To make an interactive video, start with a clip, decide what the viewer should do, and add timed interactions such as a hotspot, link, explanatory text, or quiz. If a choice should change what the viewer sees next, build a branching scenario instead of layering interactions onto one linear timeline.
Choose the interaction your video needs
Begin by writing down what you want the viewer to understand or do. Match the interaction to that outcome rather than adding features simply because an editor offers them.

- Reveal more detail: Add a hotspot or overlay that opens explanatory text, an image, or other supporting media.
- Send viewers somewhere: Add a link or call to action at the moment it becomes relevant.
- Check understanding: Place a quiz question in the video or after a section.
- Let viewers choose what happens next: Create a branching scenario in which a choice determines the next scene or lesson segment.
H5P describes its Interactive Video content type as a way to add images, explanatory text, links, and quizzes to a clip. Plan the viewing path before editing
For a linear interactive video
Sketch a timeline. For each interaction, note when it appears, what the viewer sees, what action is available, and what happens after that action. Place an interaction where it helps the viewer make sense of the material or take a useful next step.

For a branching video
Draw a tree before building it. For every choice, specify the resulting video segment and where that path eventually ends or rejoins another path. Check that each branch has a clear purpose and that viewers can understand the choice in front of them.

Build the interactions
- Prepare the clip. Choose the video that supports the viewer’s task and identify the moments where an interaction will help.
- Create the interaction in your selected editor. In H5P, select Interactive Video for timed additions to a clip, or Branching Scenario when choices determine what comes next. In Vimeo, use New Interactive if your account and plan provide access to the feature you need.
- Add each item at its useful moment. Use concise labels and instructions. Provide the explanatory media or destination link promised by the label, and make the viewer’s next action clear.
- For quizzes, settle the reporting need. Decide whether an in-video response is sufficient or whether results must be tracked in an LMS. Vimeo says full quiz-result visibility depends on an LMS that integrates with its supported standards; SCORM integration and LMS tracking require learner seats.
- Preview and revise. Check the timing, readability, link destinations, and transition after each interaction. For branching content, review every path, not just the first one.
Test before publishing
- Watch the intended start-to-finish route and confirm that each timed element appears when it is useful.
- Try every answer and branch; verify that each leads to the intended segment or ending.
- Check the experience in the actual destination: the intended embed, publishing system, or learning environment.
- Confirm that any reporting data required by the project is available in the chosen setup.
- Test on the devices and screen sizes your audience is expected to use. The cited documentation does not establish universal cross-device behavior, so verify your own finished viewing path.
Common choices that cause problems
- A quiz where viewers need a decision path: A quiz checks responses; it does not by itself create a choice-driven sequence. Use a branching scenario when the next content should depend on the viewer’s choice.
- Branching without a map: Unplanned branches can lead to missing segments or confusing endings. Sketch and review the full tree before publishing.
- Choosing a tool before checking access: Vimeo’s cited New Interactive and quiz features have Enterprise and tool-enablement requirements. Verify access before building around them.
- Expecting quiz results without the right LMS setup: Confirm the supported standards and learner-seat requirements if SCORM integration, LMS tracking, or full results visibility matter.
- Adding interactions without testing the real destination: Previewing only inside an editor will not establish how your audience’s embed or learning environment behaves. Test the intended route.
