How to make glass in Minecraft
Glass starts with sand, not a crafting-table recipe. Regular sand and red sand both work as furnace input, and each smelted block produces one glass block.

What you need
- Sand or red sand.
- A furnace.
- Any suitable furnace fuel.
- An empty output slot or inventory space for the finished glass.
Furnace steps
- Mine sand or red sand and collect the amount needed for your build or recipes.
- Open the furnace.
- Place sand or red sand in the upper input slot.
- Place fuel in the lower fuel slot.
- Wait for the smelting operation to finish, then take the glass from the output slot.
The Minecraft Wiki beginner guide lists a 10-second smelting cycle for each item. That means a stack of sand is processed one item at a time in a single furnace; additional furnaces let you run more cycles in parallel. The input can be ordinary sand or red sand, but the output is the same regular glass block.
Why the furnace may appear to do nothing
- Sand is in the wrong slot: it must be in the upper input slot, not the fuel slot.
- No fuel: the furnace will not begin a cycle until the lower slot contains usable fuel.
- Full output or inventory: clear space before collecting the finished glass.
- Expecting a crafting recipe: glass is made by smelting; it is not crafted directly on a crafting table.
Glass blocks versus glass panes
Full glass blocks are useful when you want a solid transparent wall, ceiling, skylight, greenhouse, aquarium boundary or other structural surface. They occupy a complete block space and provide the straightforward clear-glass appearance.

For long windows and thin barriers, panes use material more efficiently. Six glass blocks craft 16 glass panes, a yield Mojang highlights for large window runs. Arrange six glass blocks in the two horizontal rows of a crafting table to receive 16 panes.
Panes are thinner than full blocks and are intended for connected window sections. Mojang’s practical description captures their defensive value: “At the most basic utilitarian level, glass panes allow you to see Creepers lurking outside your front door before you open it.” — Duncan Geere, Minecraft author, official Minecraft article, September 24, 2020.
Choosing the form for a build
| Need | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A solid transparent wall or roof | Glass blocks | They fill a complete block space and keep the construction pattern simple. |
| A long window run using fewer smelted blocks | Glass panes | Six blocks produce 16 panes. |
| A colored window or decorative partition | Stained glass or stained-glass panes | Dye changes the appearance while preserving the transparent-window role. |
| A separate craftable glass variant | Tinted glass | It has its own recipe using an amethyst shard. |
| A beacon with a colored beam | Stained glass or stained-glass panes | Place the colored glass above an active beacon. |
How to make colored glass
Stained glass
Combine glass with a dye to make stained glass. The dye determines the color, so choose the dye that matches the palette of your build. This is a separate product from clear glass; crafting stained glass does not return the original blocks to your inventory.
Stained-glass panes
Use the standard pane arrangement with matching stained-glass blocks to craft stained-glass panes. The result is the colored, thinner window form rather than clear panes.

Using stained glass to color a beacon
An active beacon sends its beam through the space above it. Place stained glass or stained-glass panes above the beacon in that beam path to change the beam’s color. This is the main functional reason to keep colored glass after a decorative project: the same blocks can act as a visual signal for a beacon installation.
Tinted glass
Tinted glass is a distinct craftable variant. Its recipe combines glass with an amethyst shard. Because it is not the same item as stained glass, use the tinted-glass recipe when you specifically need that variant rather than a dye-colored block.

Every major recipe that uses glass
Glass is not limited to windows. The following recipes turn it into containers, signaling equipment and end-game items.
| Item | Glass requirement | Other ingredients | Result and use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glass bottles | 3 glass | None listed | 3 bottles. Bottles support potion and other fluid-related gameplay. |
| Beacon | Glass | 1 nether star and obsidian | 1 beacon. Stained glass placed above an active beacon changes its beam color. |
| Daylight detector | 3 glass | 3 nether quartz and 3 wooden slabs | 1 detector that outputs according to sunlight. |
| End crystal | 7 glass | 1 ghast tear and 1 eye of ender | 1 end crystal. |
Glass bottles
The bottle recipe uses three glass blocks and produces three bottles. Glass is only the container component; what you do with the bottles afterward is a separate part of potion and fluid gameplay.

Beacons
A beacon combines glass with a nether star and obsidian. Once you have the beacon, stained glass or stained-glass panes can be used above it to recolor the beam. Keep the beacon recipe and the beam-coloring step separate: the colored glass is not listed as a replacement for the clear glass used to craft the beacon itself.
Daylight detectors
A daylight detector needs three glass blocks, three nether quartz and three wooden slabs. Mojang describes it as producing an output based on sunlight. It can also be toggled into an inverted night mode, making it useful for redstone systems that should react to daylight or darkness.

End crystals
An end crystal requires seven glass blocks, one ghast tear and one eye of ender. Glass is therefore a substantial part of the recipe, so smelt enough before attempting to craft several crystals.
Hardened glass and edition differences
Hardened glass and hardened stained glass are not universal vanilla recipes. Bedrock and Education references document recipes that use compounds such as aluminum oxide and boron trioxide. These recipes depend on the edition and on whether the relevant Education features or Bedrock content are enabled.

Before planning a laboratory-style build around hardened glass, check the exact edition, version and enabled feature set. A recipe documented for Bedrock/Education should not be assumed to exist in a standard Java world, and a missing compound recipe usually indicates an edition or feature mismatch rather than a furnace problem.

Breaking a placed glass block normally destroys it instead of dropping the block. Silk Touch is required to obtain that glass block back intact. This matters when remodeling a window, moving a skylight or correcting a build: without Silk Touch, plan to smelt replacement sand rather than expecting the old block to return.
Decide whether a structure is temporary before placing expensive or carefully colored glass. If you do not have Silk Touch available, measure the opening and craft or smelt spare blocks first so an accidental break does not stop the project.
A practical glass workflow
- Gather the raw material: mine ordinary sand or red sand near the area where you are preparing supplies.
- Estimate the form: count full blocks for structural surfaces and use the six-block-to-16-pane yield when a thin window run is sufficient.
- Smelt in batches: load the furnace input with sand, add fuel, and allow the 10-second-per-item cycle to complete.
- Reserve blocks for utility recipes: set aside the amounts needed for bottles, a daylight detector, a beacon or end crystals before converting everything into panes.
- Choose a color only after deciding the function: use dye for stained glass or stained panes, amethyst shards for tinted glass, and stained glass above an active beacon when the objective is beam color.
- Place carefully: once glass is part of a finished build, Silk Touch is the recovery requirement for a placed glass block.
Common planning mistakes
Turning all your glass into panes
Panes are efficient for windows, but recipes for bottles, beacons, daylight detectors and end crystals call for glass blocks. Keep the blocks needed for those crafts before making a large pane batch.

Confusing stained and tinted glass
Stained glass uses a dye, while tinted glass uses an amethyst shard. They are separate variants with different recipes, so select the recipe based on the item you actually need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesExpecting a colored beacon from clear glass
Clear glass in the beacon recipe does not color the beam. The color change comes from placing stained glass or stained-glass panes above an active beacon.
Assuming every edition has hardened glass
Hardened-glass recipes are edition- and feature-specific. Verify the world’s edition and enabled content before gathering compounds or designing around the block.
Breaking a window without Silk Touch
A placed glass block normally disappears when broken. Equip a Silk Touch tool first if you need to relocate or reclaim it.
