Most people do not need a consumer VPN by default. A VPN is worth using when you have a specific reason to send your traffic through another network, such as an employer’s remote-access requirement or a network operator you do not trust. It does not make you anonymous, and it does not replace HTTPS, device updates, or account protection. What it does is move some trust from the network you are on, or from your internet provider, to the VPN company.
What a VPN actually does
A VPN app routes your connection through servers that the provider controls, and it may encrypt the connection between your device and those servers. The Federal Trade Commission describes the app this way in its consumer guidance “In the market for a VPN app?” (2018). The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) puts the core function more simply in its Surveillance Self-Defense guide, reviewed July 28, 2026: “The reality is that VPNs are best suited for one thing: routing your network connection through a different network.”
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That single function explains both its usefulness and its limits. The network you connect to sees less of your traffic, because it is now carrying encrypted data headed to the VPN server. But the VPN server now sees the traffic instead, and the websites you visit still receive your connection from the VPN’s address rather than your own.

The FTC is direct on this point: “A VPN app generally isn’t going to make you entirely anonymous” (consumer guidance, 2018). Websites can still identify you from information you give them, such as the account you log into, and from other tracking signals that are independent of your IP address. EFF makes the same point, noting that VPNs do not fully anonymize users.

If your goal is privacy from advertisers or from sites you use, the more effective levers are usually account settings, what you share at sign-up, and the browser and app permissions you grant, rather than the VPN itself.
Public Wi-Fi: how much a VPN adds
Public Wi-Fi is less risky than it was in the past, largely because most websites now use encryption. The FTC’s consumer article “Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What You Need To Know” (published around 2023) states: “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” Its practical advice is to look for HTTPS in the address bar or a lock indicator before entering sensitive information.
This is general guidance, not a guarantee for every network or every threat. A cafe or airport network with no encryption and an unfamiliar operator is a case where a VPN can reasonably add protection, provided you trust the VPN provider more than the local network. For a routine visit to a news site on a familiar network, a VPN is rarely the decisive safeguard.

Trust moves; it does not disappear
Using a VPN means the provider becomes a party you have to trust. The provider can see the destinations your traffic connects to, and its own practices determine what happens to that information. The FTC’s 2018 checklist recommends researching the app before installing it, checking the permissions it requests, confirming what encryption it uses, and reading its data-sharing policy.
A free VPN deserves particular scrutiny, because the FTC’s guidance is that you should understand how any company makes money from a service you are not paying for in cash. The question to ask is not whether a VPN is good in the abstract, but whether this specific provider has earned your trust for this specific purpose.

Internet providers: what the 2021 FTC figure does and does not show
Internet providers have a visibility advantage of their own. The FTC’s 2021 staff report on internet service provider data collection examined six mobile ISPs that, at that time, represented about 98 percent of the mobile internet market. The report found that these providers collected and shared broad types of customer data.
That figure describes the six companies the study covered, measured as of 2021. It is not a current market-share number, and it should not be read as a finding about every ISP today. It does establish that a provider you pay for can see a great deal of your activity, which is a reasonable input when deciding whether a VPN changes anything for you.
Work VPNs are a different case
If your employer requires a VPN, the decision is not yours to make. CISA and partner agencies, in “Modern Approaches to Secure Network Access” (June 18, 2024), discuss the limits of traditional VPNs for organizations and describe alternative approaches to remote access. That guidance is aimed at organizations and their network resources. It is not a recommendation that every individual subscribe to a VPN for personal use.

The FTC’s small-business guidance “Cybersecurity for small business: Secure remote access” (2019) identifies multifactor authentication as a protective measure for remote access. Follow your organization’s current policy for which VPN or remote-access method to use and how to sign in. Do not install a personal VPN to get around a corporate setup unless your IT team has approved it.
Streaming: do not count on it
Many readers consider a VPN to reach a different country’s streaming catalog. EFF notes that streaming platforms may block VPN connections, so a VPN can fail to unlock content even when it is working correctly. Treat regional access through a VPN as unreliable, and check the streaming service’s own availability rules for your location before paying for a VPN for that purpose.

Which situation fits you
| Situation | Is a VPN a good fit? | What to rely on first |
|---|---|---|
| Your employer requires remote access to company systems | Yes, using the method your organization specifies | Its approved VPN or remote-access tool, and its multifactor sign-in policy |
| Occasional use of public Wi-Fi with no work tie | Optional; useful mainly on networks you do not trust | HTTPS before entering sensitive data, updated devices |
| Wanting websites not to identify you | Not sufficient on its own | Limiting what you disclose at sign-up, account and app privacy settings |
| Watching a streaming catalog from another country | Unreliable; the service may block VPN connections | The streaming service’s own regional availability rules |
| Routing traffic through a network you trust more than the one you are on | Possible fit, if the provider earns your trust | Reviewing the provider’s privacy policy, app permissions, and encryption |
If you decide to use one
When you do need a VPN, evaluate the provider against the points the FTC and EFF guidance supports:
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Its privacy policy and what it says about sharing data with others.
- The permissions the app asks for on your device, and whether they match the service it provides.
- The encryption it describes, and whether it explains that encryption in plain terms.
- How transparent it is about who runs the company and how it is funded.
- Whether it supports the devices and platforms you use.
- Whether it fits the specific routing need that justified the decision in the first place.
The available guidance does not establish which VPN provider is best, what current prices or speeds are, or whether any provider’s claims have been verified by an independent audit. Those questions need to be answered from each provider’s own current disclosures and independent sources, and they are not settled by the general guidance above.
What to do if you do not need a VPN
If none of the situations above applies to you, the practical steps are the ones that protect you whether or not you use a VPN: connect to sites over HTTPS, install operating system and app updates, use a unique password for each account, and turn on multifactor authentication where the service offers it. Those steps address the most common everyday risks more directly than a VPN does.
Revisit the question if your circumstances change, such as starting a job that requires remote access, travelling frequently on unfamiliar networks, or needing to route traffic through a specific location for a legitimate reason.
