | DOSBox | Designed to emulate a DOS-era x86 PC environment; follow the project’s setup instructions and game-specific guidance. |
| Windows game with a legacy graphics API issue | A title-specific graphics wrapper, such as dgVoodoo 2 or DxWrapper | Use only when instructions for the exact game and version point to it; wrappers are not general speed boosters. |
| Windows 11 game running windowed or borderless | Windows’ windowed-game optimization | Applies to compatible DirectX 10/11 games in windowed or borderless mode; enable or disable per game and restart it. |
| Game plays slowly without a clear compatibility error | Check the game’s own graphics settings, frame-rate limit, and Windows GPU or power selection | These checks may identify a configuration issue, but do not establish that hardware upgrades will fix compatibility or game timing. |
For DOS games, use DOSBox
DOSBox emulates an x86 PC, including sound, graphics, mouse, and joystick, to run many DOS games that do not run directly on modern operating systems. Its project documentation describes this DOS-game focus (DOSBox wiki). Start with its setup documentation and resources for the particular game rather than treating it as a solution for later Windows titles.

For Windows games, investigate graphics wrappers only when indicated
Some later games depend on older graphics APIs or behavior that modern systems handle differently. A wrapper may help with a specific DirectDraw, Direct3D, or Glide problem, but its suitability depends on the title and version. Consult game-specific instructions before changing game files, use the official project download, and keep a way to restore the original files. PCGamingWiki identifies dgVoodoo 2 and DxWrapper among tools used for particular compatibility issues.
Use Windows 11 windowed-game optimization only within its scope
Microsoft’s windowed-game optimization targets compatible DirectX 10/11 games running windowed or borderless. Microsoft says it can reduce frame latency and supports a per-game toggle; restart the game after changing it. Find the game under Settings > System > Display > Graphics to adjust its graphics options. If the display gets worse, turn the option off for that game and restart it (Microsoft Support). This feature is not a general fix for older games.

If the game is still slow or will not launch
Use the remaining symptom to narrow the next step. A missing runtime, DRM check, unsupported 16-bit code, obsolete graphics API, or game speed tied to frame rate can require different treatment. Intel notes that 16-bit applications are not supported on 64-bit Windows in the environment covered by its guidance; this is distinct from ordinary 32-bit Windows games. Do not assume a compatibility mode can overcome that limitation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- It will not launch: record the exact error, check for a publisher update, and investigate whether a required runtime or DRM component is involved.
- It launches but renders incorrectly: check the game’s version-specific display or graphics instructions before trying a wrapper.
- It runs slowly or too quickly: inspect in-game settings, frame-rate limits, and GPU selection. Some titles may tie game speed to frame rate, so a generic performance tweak could make behavior worse.
- Generic fixes fail: search using the exact title and version, Windows build, graphics hardware, edition/source, and error message. Match any proposed fix to those details and keep changes reversible.
These steps can help isolate a cause, but without a specific game and PC configuration there is no evidence-based way to promise a particular fix or performance improvement.
