Start with the controls you already know
There is no documented control method that is inherently best for every beginner. If you are comfortable with a controller, begin there; if you are more comfortable with a keyboard and mouse, use those. Familiarity makes it easier to focus on movement, aiming, and the game itself rather than learning a new device at the same time.

To find the settings, open the in-game menu, choose Settings, then select the tab for your input: the gamepad tab for a controller or the keyboard-and-mouse tab for those controls. On PC, controller configuration is available in the relevant settings box. Menu choices can depend on the selected game mode, so check that you have the mode you intend to play selected if an option seems missing. See Epic’s control settings instructions.

Change one setting at a time and try it in a low-pressure session. If movement or aiming feels less comfortable, restore the previous setting before changing something else. There is no universally correct sensitivity value or preset established for beginners, so avoid copying a number just because someone else prefers it.

Practice in Creative before focusing on matches
Creative gives you access to experiences made by Epic and island creators, making it a useful place to get comfortable with controls and explore at your own pace. Experiences vary, and Epic does not identify one specific island as the beginner choice. Start by choosing an experience that lets you practice the actions you find difficult; the Creative interface can change, so look for the current in-game route rather than relying on old menu directions. Epic’s Creative guide describes the mode and its creator-made experiences.
Keep early practice focused: move around, learn how your chosen controls respond, and try the actions you want to improve before adding the pressure of a public match. You do not need to buy a controller, headset, or guide to follow this in-game practice path; the documented options do not establish any particular device as necessary or best for a beginner.

What matchmaking can—and cannot—do for beginners
Epic says Fortnite matchmaking considers player skill, making it more likely that players of similar skill will be matched. That is not a guarantee of beginner-only lobbies or perfectly even matches: players in the same match can have different skill levels. Epic also says opponents may become more skilled as your own skill improves. Its explanation does not establish that every match contains bots or describe enough of the algorithm to predict who you will face. Read Epic’s matchmaking explanation.
Use Ranked only when you want a competitive mode
Ranked is optional; you do not need to enable it to learn Fortnite. Epic says Ranked matchmaking uses your current rank or the highest-ranked teammate’s rank. If you want a more explicitly competitive experience, it is an option—but it is not a shortcut to easier practice. See Epic’s Ranked guide.

New-account prerequisite
Epic’s guide says an account that has never previously been used to log in to Fortnite must complete the “Outlast 500 opponents” quest before Ranked can be enabled in Battle Royale, Zero Build, Reload, or Reload Zero Build. Mode requirements can change, so check the current in-game quest and Ranked availability if the option is not available.

A simple beginner sequence
- Choose your familiar input. Start with controller or mouse and keyboard rather than switching devices to chase a supposed universal advantage.
- Open the matching settings tab. Use the in-game menu, then Settings, and choose the tab for your input and intended mode.
- Adjust one control at a time. Test each change in a low-pressure session and revert any setting that feels worse.
- Explore Creative. Use an experience that gives you room to learn the actions you want to practice.
- Play regular matches at your own pace. Expect matchmaking to consider skill, but not to make every lobby even.
- Try Ranked only if you want that competition. If the account is new to Fortnite, check whether the Outlast quest prerequisite applies.
