Ghost can organize and style tag archive pages, but its theme translation helper does not translate tag names, descriptions, or posts. Choose your content model first: use separate Ghost installs for distinct language editions, or a translation service for the same content published in multiple languages. Templates and routes can shape the archives, but they are not translation systems.
How do I make Ghost tag pages multilingual?
Start by deciding whether each language will have its own editorial content or whether the same articles will be translated. Ghost’s translation guide recommends one install per language when the content differs, and a translation service such as Weglot or Transifex when publishing the same content in multiple languages. The right choice determines how you manage posts as well as their tag archives.

| Publishing model | Ghost’s recommendation | What it means for tag archives |
|---|---|---|
| Different content in each language | One Ghost install per language, according to Ghost’s translation guide. | Manage each language’s posts and tags in its own publication. Build or adapt the archive template in each install. |
| The same content translated into multiple languages | Use a translation service such as Weglot or Transifex, according to Ghost’s translation guide. | Choose and configure a service to handle translated versions. Check how it treats tag names, descriptions, archive URLs, and SEO metadata. |
The choice is about more than URL structure. Separate installs mean managing distinct Ghost publications; a translation service adds an external service and integration. The workload varies by publication, and neither approach should be assumed to produce particular search-indexing or translation-quality outcomes without checking its configuration.
What Ghost provides for tag archives
Ghost creates archive pages for tags. By default, a tag archive uses /tag/:slug/, and a later page of results uses /tag/:slug/page/:num/. The tag context makes the matching tag, its associated posts, and pagination available to the theme. See Ghost’s tag context documentation.

Choose a template for the archive
A theme can use tag.hbs for tag archives generally, or tag-:slug.hbs for a particular tag. Ghost checks for a matching slug-specific template first, then tag.hbs, then index.hbs. This lets you change archive presentation, not automatically translate its content.
For example, a language-specific tag template could display a localized heading or adjust the layout for that archive. The actual tag name, description, and post fields still need translated content or a translation integration. Tag slugs can be configured in Ghost Admin; the template choice follows the resulting slug.
Use the theme translation helper for interface text only
Ghost’s translate helper localizes theme interface text using the publication language setting. It is appropriate for fixed labels such as “Read more” or navigation copy. Ghost explicitly says the helper is not intended for multilingual content sites; it does not create translated post or tag variants. See Ghost’s translation guide.
Can Ghost routes organize language-specific tag pages?
Yes. Custom routes can change taxonomy paths and define collections filtered by tags. Ghost’s routing documentation includes a language-tag example, so routes can help organize manually curated language archives. See Ghost’s routing documentation.
That organization is not translation. You must still create and maintain the translated post titles, tag names, descriptions, and article content. Before launch, check for route conflicts and confirm that the resulting archive and post URLs are the intended canonical URLs.
Check routing before changing taxonomy paths
- Confirm the tag and author archive paths you intend to retain or replace.
- Check that collections and custom routes do not conflict with one another or with existing paths.
- Open representative tag archives, including a paginated archive where applicable, and confirm they resolve as expected.
- Review canonical URLs and any language-specific SEO metadata in the actual publication and integration.
Ghost warns that changing or removing taxonomy routes incorrectly can cause archives to fail. Routing details depend on the publication’s configuration, so test the configured paths rather than assuming the default URLs remain active.
What to check in a translation-service integration
Ghost documents a Weglot integration using either a language subdomain with a JavaScript snippet or browser-side translation through injected JavaScript. The available approach and its behavior should be evaluated against the URL structure and translation workflow you want. See Ghost’s Weglot integration guide.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Whether translated versions use the URL structure you intend, including any language subdomains.
- How the service handles translated titles, descriptions, and other SEO metadata.
- What language signals and indexing behavior the integration produces; outcomes depend on the chosen configuration.
- Whether the browser-side approach meets your needs for visitors and search engines.
Ghost also names Transifex as an option for translating the same content, but the cited Ghost documentation does not provide a specific Transifex integration recipe. Verify the setup and archive behavior with the service you choose.
Quick Recap
Which approach fits your publication?
- Choose separate installs when language editions publish different articles or maintain distinct editorial schedules.
- Consider a translation service when you want the same articles presented in multiple languages and are prepared to configure and verify an external integration.
- Use templates and routes alongside either approach when you need different archive layouts or language-oriented paths; do not treat them as substitutes for translated content.
- Use the theme translation helper only for theme interface labels tied to the publication language, not for language variants of posts or tags.
