In desktop Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security to reach the main privacy controls. Start with third-party cookies and site permissions; then choose a Safe Browsing level that fits your security and data-sharing preferences. These settings can limit some cross-site data use, but they do not make you anonymous.
Where to find Chrome’s privacy controls
In desktop Chrome, select More > Settings > Privacy and security. From there, open Third-party cookies, Security, or Site settings depending on what you want to adjust. Menu names and available controls can vary by device, Chrome version, and language. A work- or school-managed browser may also have settings locked by an administrator.

How to limit third-party cookies
Third-party cookies are created by sites other than the one shown in your address bar, often because a page includes content or services from another site. First-party cookies come from the site you are visiting. Blocking third-party cookies can reduce cross-site data sharing, but sites that rely on them may lose features or behave unexpectedly. Google’s Chrome Help explains cookie controls and their effects.

- Choose the blocking option if you want to restrict third-party cookies.
- If a trusted site stops working, use the available site exception controls for that site rather than allowing third-party cookies everywhere.
Deleting cookies or other site data is a separate action: it can sign you out and remove saved preferences. Use it as a targeted cleanup when needed, not as a consequence-free reset.

Choose a Safe Browsing level
Safe Browsing checks for dangerous websites, downloads, and extensions. Google documents three levels. The trade-off is between the strength and scope of threat checks and how much browsing-related information is sent to Google for those checks. Google’s Safe Browsing documentation describes the options.

To change the setting, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Security, then select the Safe Browsing level you prefer. Enhanced protection is not the most private choice simply because it provides stronger checks; it shares more diagnostic browsing information for security purposes.

Review site permissions
Chrome lets you set general permission defaults and adjust access for an individual site. Go to More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings. Review permissions that can reveal information or enable access, including location, camera, microphone, notifications, and embedded content. Chrome also offers controls for items such as pop-ups, automatic downloads, clipboard access, and local network access. Google’s site-permission help covers the available controls.

- Allow camera, microphone, or location access for a particular site only when you understand why that site needs it.
- Check existing site-specific permissions as well as the general defaults; changing a default does not necessarily revoke an exception you previously granted.
What Do Not Track and Incognito do—and do not do
Do Not Track is only a request
Chrome’s Do Not Track setting sends websites a request not to collect or track browsing data. Google says most websites and services, including Google’s, do not change their behavior in response. Treat it as an optional signal, not as a substitute for cookie controls or permission review. Google explains the Do Not Track setting and its limits.

Incognito limits what is kept on the device
Google describes Incognito as a way to keep browsing private from other people who use the same device. That narrow benefit does not mean websites or network operators cannot see activity. Google’s Chrome privacy overview notes that privacy choices depend on the user; as Google puts it, “privacy is a personal choice and not one size fits all.”
