For the same route and sender outlay, calculate the recipient’s final local-currency amount after conversion and cash-out, then compare how long it takes those funds to become available.
Start with identical transfer assumptions
A comparison is meaningful only when each service is quoted for the same transfer. Record the details below before collecting offers:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Sending and receiving countries, and the currencies involved.
- Amount the sender will pay, not just the amount entered into a provider’s calculator.
- Crypto asset and network, if the service uses them.
- Funding source, such as a bank account, card, or existing crypto balance.
- Recipient payout method, such as a bank deposit, mobile wallet, or cash pickup.
- Date and time of each quote.
A service may be available in one country but not support the recipient’s preferred payout method in another. If a quote changes with the funding method, network, or payout option, compare the specific option the sender and recipient would actually use.

Work out the total cost and usable amount
The displayed transfer fee is only one possible charge. The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide methodology treats remittance price as potentially including the transaction fee, the exchange rate and its margin, and speed. It notes that the exchange-rate spread is not included in the transfer fee, and some recipient-country charges may not be tracked.

Record what the sender pays
For each quote, record the sender’s total outlay. Include disclosed provider fees and taxes, crypto network fees, funding or purchase charges, and any required intermediary costs. If the provider does not disclose a charge, do not assume it is zero; mark it as not stated and ask whether it applies.
Compare the offered exchange rate with a reference
Write down the actual rate the service offers for converting the relevant currencies, along with a named reference rate observed at the same time. The difference can indicate an exchange-rate spread—the cost embedded in the rate rather than listed as a transfer fee. Rates can move, so comparisons made at different times may not reveal which offer is cheaper.

Calculate what the recipient can use
Follow the money through conversion, payout, and any withdrawal or cash-out step. Record the amount the recipient will actually have available in local currency after required charges. The most useful price comparison is how much the recipient receives for the same sender outlay. If a fee is unknown or not disclosed, identify that uncertainty rather than treating the quoted payout as guaranteed.
Measure speed through recipient availability
Distinguish blockchain settlement from end-to-end delivery. A transaction can be confirmed on a network before the service has converted the asset, completed an off-ramp, credited a bank account, or made cash available for pickup.

Compare the estimated time until the recipient can access usable funds in the chosen payout form. The World Bank methodology measures speed by when funds are available to the receiver, not simply by a blockchain confirmation time. Ask what event starts the provider’s delivery estimate, whether it is an estimate or commitment, and how the recipient can track a delay.
Check access, reliability, and recourse
Price and estimated delivery time do not establish whether an offer is practical for a particular sender and recipient. Check these factors for the exact corridor:

- Availability: Is the service operating in both countries, and can it support the selected asset, network, funding source, and payout method?
- Recipient access: Can the recipient use the required app, wallet, bank account, or cash-pickup location? Consider internet access and the recipient’s familiarity with the process.
- Reliability and security: Review the service’s security information, transfer protections, and terms. Do not infer safety from the use of crypto or a fast settlement time.
- Tracking and support: Check whether the transfer can be tracked and what support is available if it is delayed, misdirected, or not received.
- Terms and charges: Look for conditions affecting conversion, payout, cancellations, refunds, and additional recipient-side costs.
The OECD’s 2026 transparency guidance identifies total transaction cost, including currency-conversion charges, expected delivery time, payment tracking, and terms of service as useful information for consumers to receive. Its application depends on the circumstances and relevant rules, but these are practical questions to ask of any offer.

Crypto does not automatically make an international transfer cheaper. The IMF’s 2023 policy paper says crypto may be relatively cost-efficient in some remittance cases, but the advantage becomes less clear when conversion between crypto and fiat currencies is included and is likely to vary by corridor. Cash-in and cash-out expenses, digital literacy, and internet access can also reduce potential benefits. Those observations are context, not current quotes for a specific provider or route.

For scale, the World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide homepage displayed a global average remittance cost of 6.36 percent and identified its Q3 2025 report as the latest shown. This is a broad remittance benchmark, not a crypto-only price or a prediction for an individual corridor. The World Bank Data Catalog metadata, last updated September 28, 2026, describes coverage of 377 country corridors, 48 sending countries, and 111 receiving countries, with temporal coverage from 2011 through 2025; the complete dataset is listed as updated September 23, 2026. These figures describe the dataset’s scope, not the availability or cost of any crypto service.
Use a dated comparison, then verify live quotes
- Choose the route and payout. Set the countries, currencies, transfer amount, funding source, asset and network if applicable, and recipient payout method.
- Collect offers close together in time. Record the quote time, sender total, conversion rate, reference rate, recipient amount, estimated availability time, and disclosed charges for each service.
- Check the recipient’s net amount. Include required conversion, payout, withdrawal, and cash-out charges. Note any costs the service does not state.
- Compare end-to-end availability. Use the time until usable funds reach the recipient, not just network confirmation or a marketing description such as “instant.”
- Review access and recourse. Confirm the service works for both countries and payout method, and understand tracking, terms, and support options.
- Recheck before sending. Provider prices and exchange rates can change. The World Bank cautions that its database prices are snapshots and should not substitute for current provider pricing.
For U.S. remittance transfers within the scope of the applicable rule, CFPB guidance says pre-payment disclosures generally include fees and taxes, the exchange rate, total transaction amount, and recipient amount. The CFPB also warns that providers may face liability under the CFPA for deceptive marketing about speed or cost. Its Consumer Financial Protection Circular 2024-02 states: “Remittance transfer providers may be liable under the CFPA for deceptive marketing about the speed or cost of sending a remittance transfer.” This is CFPB guidance concerning the CFPA and covered remittance transfers; it does not establish that every crypto arrangement is covered or that the same requirements apply in every jurisdiction.
