How to Craft and Use Flint and Steel in Minecraft

To craft flint and steel, combine one flint and one iron ingot in any two slots of a crafting grid. The recipe is shapeless, so the ingredients can be placed in either order. Because it needs only two items, you can make it in the 2×2 grid in your inventory; a 3×3 crafting table is not required.

Flint and steel is Minecraft’s standard reusable ignition tool. It creates fire, activates a valid Nether portal, primes TNT, and lights campfires, candles, and cakes with candles. Its durability is finite, and some interactions differ between Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, and individual game versions.

What you need

  • One flint: commonly obtained from gravel.
  • One iron ingot: obtain an ingot through your normal survival resources.

You do not need sticks, planks, a crafting table, or any other ingredient. The two-item recipe is shapeless, which means the positions and order of the flint and iron do not matter.

How to craft flint and steel

Using your inventory

  1. Open your player inventory.
  2. Put one flint and one iron ingot into any two cells of the 2×2 crafting grid.
  3. Take the flint and steel from the result slot.
  4. Move it to your hotbar so you can select it quickly.

This is the fastest method because the recipe fits in the personal inventory grid. The official Minecraft article describes the same two-ingredient recipe and notes that a separate 3×3 crafting table is unnecessary.

Using a crafting table

  1. Place and open a crafting table.
  2. Put one flint and one iron ingot into any two cells of the 3×3 grid.
  3. Collect the flint and steel from the output slot.
  4. Store it in your inventory or hotbar.

A crafting table works exactly like the inventory grid for this recipe. Use whichever interface is already open.

How to obtain the ingredients

Finding flint

Gravel is the usual source of flint. Keep breaking gravel until you receive flint, then reserve one piece for the recipe. If you are preparing several ignition tools, gather extra flint rather than returning to a gravel patch each time one tool wears out.

Getting an iron ingot

You need the finished ingot, not iron ore or raw iron in the crafting grid. If your current resources are still in ore or raw form, process them using the normal method for your edition and world, then use one resulting ingot in the recipe.

How to use flint and steel

Select the tool and use it on a target

  1. Place flint and steel in your hotbar.
  2. Select the hotbar slot.
  3. Stand close enough to the block, entity, or object you want to ignite.
  4. Use the platform’s normal interact or use control while aiming at the target.

The exact button depends on whether you are playing with a mouse and keyboard, controller, or touchscreen. If the target is valid, the game creates fire or performs that object’s ignition interaction. If nothing happens, check that you are aiming at the correct face, that the area is reachable, and that the target accepts fire in your edition and game mode.

Everyday uses

Creating ordinary fire

Use flint and steel on a suitable solid surface to place a fire block. You can also ignite a location beside a flammable block when you need a fire to start spreading. Fire is not automatically contained: nearby combustible blocks, leaves, and other burnable parts of a build can catch. Clear the area first, especially around wooden houses, forests, storage rooms, and decorative structures.

Fire can also disappear or be extinguished by environmental conditions and player actions. Treat a newly lit fire as an active hazard, not as a permanent light source.

Lighting campfires

Flint and steel can light campfires. Aim at the campfire and use the tool. This is useful when a campfire has gone out or when you are activating one as part of a base or travel setup. Check the surrounding blocks before lighting it if the campfire is near materials that can burn.

Lighting candles and candle cakes

The official Minecraft article states that flint and steel can light campfires, candles, and cakes with candles. For a candle, target the candle itself. For a candle cake, target the cake with its candle. The tool does not replace the candle or cake; it supplies the ignition interaction.

Igniting TNT

Use flint and steel on TNT to prime it. Once primed, TNT follows its normal countdown and explosion behavior, so move away and protect anything you do not intend to destroy.

There is an important control-related exception in the Java and Bedrock reference material: sneaking changes the TNT interaction. While sneaking, the tool places fire on the TNT’s side instead of immediately following the ordinary ignition behavior. If your goal is to prime TNT, use the normal interaction; if your edition supports the sneaking behavior, use it only when you deliberately want a fire block rather than an immediate fuse.

Activating and relighting a Nether portal

Lighting a newly built portal

  1. Build a valid obsidian portal frame according to the rules of your edition.
  2. Stand outside the frame with flint and steel selected.
  3. Aim at an empty interior space inside the frame.
  4. Use the tool to create fire inside the frame.
  5. When the frame is valid, the fire is replaced by Nether portal blocks.

Flint and steel does not turn an incomplete or invalid frame into a portal. If the interior lights but no portal appears, extinguish the fire safely and inspect the frame for missing, misplaced, or unsuitable blocks.

Relighting an extinguished portal

If a portal has gone out, you normally do not need to rebuild the frame. Carry flint and steel to the frame, create fire in the interior, and wait for the portal blocks to appear. A clear approach makes this safer, particularly if the frame is in a wooden base, near foliage, or in a confined room.

