How Archaeologists Verify LiDAR Discoveries on the Ground

A LiDAR anomaly is a candidate, not a confirmed site. See how field inspection, mapping, context and targeted testing help archaeologists verify what the terrain model shows.

Archaeologists treat a LiDAR anomaly as a candidate, not a confirmed site. LiDAR records surface heights and can reveal subtle banks, ditches and other landforms, but it does not automatically establish their age, purpose or archaeological origin. Verification may involve checking the feature on the ground, comparing it with other evidence and, when the research question requires it, carefully designed subsurface investigation.

What a LiDAR discovery shows—and what it cannot

Airborne LiDAR instruments send laser pulses toward the landscape and record returns from surfaces. Processing those measurements can produce detailed terrain models; filtering and visualizing the data can make small changes in ground relief easier to recognize. Historic England explains how this can help archaeologists identify and record features that are otherwise difficult to detect, including earthworks beneath woodland vegetation. Its examples include an Iron Age enclosure in Savernake Forest revealed in filtered LiDAR views and a slight earthwork at Newton Kyme associated with a Roman fort. These examples show what interpretation can uncover, not that similar-looking features everywhere share the same date or function. Historic England’s LiDAR overview was updated on 22 May 2024.

LiDAR depicts landforms; archaeologists interpret them. A raised line might be an earthwork bank, but a similar shape could have a geological, agricultural or modern explanation. A ditch-like hollow or rectangular enclosure is a clue to investigate, not a date stamp or cultural attribution. Historic England’s airborne survey guidance explicitly includes distinguishing archaeological from non-archaeological features. Its guide to using airborne LiDAR in archaeological survey was published on 25 July 2018.

That distinction matters because “verified” can mean different things. A walkover may establish that a mapped bank is visible as an earthwork. It may not establish when it was built, who built it, what it was used for, or how far buried remains extend. Each conclusion needs evidence suited to that question.

How archaeologists move from anomaly to interpretation

1. Interpret the remote-sensing evidence

Researchers first describe the physical pattern suggested by the terrain model: for example, a bank, ditch, platform, hollow way or enclosure. They assess its shape and setting and consider alternative explanations, including modern disturbance, farming and natural landforms. The model, its visualizations and the assumptions used to interpret them matter: an apparent feature should be considered in relation to the data and landscape, not isolated from them.

Existing site records, historic maps, aerial photographs and other remote-sensing evidence can help put the candidate in context. Agreement between independent evidence may make an interpretation more persuasive; conflicting evidence is a reason to investigate and record the disagreement, not to conceal it.

2. Set a question before choosing fieldwork

A field visit should have a defined purpose. The team might need to establish whether the relief exists on the ground, record its condition and outline, check whether it continues beyond the mapped boundary, look for associated surface evidence, or determine whether subsurface testing is needed. These are different questions and can call for different methods. A surface inspection is not automatically a reason to excavate.

The 2019 study of Nan Madol, a World Heritage site in Pohnpei, provides a practical example of target selection. The research team chose six priority areas for field verification and LiDAR measurement validation. It favored particularly clear and representative features and locations with lighter vegetation. The authors note that GNSS measurements are most precise when equipment has a relatively unobstructed view of the sky, so vegetation affected where measurements could be made effectively. The team also consulted Pohnpei State Historic Preservation Office personnel and Temwen Island landowners about archaeological feature locations. The case illustrates how research priorities, field conditions, measurement limits and local knowledge can shape a visit; it is not a universal protocol. The Nan Madol study was published in 2019.

3. Walk the area and record what is visible

A systematic walkover—also described as surface inspection, reconnaissance or above-ground survey—allows archaeologists to examine visible relief and record its position, form, condition and relationship to the surrounding landscape. The U.S. National Park Service describes systematic walking as a way to record surface information and identifies archival research and remote sensing as complementary approaches for locating and understanding sites. Its public explainer, last updated 9 May 2023, describes U.S. practice in general terms; on NPS land, archaeological study is restricted to NPS employees or permitted individuals. Read the National Park Service’s overview of how archaeologists find sites.

Where a comparison with the LiDAR model requires precise positions or elevations, field teams can use appropriate survey equipment and document the method and conditions. A phone location or a single GNSS reading should not be mistaken for survey-grade confirmation. Canopy, terrain and other field conditions affect whether a measurement is suitable for the question, as the Nan Madol case demonstrates.

4. Decide whether more evidence is needed

If the question is simply whether a visible earthwork exists, a carefully documented walkover may be enough. If the question concerns chronology, cultural attribution or buried extent, surface observation alone may not answer it. The National Park Service notes that some ground disturbance may be necessary to confirm archaeologists’ suspicions and describes sampling as systematic investigation of part of an area, designed in light of existing knowledge, mathematical probability, or both. The appropriate design depends on the research question and context.

Depending on the circumstances, researchers may consider minimally disturbing approaches, including coring, shovel tests or geophysical survey, or may decide that excavation is justified. These are not mandatory rungs on a fixed ladder: access, permits, conservation impact, local standards and the question being asked affect the choice. The sources cited here do not establish a universal sample size, accuracy threshold or single test that confirms every LiDAR candidate.

