Keep livekit.yaml outside the replaceable container and configure the LiveKit service to read it. In Docker Compose, a bind mount is usually the simplest way to expose a host-side configuration file inside the container. The mount destination and startup command must match your Compose file and LiveKit image version; there is no single mount line that applies to every deployment.
Why container recreation can lose configuration
A container’s writable filesystem is not a reliable home for configuration you need to survive replacing or upgrading that container. Store the authoritative YAML in a stable host directory or an explicitly persistent Docker volume, then arrange for the LiveKit process to read that copy when the service starts.
LiveKit documents production configuration through either a file passed with --config or the YAML body supplied through the LIVEKIT_CONFIG environment variable. A Compose mount makes a host file available inside the container; it does not, by itself, make the server use that file.
Choose where the authoritative file lives
Bind mount: keep a readable project or deployment file
For a configuration maintained as a text file, a bind mount is often the most straightforward choice. Keep livekit.yaml beside the Compose project or at the stable deployment path used by your operations, and map it into the container at a path your service command can read. You can edit and back up the host file directly, and it can travel with the project if your deployment workflow supports that.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Named volume: let Docker manage the storage location
A named volume can also provide storage that remains separate from a particular container. It may suit a workflow where Docker-managed storage is preferred, but inspecting or editing a configuration file inside the volume can be less convenient. Plan how you will initialize, edit, back up, and migrate the file, and check file ownership and permissions inside the container.
These are general Docker trade-offs, not LiveKit-specific requirements. LiveKit’s deployment guidance documents file-based configuration and generated deployment files; it does not prescribe one universal mount type or path.

Connect the host file to the LiveKit service
- Find the Compose project and service definition. Identify the LiveKit service, the image and version it runs, and any existing
command, entrypoint, volumes, orenvironmentsettings. Do not replace an existing startup command without checking what it does. - Put the YAML in a stable host-side location. Keep the file in the project directory or a persistent deployment directory, rather than creating or editing it only inside the running container.
- Mount the file into the container. Add a Compose bind mount from the host file to a container path. Choose a destination that the image and service can use, and preserve any existing mounts. The exact source and destination depend on your directory layout and image.
- Configure LiveKit to read the mounted file. Use the supported file configuration mechanism for the deployed server: pass the mounted path with
--config, or provide the YAML body throughLIVEKIT_CONFIG. If you choose the file option, the path in the command must match the mount destination. Check the image’s expected entrypoint and command syntax for its version before changing the service definition. - Apply the Compose change and verify the running service. Recreate the service as appropriate for your deployment, then confirm that the container sees the mounted file, has permission to read it, and starts with the intended configuration. Check the service logs and the effective Compose configuration if the server behaves as though it is still using defaults.
- Keep the host-side copy during upgrades. Replacing the container should not delete the host file or named volume that holds the authoritative YAML. Back up that storage as part of the deployment’s normal recovery process.
LiveKit’s production VM guide offers one concrete deployment context: it generates docker-compose.yaml, livekit.yaml, caddy.yaml, and redis.conf in a deployment directory, and its installation workflow places generated configuration under /opt/livekit. That layout belongs to the documented VM workflow; it is not a required path for every Compose installation. See the LiveKit VM deployment guide and adapt its instructions to your own service definition.
Check the configuration and deployment separately
- File and mount: Confirm the host source exists, the container destination is correct, and the process can read the file. A bind mount configured as a file mount can behave unexpectedly if the host-side source path is missing, so check the path before starting the service.
- Startup selection: A persistent file is ineffective if the server starts without the matching
--configpath, or if the environment configuration supplied to the service is not the YAML you intended. - Syntax and values: Validate the YAML and review the settings for the deployed server version. LiveKit’s deployment and configuration documentation describes production settings, including server ports, RTC, Redis, keys, and TURN.
- Networking: A mounted configuration does not publish ports through Compose or open them in a host firewall. Check the applicable port mappings and firewall rules for your deployment. LiveKit’s port reference lists API/WebSocket port 7880, ICE/UDP ports 50000–60000 by default, and ICE/TCP port 7881; it also documents UDP mux on 7882 when configured. Verify these values against your configuration and deployment rather than treating them as universal firewall instructions: LiveKit ports and firewall.
- Dependencies: Redis may be required by a production or distributed configuration, but Redis is a service dependency, not a persistence mechanism for
livekit.yaml.
Use production guidance for a production server
The local LiveKit guide starts the server with livekit-server --dev and directs readers to deployment documentation when customizing a production setup. Development mode is not a substitute for production configuration. For a production VM deployment, account for the domain, DNS, TLS, firewall, and WebRTC networking requirements in the deployment instructions. See the local self-hosting guide for its development context and the production VM guide for the deployment workflow.