Portal relighting checklist

  • Frame: confirm that the obsidian structure is still intact and valid.
  • Interior: aim at an open block inside the frame rather than at an exterior edge.
  • Tool: verify that flint and steel is selected and has remaining durability.
  • Space: remove nearby burnable blocks before creating fire.
  • Result: a valid frame converts the interior fire into portal blocks.

Keep a spare ignition method before entering the Nether. Reference material for Minecraft documents fire charges and other ways to relight a portal, but their availability, handling, and convenience differ from a reusable flint and steel.

Durability, repair, and enchantments

How many uses does it have?

Every successful use consumes durability. The Minecraft Wiki reference lists durability as 64 in Java Edition in the version context shown on that page. Do not treat 64 as a universal figure for every Bedrock release, snapshot, or future update: edition and version mechanics can differ.

A “use” means an ignition interaction that the game accepts. Repeatedly clicking where no valid interaction occurs does not give you a reliable way to count durability, and interface behavior can vary by edition. Plan around the item eventually wearing out rather than assuming it is permanent.

Combining damaged tools

You can refresh durability by combining one damaged flint and steel with another damaged flint and steel in a crafting grid. The result is a repaired tool with combined durability according to the game’s normal repair rules. This consumes both source items, so combine tools when their remaining durability makes the repair worthwhile.

Unbreaking and Mending

Flint and steel can be enchanted with Unbreaking or Mending. Unbreaking reduces how often durability is consumed. Mending can restore durability through the experience-based mechanics of the edition when its conditions are met. Enchantment availability and exact behavior can change with updates, so check the rules for the edition and version you are playing.

Flint and steel versus a fire charge

A fire charge is a useful backup, but it is not a direct substitute for the routine advantages of flint and steel. The practical differences are repeatability, maintenance, carrying spares, and targeting precision.

Criterion Flint and steel Fire charge
Repeat use Reusable until its durability is exhausted Consumed as a one-time ignition item
Crafting and maintenance Made from one flint and one iron ingot; damaged tools can be combined, and the tool supports Unbreaking or Mending Use and replenishment follow the fire-charge recipe and item rules for your edition
Portal backup Standard, controllable tool for lighting or relighting a portal Useful as an alternative when you do not have flint and steel
Targeting Directly targets a nearby block or supported object Used as a launched or projected fire-starting option, so placement can be less precise
Best role Routine base work, controlled ignition, TNT, and portal maintenance Emergency spare or a deliberate alternative when the standard tool is unavailable

For most survival planning, carry flint and steel as the primary ignition tool and keep an alternative fire source in a separate slot before a long Nether trip.

Safety and preparation

Clear combustible surroundings

Fire can spread through nearby flammable blocks. Before lighting anything, inspect the space in every direction, including above and behind the target. A portal beside a wooden shelter can set the shelter alight; a campfire under a low roof can damage nearby construction. Move combustible decoration, leaves, wool, and storage structures away from the ignition point when possible.

Carry a spare

Because durability decreases with use, an expedition can leave you without a working ignition tool at the moment you need to relight a portal. Carry a second flint and steel, or bring a suitable alternative fire source. Keep the spare in your inventory rather than dropping it in a chest that you may not be able to reach.

Separate ignition from valuable builds

Make a dedicated portal pad or fire-safe work area instead of testing the tool against the nearest wall. This reduces accidental fires and makes it easier to relight a portal without damaging the surrounding base.

Common problems and fixes

The recipe does not appear

  • Confirm that you have one flint and one iron ingot, not gravel and iron ore.
  • Place both items in the same crafting grid; the recipe is shapeless, so try different slots if the interface is not updating.
  • Check that you are looking at the output slot and that your inventory has room for the result.

Fire appears, but the portal does not activate

  • Inspect the entire obsidian frame for a structural error.
  • Make sure the fire is inside the frame.
  • Verify that the frame uses the block type and arrangement accepted by your edition.
  • If the frame is valid but the first fire vanished, try lighting another interior space.

Nothing happens when you use the tool

  • Confirm that flint and steel is selected in the hotbar.
  • Aim at a nearby face or supported object rather than empty air.
  • Check whether the target is protected from interaction by a map rule, server setting, or game mode.
  • Inspect the item’s durability; a tool with no remaining durability cannot perform another successful ignition.

The tool broke unexpectedly

Durability is finite and decreases with use. Combine damaged tools before one reaches zero, carry a spare, or prepare an alternative fire source. If you need a long-term tool for repeated ignition, consider Unbreaking or Mending where your edition permits those enchantments.

Edition-specific behavior

Core crafting and portal-lighting behavior is broadly consistent, but the reference material records differences between Java and Bedrock for durability details and some edge interactions. Dispenser ignition and direct creeper ignition are examples documented in Java/Bedrock reference material; do not assume that a behavior observed in one edition works identically in the other.

When a mechanic matters to a build, a redstone device, or a survival plan, check the rules for the exact edition and version running on your world. Updates can change interactions without changing the recipe itself.
