Set your preferred browser as the operating system’s default browser. Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android each have a different setting, and some apps—such as Outlook mobile—can override the system choice with their own “open links” preference.
What changing the default browser actually does
The default-browser setting tells your operating system which installed browser should handle ordinary web links. After you change it, tapping or clicking an HTTP or HTTPS link in most email messages, documents and apps should launch that browser automatically. Google’s Chrome Help describes the result this way: “When you set Chrome as your default browser, links open automatically in Chrome.”

This setting does not uninstall other browsers, delete bookmarks or move saved passwords. It only changes the application associated with web links. A browser must already be installed before you can select it, and the browser itself must support the platform’s default-app feature.
There are two important limits:
- An app can provide its own link-opening preference and ignore the operating system default.
- Some systems associate individual link types or file types separately, so one unusual link can behave differently from ordinary web pages.
Use the section for your device below, then test a link from the app where the problem occurred.

Windows 11 and Windows 10
Set your preferred browser as the default
- Install the browser you want to use, if it is not already installed.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- Find your preferred browser in the list, or search for its name.
- Open the browser’s default-app page and choose it for the web-link associations offered by Windows.
Windows may ask you to confirm individual associations rather than applying one large switch. Accept the HTTP and HTTPS choices if you want normal web links to open there. The exact confirmation wording can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11 updates.
Check a link type when only some links open elsewhere
Windows lets you assign an application to individual file types and link types. On the preferred browser’s page under Settings > Apps > Default apps, review the entries for web protocols and related file extensions. If HTTPS links use your preferred browser but another protocol or document type does not, select that entry and choose the browser explicitly.
This per-type check is especially useful when a link from a particular document, shortcut or helper application opens in a different browser while ordinary webpages follow your choice. It also prevents a broad reset when only one association is wrong.

Confirm the change
- Open an email or note containing a normal web link.
- Click the link once.
- Check which browser opens and whether the expected profile or account is selected.
If Windows opens a browser you did not choose, return to the default-app page and inspect the HTTP and HTTPS entries individually. A browser update or a Windows update can restore a different association, so rechecking those entries is more reliable than changing settings in the browser alone.

macOS Ventura 13 and later
Choose the default browser in System Settings
- Install your preferred browser.
- Open the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
- Choose System Settings.
- Select Desktop & Dock.
- Scroll to Default web browser.
- Choose the browser you want macOS to use.
The selected browser now handles ordinary web links opened by macOS applications. If the browser is missing from the menu, quit and reopen System Settings after installing it, then check that the installation completed successfully.
Earlier macOS versions
On macOS versions before Ventura 13, use Apple menu > System Preferences > General > Default web browser. Select the browser from that menu and close System Preferences. Apple’s path differs between the older System Preferences interface and Ventura’s System Settings interface, so use the path that matches the name shown on your Mac.
If only one Mac app behaves differently
First test a link from another app. If links work there, the system default is probably correct and the original app may have a separate preference, an embedded web view or a managed policy. Look in that app’s settings for wording such as open links, use in-app browser or open externally. Turn off an in-app browser option if you want links to leave the app and open in your macOS default.

iPhone
Change the Browser App setting
- Install a browser that supports Apple’s default-app feature.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default Apps.
- Tap Browser App.
- Select your preferred browser.
After selection, links tapped in apps that defer to iOS should open in that browser. The option only appears for browsers that support the default-app capability. If a newly installed browser is not listed, update the browser and iOS, then reopen Settings; if it still does not appear, that browser may not implement the feature.

