Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can usually reduce a horror game’s intensity without abandoning it: read its content warnings, identify the trigger, then use the accessibility, audio and subtitle controls that address that trigger. Lower music or effects independently, preserve dialogue where possible, enable captions with their coverage limits in mind, and look for a phobia mode, reduced-content option or bypass control. Settings and menu names differ by game and version, so change one option at a time and judge the result for yourself.
Start by identifying what is making the game frightening
“Scary” is not one setting. A game can become overwhelming because of sudden sound, sustained music, a particular creature, gore, a visual effect, an unavoidable cutscene or the anticipation of an encounter. The most useful adjustment is the one aimed at the source of discomfort rather than a blanket change that makes every part of the game quieter or less informative.

Before starting, read the game’s content warnings and check its current official accessibility or support information. Warnings can reveal whether the game contains the trigger you want to avoid and may point to a setting that is not obvious from the main options screen. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 123 recommends warnings and customization that lessen or remove potentially harmful content; it also discusses bypassing content where applicable.

Find the relevant menus
Open Options or Settings and inspect three areas: Accessibility, Audio and Subtitles/Closed Captions. Some games place all of these on one screen; others separate them. Labels and availability can change between platforms and versions.
For example, Capcom’s PlayStation 5 web manual for Resident Evil 4 places configurable accessibility options under Options > Accessibility. That is a useful example of where to look, not a universal path. If you do not see an Accessibility tab, check Audio, Gameplay, Language or Subtitles, then consult the manual for your platform.
- Pause at the title screen or once you can safely pause in-game.
- Open Options or Settings and record the current audio values mentally or with a screenshot.
- Check Accessibility for content, visual, camera, subtitle and bypass features.
- Check Audio for separate sliders or mute switches.
- Check Subtitles or Closed Captions for text, speaker labels and sound descriptions.
- Apply one change, return to play and test the next intense section. Keeping changes isolated makes it clear which control helped.
Use separate audio controls instead of muting everything
Sound helps create atmosphere and immersion, so reducing it changes the presentation of the game. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 105 recommends controls that let players “adjust the volume of the audio, or mute different types of audio, independently from each other.” That is a design recommendation, not a promise that every title implements it.

What to lower first
If loud stingers, footsteps, creature noises or environmental effects are the problem, lower Effects while leaving Dialogue higher. If the continuous score creates tension, reduce Music. If both are uncomfortable, lower both gradually rather than immediately setting every category to zero.
A practical sequence is:
- Leave dialogue at a level you can understand.
- Reduce effects modestly and test a section known to contain sudden sounds.
- If tension remains high, reduce music separately.
- Adjust cinematic volume if cutscenes are substantially louder than gameplay.
- Recheck the balance after a few minutes; a very low effects setting may hide useful movement or interaction cues.
The exact categories differ. Bethesda’s Redfall accessibility guide lists adjustable music, effects, dialogue and cinematics volume. In the configuration described by that guide, there are no separate controls for voice chat, screen narration or speech-to-text. Treat that page as a game-specific snapshot rather than evidence that every edition has the same controls.
Preserve information you still need
Lowering effects can remove more than scares. It may also reduce an audio cue that signals an enemy, an interaction or a change in danger. Lowering music is often less likely to affect those cues, but the result depends on the game’s mix. Keep dialogue intelligible if story instructions matter, and test whether important gameplay sounds remain audible before committing to a very low value.
If a game offers only one master-volume slider, use it with caution. Turning down the master level may reduce the frightening sound while also making speech and useful cues harder to hear. In that situation, captions can help with dialogue and some sound information, but they cannot guarantee a complete replacement for audio.

