You can earn from streaming through subscriptions and paid live features, ads and Premium revenue sharing, sponsorships, affiliate commissions, memberships, and merchandise—not just tips. Which routes you can use depends on platform eligibility, audience fit, the work you can sustain, and the rules attached to each sale or endorsement. None guarantees income.
How do I make money on Twitch—and other platforms?
Start by separating ways viewers pay you from revenue tied to ads, brands, or purchases. A channel can combine several routes, but each has different access rules and demands. Twitch Creator Camp covers subscriptions, Bits, extensions, ads, and sponsorships; YouTube’s live-creator guidance describes Partner Program revenue sharing, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and brand partnerships. YouTube monetization features are subject to channel policy compliance and are not automatically available to every new live channel.

Twitch’s May 2026 announcement said eligible streamers globally would receive access to Channel Points, subscriptions, emotes, badges, and Bits. It also said streamers still need Affiliate or Partner status to receive a payout. The updated Affiliate milestones it listed were four streaming hours, four separate streaming days, at least three average concurrent viewers on four separate days, and 25 followers. These are Twitch-specific requirements and may change; check the current Twitch Help Center before planning around them. Twitch’s tool-access expansion should not be confused with payout eligibility.

Use these routes as a decision framework, not an earnings ranking. Compare how soon you can access each option, whether it depends on viewer spending, advertiser budgets, or purchases, how repeatable it is, the workload and upfront cost, platform dependence, and any disclosure, rights, or refund obligations. Build a sponsorship offer carefully
A sponsorship may fit when a brand’s product or service makes sense for your audience and you can clearly define what the brand receives. Before agreeing, write down the deliverables, schedule, payment terms, content approval expectations, usage rights, exclusivity, and how cancellations are handled. Disclose the relationship to viewers.
Twitch has described a Sponsorships dashboard and StreamElements as its first partner for sponsorship offers. Twitch’s announcement distinguished access for Partners and Affiliates and noted language differences. That does not establish that every streamer can access every campaign now; check the dashboard and the specific campaign terms before relying on it.

Use affiliate links without misleading viewers
Affiliate links can suit streams where viewers ask about products or services that genuinely relate to the content. Explain plainly that you may earn a commission, placing the disclosure close to the recommendation or link. The FTC says an affiliate link by itself may not make the payment relationship clear, and creators should not describe product experience they have not had.
For a livestream, repeat the disclosure periodically: viewers arrive at different times and may miss an earlier notice. Make memberships and merchandise sustainable
A membership works best when the promised benefits are clear and realistic to deliver alongside your regular stream. Avoid building an obligation that turns every week into a growing list of exclusive content. Patreon says creators are responsible for fulfilling promised benefits and managing refunds, so include that work in your decision.
Merchandise is another possible route when viewers already identify with a channel or community. First consider whether there is demonstrated demand, then account for production and fulfillment costs, stock risk, returns, and where your audience lives. Do not assume sales volume or profit from audience size alone.

What the available figures do—and do not—show
Twitch said in a January 24, 2024 payout-program update that over one million streamers earn money on Twitch each month. That is a platform-wide count, not a typical income figure, a measure of full-time earnings, or a promise that a new streamer will earn. Avoid treating top-creator anecdotes or platform-wide totals as a forecast for your channel.
As London School of Economics researcher Zoe Glatt told TIME, “Content creators are required to diversify their labor and income streams across many platforms and projects if they hope to build sustainable audiences and careers.” Diversification can reduce dependence on one income route, but it also adds work and does not ensure a particular result.

Choose a first route you can maintain
- Check access first. Review current platform eligibility, payout rules, geographic availability, and any policy requirements for the feature you want to use.
- Match the route to your audience. Ask whether viewers are more likely to value paid community access, a relevant product recommendation, or a brand partnership—not merely whether a feature exists.
- Calculate the real workload and cost. Include stream time, preparation, fulfillment, refunds, campaign obligations, and any production or inventory expense.
- Make terms and disclosures clear. Put sponsorship deliverables in writing, disclose affiliate relationships near recommendations, and describe membership benefits accurately.
- Review results without assuming permanence. Track effort as well as revenue, and recheck platform terms because eligibility and features can change.