Understand in-app browsers on iPhone
Some iPhone apps display a webpage inside their own built-in viewer instead of handing the link to the system. In that case, changing Browser App does not force the app’s internal viewer to close. Look for a share button, an “open in browser” command or an app setting that controls external links. The app developer decides whether a link is passed to the iOS default browser.
Android
Set the default browser
- Install the browser you want to use.
- Open your phone’s Settings.
- Find the section for default apps or app defaults.
- Open the Browser app or similarly named setting.
- Select the preferred browser.
Android’s official help confirms the function of this setting, but menu labels and navigation vary by device maker and Android version. A phone may place the control under Apps, Choose default apps, Special app access or a manufacturer-specific settings page. Use Settings search for default browser if you cannot find it by browsing menus.
When Android asks every time
If Android shows a chooser whenever you tap a link, select the preferred browser and choose Always when that option is offered. If you previously selected Just once, the chooser will continue to appear. You can normally change the decision from the browser-app default setting later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck manufacturer-specific behavior
Some Android interfaces add an app-level “open supported links” control. If ordinary web links use the preferred browser but links for a particular service do not, open that service’s entry under Settings > Apps and inspect its link-handling or supported-links options. The names differ by manufacturer, so follow the wording on your device rather than a menu path from another model.

Why one app may ignore your default browser
A system default applies only when an app asks the operating system to open a link normally. An app can instead force a specific browser, use an embedded web view, or expose its own preference. Work and school management policies can also lock that preference.
Outlook mobile example
Microsoft documents a specific control in Outlook mobile. Open Settings > Open Links With, then choose between Edge and the system default. Selecting the system default makes Outlook defer to the browser chosen in iOS or Android. Selecting Edge makes Outlook use Edge even when another browser is the device default.
If the choice is unavailable or keeps reverting, a work or school administrator may manage it. In a managed account, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly changing the phone’s browser setting; a policy can overwrite the local choice.
A general app-by-app checklist
- Test the same link from a different app. If it opens correctly elsewhere, the operating-system default is probably working.
- Open the problem app’s settings and search for links, browser, open externally or in-app browser.
- Disable an in-app browser or choose system default when the app offers that option.
- Check whether the account is managed by an employer or school.
- Update the app and restart it before testing again.
Diagnose links that still open in the wrong browser
Identify the scope of the problem
Determine whether every link is affected or only links from one app, one document type or one service. A system-wide failure points to the default-browser setting. A single-app failure points to that app’s preference or policy. A single protocol or file type points to an association that needs individual repair.
Best Value
Verify the browser is installed and selectable
Open the operating-system default-app screen and confirm that the browser appears as an available choice. If it is absent, reinstall or update it, then reopen the settings screen. On iPhone, absence from Browser App can mean the browser does not support Apple’s default-app feature.
Review associations instead of resetting everything
On Windows, inspect the individual link-type and file-type entries. Correcting only the HTTP, HTTPS or affected association preserves other intentional defaults. On Android, inspect the affected app’s supported-link setting. On macOS and iPhone, look for an app-specific link preference when the system setting works elsewhere.
Retest after updates
Menu names and default-app behavior can change with operating-system and app updates. After changing a setting, close and reopen the app that launches links, then test a fresh link. If a managed account restores the old behavior, the administrator’s policy takes precedence over the local setting.
Platform paths at a glance
| Platform | Primary path | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11/10 | Settings > Apps > Default apps | Review individual link-type or file-type associations when one kind of link differs. |
| macOS Ventura 13 or later | Apple menu > System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Default web browser | Older macOS uses System Preferences > General > Default web browser. |
| iPhone | Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App | The browser must support Apple’s default-app feature; apps may still use an in-app viewer. |
| Android | Settings > default apps > Browser app | Labels and exact locations vary by manufacturer and Android version. |
| Outlook mobile | Outlook Settings > Open Links With | Choose Edge or system default; an administrator may control the choice. |
What to expect after the change
- New ordinary web links should open in the selected browser when the originating app defers to system settings.
- Existing browser windows, pinned tabs and saved sessions remain in their original browsers.
- Changing the default does not transfer bookmarks, passwords, extensions or browsing history.
- An app-specific setting can still route links to another browser or an embedded viewer.
- Windows may require separate choices for particular protocols or file types.
Set the operating-system default first, then adjust the individual app only when it has a documented link-opening control. That two-level approach explains most cases in which links continue opening in a different browser.
