To play several videos in a randomized order in OBS, add them to a VLC Video Source playlist and enable Shuffle Playlist in that source’s properties. You’ll need VLC installed, then you can connect OBS to YouTube Live and test the picture and audio before broadcasting.
Before you start
- Have the video files ready and accessible on the computer running OBS.
- Make sure live streaming is enabled for your YouTube channel. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Channels also need to be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Install VLC. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS lists its VLC Video Source as available on Windows, macOS, and Linux; consult the OBS Media Sources documentation for details.
Add the playlist and enable shuffle
- In OBS, go to the Sources dock, select the + button, and choose VLC Video Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- Open the source’s properties and add the video files you want in the playlist.
- Enable Shuffle Playlist. OBS defines the setting as: “Specifies if the source should randomize the media files being played or stay in the order of the file list.” The OBS documentation also lists Loop Playlist as on by default. Leave it enabled if you want the playlist to continue after it reaches the end.
- Confirm the source appears in the preview. Resize and position it to fit your scene. In the Sources list, items higher in the list appear above items below them, so place overlays accordingly.
Choose the right OBS source
| Source | Playlist support | VLC required | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source | Yes; includes playlist and shuffle controls | Yes | Rotating through multiple files in a randomized order |
| Media Source | Not described as a playlist source in OBS’s documentation | No VLC dependency is specified for this source | Playing a single audio or video file |
For this multi-file shuffle setup, use VLC Video Source. OBS documents the playlist feature as available when VLC is installed; a separate plugin is not needed for the basic shuffle task.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Follow YouTube’s setup guidance.
- In OBS, select YouTube as the service if it is available, or enter the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube uses it to tell the encoder where to send the feed; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Start a test stream or recording and check YouTube’s preview before the intended broadcast.
Test playback before going public
Check that the video fills the intended area, the audio is audible and correctly mixed, and any overlays are visible. Confirm that the playlist advances and that shuffle is enabled in the source properties. OBS recommends a short test stream or recording, and YouTube advises checking the preview and stream integrity before an event. See the OBS Quick Start Guide and YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
What shuffle does—and does not guarantee
OBS documents Shuffle Playlist as randomizing the media files rather than keeping the listed order. Its documentation does not specify the shuffle algorithm or promise that every clip will play once before any clip repeats. If a particular sequence or repeat pattern matters, review playback during a test rather than assuming a specific order.

The scene is cropped or covered by an overlay
Adjust the source’s size and position in the preview. If another source covers the video, reorder the items in the Sources dock; higher items appear above lower items.
