First determine whether the audio is consistently early or late, or whether the mismatch grows during the demo. A measured, stable offset may be corrected with FFmpeg’s input option -itsoffset; growing drift calls for investigating input clocks, timestamps, and output frame handling instead. Without your command, inputs, and a sample, there is no reliable offset value or stream-specific fix to prescribe.

Determine whether the error is fixed or accumulating

Choose an event that is easy to identify in both picture and sound, such as a spoken cue paired with a visible action or a clap. Compare the two at the beginning and again later in the stream. Note which arrives first and whether the gap stays about the same.

  • Roughly constant gap: This is consistent with a fixed timing offset. Measure its direction and duration before adjusting timestamps.
  • Gap that grows or changes: This points to ongoing timing or clock behavior worth investigating. A single fixed offset cannot, by itself, correct a mismatch that keeps changing.

This distinction narrows the investigation; it does not identify the cause of a particular YouTube Live stream.

Inspect how each input is captured and timestamped

Write down the actual FFmpeg inputs and identify how each receives timestamps. In a product demo, video might come from a screen-capture input while audio comes from a separate device. If the sources use different clocks, their timing can diverge even when they start close together.

FFmpeg’s -isync option adjusts the target input’s timestamps by the difference between input start times. FFmpeg says expected results depend on source timestamps deriving from the same clock source; if either input has no start timestamp, -isync makes no synchronization adjustment. See the FFmpeg documentation.

  • Record which input supplies audio and which supplies video, including whether they are separate capture devices.
  • Check the command and FFmpeg output for the input formats and timestamps available to the process.
  • Determine whether the devices’ timing is derived from a shared clock. Do not assume that matching start times mean their clocks remain aligned.

Correct a measured, stable offset with -itsoffset

FFmpeg documents -itsoffset as an input option: it adds the specified offset to the timestamps of the input file, and a positive offset delays that input’s streams. Place it with the input whose timing you intend to adjust. The option changes timestamps; it does not establish that the input’s underlying clock or timestamp source is correct. See the FFmpeg documentation.

  1. Use the known audiovisual event to establish whether sound is early or late and measure the gap.
  2. Decide which input needs to be delayed to bring its event into alignment. A positive offset delays the input to which it applies.
  3. Put -itsoffset immediately before that input’s -i option, using the measured duration rather than a guessed value. For example, the option belongs in the form -itsoffset <measured-offset> -i <input>; this is a placement illustration, not a ready-to-run command.
  4. Repeat the same event check near the start and later in the demo, then verify the actual live output. If the gap changes over time, return to the clock and timestamp investigation rather than increasing a fixed offset blindly.

The correct input, sign, and value depend on your command and measured result. The available information does not establish those details for this demo.

Check frame synchronization and output timestamps

Video frame-sync behavior affects whether frames are passed through, duplicated, or dropped. FFmpeg documents the modes passthrough, cfr, vfr, and auto. In cfr mode, frames may be duplicated or dropped to reach the requested constant frame rate. In vfr mode, frames pass with their timestamps or may be dropped to prevent duplicate timestamps. FFmpeg also notes that the muxer may further modify timestamps. These behaviors are described in the FFmpeg documentation.

It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Inspect the output sync mode and requested frame rate when diagnosing a changing mismatch. These modes govern output frame handling; they are not interchangeable universal fixes for incorrect input timestamps. Changing one without checking the source timing can alter frame behavior without resolving the underlying audio/video problem.

Use FFplay to observe synchronization drift

FFplay statistics can help show audio/video synchronization drift while you reproduce the problem. FFplay documents audio, video, and external master clocks; it describes master-clock selection as mainly useful for debugging. Use the FFplay documentation to identify the relevant statistics and options for your installed version.

Treat local diagnostic playback as evidence about the reproduction, not proof of what viewers receive. Compare it with a known event in the actual live output: FFplay’s playback path and the live stream are not the same observation.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe What to check next What the evidence supports
The gap is similar at the beginning and later Confirm which event arrives first and measure the gap; inspect input order and where an input offset is applied. A fixed offset may be relevant. The required direction and amount must be measured.
The gap grows during the demo Inspect how the audio and video inputs are timestamped, whether separate devices share a clock, and the output frame-sync mode. This is consistent with ongoing timing or clock behavior; a fixed offset alone is not established as a remedy.
-isync appears to have no effect Check whether both inputs have start timestamps and whether their source timestamps derive from the same clock. FFmpeg states that it makes no adjustment if either input lacks a start timestamp and calls for a shared clock source for expected results.
Local playback looks aligned but the live stream does not Recheck a known event in the viewer-facing live output and compare it with the FFplay observation. Local diagnostic playback alone does not establish synchronization in the live output.
The mismatch changes after altering frame-sync settings Review the selected sync mode, requested frame rate, and muxer timestamp handling. Frame handling or muxer changes may affect output timing; they do not identify or necessarily fix the input cause.

What is needed to diagnose this particular stream

The title identifies YouTube Live, but that alone does not establish a YouTube-specific cause or setting. The command line, FFmpeg build and version, input devices, observed direction and size of the mismatch, and whether it accumulates are not available here. Those details are needed before a stream-specific command or exact offset can be recommended. The cited FFmpeg documentation describes the options and behaviors above; it does not establish how a particular YouTube ingest handled this stream.

A public troubleshooting post describes a related symptom as, “I am having serious audio and video synchronization problems with ffmpeg when trying to either record or stream live screen capture and audio capture.” That is one user’s report, not evidence of the cause of your stream: the r/ffmpeg post.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your demo is a prerecorded video rather than a camera-based presentation, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service that loops uploaded videos; it does not repair audio/video sync problems in an FFmpeg setup or stream a live camera. Its three steps are: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
