For a first-time viewer, start with release order. It preserves the surprises and character introductions as audiences originally experienced them. Choose chronological order if you already know the major twists and want the in-universe timeline, or watch only the nine numbered Skywalker Saga films for the shortest complete route. No order is mandatory: StarWars.com says, “Whichever order you choose…is the right one!”
Which Star Wars watch order should you choose?
There are three sensible ways to watch the screen saga. Release order is the best default for newcomers because the original trilogy establishes the mythology before the prequels reinterpret it. Chronological order follows the fictional history from the High Republic era toward the First Order. The Skywalker Saga route removes every series and standalone film and keeps only Episodes I through IX.

| Route | Best for | What you gain | Main complication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release order | First-time viewers and anyone who wants the original reveal sequence | Preserves twists, callbacks and the way the franchise expanded | Story chronology jumps between eras |
| Chronological order | Returning viewers who want the in-universe timeline | Shows the Republic, Empire, Rebellion, New Republic and First Order as a historical progression | Anthology episodes and overlapping series do not fit one perfectly linear line |
| Skywalker Saga only | Viewers who want the nine episodic films and nothing else | A focused, self-contained film narrative | Leaves out context supplied by animated and standalone stories |
Lucasfilm and StarWars.com present both release and chronological approaches rather than declaring one official rule. Pick the route that matches whether you value original reveals, timeline continuity, a short commitment or the broadest context.
Release order: the practical first-watch path
Release order means watching stories in the order audiences first received them. The exact all-title guide changes as new programs arrive, so check the current StarWars.com viewing guide before starting and confirm whether titles listed for 2026 are actually available in your region. The following sequence gives a reliable screen route through the released core films and series without implying that every show is required for the films.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

The original trilogy
- A New Hope (Episode IV)
- The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V)
- Return of the Jedi (Episode VI)
These three films are the foundation of the franchise. They introduce the central conflict, the Jedi and Sith legacy, the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire before later stories add historical detail.
The prequel era and first animated expansion
- The Phantom Menace (Episode I)
- Attack of the Clones (Episode II)
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars theatrical film
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series
- Revenge of the Sith (Episode III)
The Clone Wars film and series expand the conflict between Episodes II and III. The series contains a large number of character arcs, so it is optional for a first pass through the films. If you decide to watch every episode, use Lucasfilm’s dedicated sequential episode order rather than the original broadcast order; that official list rearranges episodes and includes the theatrical movie.
The modern film cycle and first wave of new series
- Star Wars Rebels
- The Force Awakens (Episode VII)
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
- The Last Jedi (Episode VIII)
- Solo: A Star Wars Story
- Star Wars Resistance
- The Mandalorian
- The Rise of Skywalker (Episode IX)
This is a practical release-era progression, not a claim that every series must be inserted between particular films. Rogue One is a standalone mission about stealing the Death Star plans; it enriches the opening of A New Hope but is not required to understand the nine episodes. Solo is another optional standalone story, centered on Han Solo before the original trilogy.

Later series and anthology programs
After the sequel-era films, the released screen slate broadens with The Clone Wars final season, The Bad Batch, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire, Ahsoka and Tales of the Underworld. Watch them in their premiere order if you want to follow how the franchise developed, or move them to the chronological placements below if you prefer story time. The anthology titles are especially flexible because their episodes cover different characters and periods.
The official guide combines films and series and currently displays titles associated with 2026. Treat a displayed future title as an announcement or listing, not proof that it has been released. Availability on Disney+ also varies by country and changes over time, so check your local catalogue.
Chronological order: the in-universe timeline
Chronological viewing starts with the earliest era and moves toward the sequel trilogy. It is most satisfying when you already know the major reveals, because the prequels and later stories assume that viewers understand the original trilogy’s mythology. The order below follows the official guide’s era progression while flagging stories that span or overlap periods.

High Republic and prequel-era stories
- The Acolyte — set before the prequel films in the High Republic period.
- The Phantom Menace (Episode I).
- Attack of the Clones (Episode II).
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars theatrical film and animated series.
- Revenge of the Sith (Episode III).
Tales of the Jedi is an anthology that reaches across more than one point in this broad era. It works better as a spanning collection than as a single event placed at one exact date. The same principle applies to the later Tales of the Empire and Tales of the Underworld.

- The Bad Batch — follows the transition from the Republic to the early Empire.
- Solo: A Star Wars Story.
- Obi-Wan Kenobi.
- Andor and Star Wars Rebels.
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
- A New Hope (Episode IV).
- The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V).
- Return of the Jedi (Episode VI).
Andor and Rebels unfold concurrently and both lead into Rogue One. Do not force one entire series before the other; their timelines intersect. Rogue One is the immediate story lead-in to A New Hope in the official guide, making the two a natural double feature.
New Republic and First Order era
- The Mandalorian.
- The Book of Boba Fett.
- Ahsoka.
- Star Wars Resistance — begins before The Force Awakens and continues beyond it.
- The Force Awakens (Episode VII).
- The Last Jedi (Episode VIII).
- The Rise of Skywalker (Episode IX).
Because Resistance crosses the opening of the sequel trilogy, its episodes cannot be represented accurately by putting the entire series in one slot. Watch it as a parallel story around The Force Awakens and beyond, or postpone it until after the sequel films if you want a simpler film-first path.

The nine-film Skywalker Saga order
If you want only the numbered films, use this chronological sequence. It is the shortest route that still presents the complete nine-film Skywalker family narrative:
- The Phantom Menace (Episode I)
- Attack of the Clones (Episode II)
- Revenge of the Sith (Episode III)
- A New Hope (Episode IV)
- The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V)
- Return of the Jedi (Episode VI)
- The Force Awakens (Episode VII)
- The Last Jedi (Episode VIII)
- The Rise of Skywalker (Episode IX)
Lucasfilm used this chronological nine-film sequence for its Skywalker Saga marathon announcement. Standalone films and series are optional additions, not prerequisites for following these episodes.

How to handle anthology and overlapping stories
Anthology series
Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire and Tales of the Underworld each contain stories from widely separated points in time. Start with them after you know the characters, then watch episodes individually near their relevant era if you enjoy timeline detail. For a first viewing, watching an entire season together is less disruptive than repeatedly jumping backward and forward.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Concurrent series
Andor and Rebels overlap during the rise of the Rebellion. Their shared destination is Rogue One, but neither series completely precedes the other. Resistance similarly crosses the beginning of the sequel-film era. These overlaps are why the official chronological list is best understood as a viewing aid rather than an episode-perfect calendar.
The Clone Wars episode order
The theatrical Clone Wars movie and animated episodes were not originally broadcast in strict story order. Lucasfilm maintains an official sequential list that rearranges episodes and includes the movie. Use that list when you want episode-level chronology; reproducing a shortened order would omit important placement details.
Choosing between the two main orders
- Choose release order when you are new to Star Wars, want the original surprises, or plan to watch with people who do not know the major twists.
- Choose chronological order when you have already seen the films, care about political and historical progression, or want the transition from Republic to Empire to Rebellion to First Order in one direction.
- Choose the nine films when your available time is limited or your group wants the central episodic narrative without animated shows and anthology detours.
- Add standalones selectively when you want more context: place Rogue One immediately before A New Hope, and place Solo in the early Imperial-period section.
For deeper timeline reference, Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Timelines is an optional visual guide covering films, live-action and animated series, books, comics and games. It is a reference companion, not something you need in order to choose a viewing order.