Turn on captions, while checking what they actually cover
Captions can let you follow dialogue after reducing volume and may identify selected sounds. They are not automatically a transcript of every audible event. Bethesda’s Redfall guide explicitly says its closed captions show only a subset of sounds. The specific game should tell you whether captions include effects, ambience, music descriptions, speaker names or only spoken dialogue.
Configure captions for readability
- Enable subtitles or closed captions from the language or accessibility menu.
- Choose speaker labels or sound descriptions if the game provides them.
- Increase text size or contrast if reading quickly is difficult.
- Test captions during both dialogue and a sound-heavy encounter.
- Do not assume a missing caption means that no sound occurred; coverage may simply be limited.
Captions are most useful when you have deliberately lowered audio but still want narrative information. They do not make every visual trigger less intense, and they may not identify the exact cue that warns you about an approaching threat.
Look for a targeted phobia or content mode
Some games alter a specific trigger instead of applying a global reduction. Read the mode’s description carefully: a setting may change appearance and sound while leaving the creature, encounter or difficulty intact.
Hogwarts Legacy: Arachnophobia Mode
Portkey Games says Hogwarts Legacy’s arachnophobia option changes enemy spider appearances. It reduces or removes spider skitters and screeches, removes small spider ground-effect spawners and hides static spider corpses. The Field Guide’s spider images remain unchanged. Therefore, the mode reduces several in-world visual and audio triggers but does not erase every spider image from the game.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Grounded: Arachnophobia Safe Mode
Microsoft’s Grounded example changes the visual presentation of spiders. Microsoft also states that the mode does not remove spiders and does not change gameplay or difficulty. It is an illustration of targeted customization, not evidence that a safe mode in another title will work the same way.
When evaluating a mode, ask four questions:
- Target: Does it address sound, a visual trigger, gore or a particular segment?
- Scope: Does it reduce, alter, remove or bypass the content?
- Information preserved: Are dialogue, captions and gameplay cues still available?
- Timing: Is it a global switch, a pre-game choice, or something you can change at a warning or during a scene?
Use skip and bypass controls when the problem is a specific segment
A global audio change is a poor solution when only one cutscene, mission or encounter causes distress. Check the accessibility menu and the content warning for a way to skip, bypass or reduce that segment. Microsoft’s Guideline 123 recommends allowing players to bypass harmful content when applicable, including after a mission or cutscene has already started.
Availability and timing are game-specific. Some controls must be enabled before a mission; others appear in a pause menu or at a warning screen. If the game offers a bypass, read what it changes: it may advance the story while still recording the mission, or it may omit optional content. Do not infer that a “skip” option removes every related appearance elsewhere.

Use a careful test loop
Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to tell what helped. A short, repeatable test loop gives you more control:
- Choose a safe checkpoint. Save or pause before a section that normally causes a reaction, if the game allows it.
- Change one variable. For example, lower effects while leaving music and dialogue untouched.
- Test the same moment. Compare the next stinger, encounter or conversation rather than relying on memory.
- Check information loss. Confirm that you can still hear instructions, detect interactions and understand dialogue, or that captions provide what you need.
- Keep, reverse or combine. Restore the prior value if the trade-off is worse; otherwise add one more targeted change.
Use this loop after a patch or platform change too. Updates can reset preferences, rename controls or alter a sound mix. A screenshot of your preferred values is more reliable than assuming a profile retained them.
Avoid common setting mistakes
- Assuming “safe” means “removed.” Grounded’s safe mode leaves spiders in the game, and Hogwarts Legacy’s mode leaves Field Guide images unchanged.
- Muting effects without checking cues. You may lose sounds that communicate danger or an interaction.
- Treating captions as complete. Redfall’s documentation says only a subset of sounds is captioned.
- Following a menu path from another platform. Resident Evil 4’s Accessibility tab location is specific to the cited PS5 manual context.
- Expecting one global switch to solve a single scene. A bypass or skip is more precise when one segment is the trigger.
- Reading a feature list as a guarantee. Availability, timing and behavior can vary by edition and version, so read the description shown in your copy.
A decision path when the game is still too intense
If sudden noises are the main problem
Lower effects first, then test a known encounter. If dialogue becomes difficult, raise dialogue independently or enable captions. If effects and music are combined under one slider, lower the master volume only enough to make the sound tolerable and use captions for information the game exposes in text.
If the score creates a constant sense of threat
Reduce music while leaving effects and dialogue higher. This preserves more gameplay information than muting the entire mix, although some games use music to signal a state change. Test a transition between exploration and combat before deciding that the setting is safe to leave low.
If one creature or image is the trigger
Search Accessibility for the creature’s name, an arachnophobia mode, reduced gore, reduced motion or a comparable content filter. Read the description for exclusions such as menus, collectibles, corpses or difficulty. A targeted mode may alter presentation without removing encounters.
If one mission or cutscene is the trigger
Look for a skip or bypass at the warning screen, in the pause menu and in the mission settings. Check whether the option can be activated after the segment begins. If there is no documented bypass, do not assume that lowering audio will remove the visual or narrative trigger.
If the game remains uncomfortable after every adjustment
Stop and reassess rather than forcing continued exposure. The cited guidance establishes customization options, not a guaranteed reduction in fear and not a replacement for your own judgment about what is tolerable. You can return later with a different combination of audio, caption and content settings.

