In iPadOS 26, Windowed Apps, Stage Manager and Full Screen Apps use different controls, so a gesture that fits one mode may not behave the same way in another.
Check which multitasking mode your iPad is using
Open Settings > Multitasking & Gestures and note the selected mode before trying a gesture. Apple describes Windowed Apps, Stage Manager and Full Screen Apps as separate choices in iPadOS 26. Switch between open windows in Windowed Apps
Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and pause in the center. When the open windows appear, lift your finger and tap the one you want. This is different from simply swiping up and immediately continuing into the Home Screen.

Move, resize and place windows side by side
Resize or reposition a window
Drag a window corner—or the resize handle at its lower-right corner—to change its size. To move it, drag its top edge. Use the visible window controls and handles rather than relying on gestures from a different multitasking mode.
Put two apps side by side
Drag a second app from the Dock, App Library or Spotlight to the left or right edge of the screen. When both apps are open, adjust the divider between them to give either app more space. Apple’s iPadOS 26 multitasking guide

Switch apps and group windows in Stage Manager
Stage Manager has its own cues. Tap an app or app group in the recent-items list on the left, or tap an app in the Dock. Apple also documents switching with a swipe up followed by a pause, a horizontal swipe along the bottom edge, or a horizontal four- or five-finger swipe.
To group apps, drag a window from the recent-items list or an app icon from the Dock into the center of the screen. The group lets you work with those apps together. Apple’s iPadOS 26 Stage Manager guide

If Windowed Apps isn’t available
Windowed Apps depends on the iPad model. Apple’s support list includes iPad (8th generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later), and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later), along with specific newer devices. Check Apple’s current compatibility list for your exact model rather than assuming a missing control means a gesture changed. Apple’s Windowed Apps compatibility and support information

Apple describes AssistiveTouch as an alternative set of screen gestures for people who may have difficulty touching the screen or pressing device buttons. Its accessibility guidance does not establish a ready-made AssistiveTouch mapping for every multitasking action, so don’t assume a custom gesture will open a particular switcher or arrange windows without confirming that it does on your iPad.
