Vanilla Minecraft has no gun recipe. No crafting grid in the base game produces a firearm, and no in-game command creates one. On Bedrock Edition, you can get gun-like items in two ways: install a weapon add-on made by someone else, or build a custom item and projectile yourself with resource and behavior packs. This guide covers only Bedrock. Java Edition uses a different modding system, and Bedrock add-ons do not run there.
Decide what you want before you start
The phrase “make guns” can mean two different tasks, and they need different amounts of work. Use the table to pick your route.

Recommended Free Tools
| Your goal | Route | What you need | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Add a ready-made weapon to a world | Install an existing add-on from the in-game catalog | Bedrock Edition, a free or paid add-on, and a world you can edit | Low: activate the pack and play |
| Create your own gun-like item | Build a custom item with resource and behavior packs | Basic familiarity with pack folders, JSON manifests, and image files | Medium to high: you write and test the files |
| Make the item fire projectiles | Add projectile behavior with item and entity components | The custom item workflow, plus the Custom Projectiles experimental toggle | High: you combine components and test them |
If you only want a weapon in your game, skip to the add-on section. Building your own item is a development project, not a shortcut.
Option 1: Install an existing weapon add-on
Minecraft’s official creator guidance describes add-ons as packs that can add custom blocks, items, mobs, recipes, and other content. Weapon add-ons work the same way. Minecraft Help’s activation guide describes the steps below for Bedrock. Check the in-game catalog for current listings, because add-on availability and compatibility change over time.
#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Activate an add-on in a new world
- Open Minecraft Bedrock Edition and select Play.
- Select Create New and then Create New World.
- Choose the Marketplace content option, or create a new world, depending on where your add-on is listed.
- Open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs, depending on the pack type.
- Activate the add-on you want, then finish creating the world.
Activate an add-on in an existing world
- Open the world’s edit screen from the Play tab.
- Choose Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Activate the add-on.
- Return to the world and play.
Realm owners can activate add-ons through the Realm steps in the same official Minecraft Help article.
Check a featured weapon add-on before you rely on it
Minecraft’s creator page features Weapons Expansion SCI-FI, which it describes as offering craftable sci-fi weapons. Treat that as an example of official weapon-themed content. It does not confirm that the listing is live in your region, that it works on your device, or that it represents realistic firearms. Confirm those details in the in-game catalog before you buy or install.
Option 2: Build a custom gun-like item
Microsoft Learn’s custom-item tutorial recommends that you already understand resource packs, behavior packs, and add-on development. Plan on learning the file structure before you write your first item.
Rank #2
The custom item workflow
- Create one behavior pack folder and one resource pack folder.
- Create the item’s file structure inside each pack, and write the manifest files that identify each pack.
- Add the item’s graphics to the resource pack.
- Place both packs in the development pack folders that Bedrock reads for this workflow. Follow the tutorial’s folder layout exactly.
- Launch Bedrock Edition.
- Create or open a world and activate both packs.
- Get the item. In Creative mode, or in Survival with cheats enabled, run
/givefollowed by your item’s identifier.
File names and locations matter. A pack that loads with the wrong name or folder structure will not appear as expected, and the item will not show up in your inventory.
Add projectile behavior
A custom item that looks like a gun does nothing special until you tell it to launch something. Microsoft Learn’s custom projectile tutorial covers this with item and entity components:
- The
minecraft:shooteritem component defines the ammunition the item uses. It requiresminecraft:use_modifiers. - The projectile item and the projectile entity each use their own projectile components.
- The tutorial’s examples currently require the Custom Projectiles experimental toggle. Turn it on in the world settings before you test.
These docs provide components and sample implementations. They do not provide a finished firearm. Expect to combine the components, adjust values, and test the result yourself.
Rank #3
Troubleshooting checklist
- The add-on does not appear: confirm the pack is activated in that world, and check that you are editing the correct world.
- The custom item does not appear in your inventory: check that both packs are active, the folder structure and manifests match the tutorial, and the
/giveidentifier matches the item’s name. - The item loads but does not fire: confirm the Custom Projectiles experimental toggle is on, and check that
minecraft:shooteris paired withminecraft:use_modifiers. - The item works in one world but not another: activate the packs in each world separately.
Java Edition
The official Bedrock sources reviewed here do not cover Java Edition modding, so this guide makes no claim about Java loaders, mod versions, or compatibility. Do not follow these steps on Java Edition.
If you are using Java and want a gun-like item, search for Java-specific mod documentation separately, and confirm the mod matches your exact game version.
Minecraft’s Bedrock guidance and Microsoft Learn’s tutorials are the primary sources for everything above. Versions change, so compare the in-game options and tutorial steps with what you see in your own copy of the game before you start.