Build a repeatable comfort setup
Once you find settings that work, write them down or capture a screenshot. New saves, patches, platform changes and profile switches can restore defaults. Before a new session, verify four items:
- Your preferred effects and music levels are still applied.
- Dialogue remains understandable at the chosen volume.
- Captions are enabled and displayed at a readable size.
- The relevant phobia, content or bypass mode is still active.
Revisit the game’s official support page if a menu does not match the documentation you first read. A title can add, rename or move settings between editions. The safest approach is always to trust the current description shown by the game or its official manual, then test the result in play.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a horror game less scary just by turning the volume down?
Sometimes, but a master-volume change also lowers dialogue and gameplay cues. Separate music, effects, dialogue and cinematic controls are more precise when available. If they are not, use captions where offered and test whether important information remains accessible.
Should I lower music or effects first?
Choose the category that matches the trigger. Lower effects for stingers, creature noises or loud footsteps; lower music for a continuous sense of tension. There is no universal level, so make a modest change and compare the same section.
Do captions describe every scary sound?
No. Coverage is game-specific. Bethesda’s Redfall guide says its closed captions show only a subset of sounds, so captions may cover dialogue and selected effects without identifying every ambience cue or scare.
Does an arachnophobia mode remove spiders?
Not necessarily. In Grounded, Microsoft says the mode changes spiders’ visual presentation but does not remove spiders or alter gameplay and difficulty. Hogwarts Legacy changes several spider visuals and sounds, while spider images in its Field Guide remain.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I skip a frightening cutscene after it starts?
Only if that title supports it. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance recommends bypassing harmful content when applicable, including after a mission or cutscene has begun, but implementation and timing vary. Check the in-game warning, pause menu and official documentation.
Best Value
Are headphones or another device required?
No. The documented approach relies on in-game accessibility, audio and caption controls. External speakers, headphones and other products are optional and can change the sound in ways that are helpful or unhelpful for an individual player.
The practical takeaway
Make the smallest targeted change that addresses your trigger. Separate audio controls are preferable because they let you reduce music or effects without automatically sacrificing dialogue. Captions can preserve some information but may omit sound effects. Phobia modes can substantially change a presentation while leaving encounters, images or difficulty intact. Skip and bypass options are the most direct answer when a particular scene is the problem. None of these features has a universal effect, so use the game’s documented scope, test one setting at a time and keep only the combination that makes continuing comfortable.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first setting to check in a scary game?
Read the content warnings, then inspect Accessibility, Audio and Subtitles or Closed Captions. Match the setting to the specific trigger instead of changing everything at once.

It can. Effects may include enemy, interaction or danger cues. Test a known encounter and preserve dialogue or captions so you do not lose information you still need.
Are accessibility settings the same on every platform?
No. Menu names, locations and features can vary by platform, edition and version. Use the current in-game description or the manual for your copy.

The documented methods are built-in game settings; no additional product or purchase is required.
The Bottom Line
Identify the exact source of discomfort, adjust one built-in control at a time, and verify what remains visible, audible and playable. Separate audio sliders, captions, targeted content modes and bypass options can make a horror game more manageable, but each has documented limits.