Which field method answers which question?

The useful comparison is not “which method is best?” but “what uncertainty needs to be reduced, and what is the least disruptive suitable way to do it?” The approaches below can be combined; their role depends on the site and research aim.

Approach Can help establish Does not establish by itself Important considerations
Systematic walkover Whether a candidate landform is visible at the surface; its observed form, condition and setting. Its date, function or full buried extent. Visibility, vegetation, terrain, access and a consistent recording method affect what can be observed. The National Park Service describes walkover as systematic surface inspection.
Mapped field measurement The position or elevation of observed features for comparison with a terrain model. Archaeological origin or chronology without supporting interpretation and evidence. Choose equipment and method for the required precision. GNSS performance can be constrained by vegetation and sky visibility, as reported in the 2019 Nan Madol study.
Archival and other remote-sensing comparison Context, possible landscape history and whether separate evidence supports or challenges the candidate interpretation. Direct confirmation of a buried feature solely from agreement between images or records. Record discrepancies as well as agreement; Historic England and the National Park Service describe these sources as part of archaeological investigation.
Sampling or other subsurface investigation Evidence bearing on a specific question about buried remains, scope or interpretation. A universal answer if the sample is not suited to the question or wider site. Design sampling systematically and consider permissions, disturbance and conservation. The National Park Service notes that some ground disturbance may be needed to confirm suspicions.

How to document a result without overstating it

A useful record makes it possible for another archaeologist to understand how the interpretation was reached and what remains uncertain. Keep direct observation separate from the explanation attached to it. “A low bank is visible in the field” is an observation; “the bank is a Roman defensive rampart” is an interpretation that requires additional support.

For each candidate, record the mapped location and geometry, the field observations, the survey method and conditions, relevant photographs or measurements, alternative explanations considered, any tests undertaken and the conclusion with its uncertainty. Note limitations that could have affected observation or measurement. If a mapped boundary is uncertain or field evidence conflicts with the model, show that in the record rather than drawing a more definite line than the evidence supports.

In England, Historic England’s Standards and Guidance for Aerial Investigation and Mapping Projects, published 30 June 2026, calls for an integrated, systematic approach combining interpretation, mapping and monument recording in GIS. It also seeks compatible outputs for Historic Environment Records and national datasets. That standard applies to Historic England’s Aerial Investigation and Mapping project context in England; it should not be presented as a universal rule for archaeological work in every country.

Standards and guidance also have different scopes. The European Archaeological Council’s Guidelines for the Use of Airborne Laser Scanning (LiDAR) in Archaeology, version 1, was published in 2025 as a collaborative reference rather than a binding rule for every country. More than 100 individuals and organisations from 30 countries responded to its 2022 baseline survey, and 49 co-authors worked on the guidance. Those figures describe how the guidance was developed; they are not findings about LiDAR accuracy or discovery rates.

What examples can—and cannot—tell us

Subtle earthworks may survive where records suggested they did not

Historic England reports that LiDAR imagery along the River Wharfe revealed evidence for the earthwork survival of a Roman fort previously thought to have been completely levelled by ploughing. This shows how terrain data can prompt a reassessment of a landscape. It does not mean every subtle raised feature is Roman or that the image alone settles its interpretation. Historic England’s overview gives this example alongside other uses of LiDAR.

Canopy gaps can reveal features, but forests are not transparent

Filtered LiDAR visualizations revealed an Iron Age enclosure beneath vegetation at Savernake Forest. Laser returns can provide information about ground surfaces where pulses reach them through gaps in vegetation, but a forest canopy is not uniformly penetrated. What can be identified depends on the data and conditions; a missing or unclear feature in a terrain model is not proof that nothing is present.

Discovery totals need the right attribution

Historic England reports that more than 14,000 previously unknown sites were added to the historic environment record through its aerial survey projects between 2011 and 2014. That total concerns aerial survey work using National Mapping Programme standards—not LiDAR alone—so it should not be read as a LiDAR discovery count. Historic England’s account of aerial investigation describes that broader work.

Responsible fieldwork and the limits of “ground truth”

Field verification is not permission to dig, collect objects or publish sensitive site coordinates. Access land lawfully, follow local heritage laws and permit requirements, and use the relevant heritage authority’s protocols. The degree of investigation should be proportionate to the question and the potential impact on the resource.

In practice, a strong conclusion is specific about what was verified. It might say that field inspection confirmed a visible earthwork matching the mapped candidate, while its date and purpose remain undetermined. If sampling provides evidence for a chronology or buried continuation, explain what was sampled and how far that evidence can reasonably be generalized. Detection, observation, testing and interpretation are connected steps, but they are not interchangeable claims.

The central discipline is to preserve that distinction in both fieldwork and reporting. LiDAR can reveal a candidate that merits attention; on-the-ground observation tests whether the landform is there, and additional evidence addresses the questions the surface cannot answer. There is no single technique or universal threshold that turns every anomaly into a confirmed archaeological site.
