How Reliable Are AI Text Watermarks and AI Detectors?

AI text watermarks check for an embedded signal; classifiers estimate whether text looks machine-generated. Both can miss AI text, and classifiers can falsely flag human writing.

AI text watermarks and AI detectors can provide useful clues, but neither is a universal authorship test. A watermark detector looks for a signal added during generation; a classifier estimates whether text resembles machine-generated writing. Both can miss AI-generated text, and classifiers can flag human writing. Treat a result as one piece of evidence, not proof of who wrote a passage.

How do text watermarks and AI detectors work?

They test for different things, so a watermark result and a classifier score should not be read as interchangeable.

Watermark detectors look for an embedded signal

A text watermark is a statistical signal incorporated into a model’s word choices while it generates text. It is intended to be invisible to readers: OpenAI describes its text watermark as adding neither visible marks nor hidden characters. A compatible detector checks for that signal. This approach can only help identify text generated by a system that uses the particular watermark, and the signal can become harder to detect after editing.

Classifiers estimate whether text looks machine-generated

A post-generation classifier examines patterns in text and estimates whether it resembles machine-generated writing. It does not verify a generation-time signal or establish a passage’s complete creation history. A score is an inference, not a record of who typed, edited, or supplied the words.

Provenance and human review are different approaches

NIST groups content-detection approaches into provenance-data checks, such as watermarks or metadata; automated analysis of content patterns; and human-assisted detection. These methods answer different questions. A provenance check can look for a particular signal or record, while a classifier analyzes the text itself. NIST also warns that detection methods may be tied to known generators and may not transfer well to unfamiliar ones.

How reliable are AI text watermarks and AI detectors?

There is no single reliability rate that applies to all tools. Performance depends on the detector and generator, the text’s length, language and genre, how much it has been edited, and the threshold used to limit false alarms. The published results below come from different tests and cannot be combined into one accuracy figure.

Evaluation Reported result What the result means
OpenAI classifier, 2023 English challenge set 26% true-positive identification; 9% false-positive rate The classifier correctly labeled 26% of the AI-written test text as likely AI-written and incorrectly labeled 9% of the human-written test text as AI-written. OpenAI later discontinued it because of low accuracy.
OpenAI text watermark, 2026 evaluated psychology content About 80% detection on 200-token passages and about 95% on 400-token passages, at a target 1% false-positive rate These are vendor-reported results for that genre, text length, and operating point. OpenAI reports substantially lower detection for mathematics.
OpenAI text watermark, current help-page figures for 24 official EU languages 69.0% for Spanish; 42.2% for Romanian, at a 1% false-positive rate These are the highest and lowest detection rates reported on the help page. The page does not display a publication year.
Wang et al., ACL 2024, detectors tested against attacks 35% average performance drop across the evaluated attacks The study tested editing, paraphrasing, co-generation, and prompting attacks. Its result describes the evaluated detectors and attack set, not every current detector.
Kirchenbauer et al., ICLR 2024, watermark method under strong human paraphrasing An average of 800 tokens was needed for detection at a 10-5 false-positive rate This applies to that watermark method and paper’s test conditions. It shows that detection may survive some paraphrasing when enough text is available, not that every watermark survives every rewrite.
Krishna et al., 2023, DetectGPT tested with DIPPER paraphrasing Accuracy fell from 70.3% to 4.6% at a fixed 1% false-positive rate This is the result in that paraphrasing experiment, not a general rate for all classifiers or paraphrasing.

NIST’s 2025 report describes text detection as an evolving evaluation problem. The figures above illustrate why a claim such as “this detector is 95% accurate” is incomplete unless it identifies the test population, text conditions, false-positive rate, and method.

Can AI detectors be wrong?

Yes. A classifier may label human writing as AI-generated, or fail to flag AI-generated writing. The 9% false-positive rate in OpenAI’s 2023 English challenge-set result is one historical example; it is not an estimate for all current tools. A detector’s threshold matters: changing the tolerance for false alarms can change how often it detects AI text.

Watermark detectors can also miss text. The text may come from a generator that does not use the watermark, the detector may not support that generator’s signal, or editing may weaken the signal. Therefore, a negative result means only that the test did not find the signal or pattern it was designed to detect under those conditions. It does not prove that a person wrote the passage unaided.

Can an AI detector prove that I used AI?

No. A classifier score alone cannot establish authorship or prove how a passage was created. A watermark finding can support the narrower claim that the detector found a particular embedded signal, but it does not by itself establish who operated the system, whether a person edited the text, or how the passage was used.

For a consequential decision, treat a score as a reason to investigate rather than as a verdict. Seek corroborating evidence—such as drafts, notes, revision history, or a fair conversation with the author—and consider whether the text’s length, language, genre, and editing make the detector’s result meaningful. OpenAI explicitly cautioned that its former classifier should not be used as a primary decision-making tool.

Does paraphrasing defeat AI detectors?

It can make detection less reliable, but the effect depends on the method, the amount of rewriting, and the test conditions. The studies do not support a universal claim that paraphrasing always defeats detection—or that a watermark always survives it.

Small edits can weaken a watermark

In OpenAI’s 2026 evaluation of 400-token passages, replacing 10% of words with synonyms reduced reported watermark detection from about 92% to 66%; replacing 25% reduced it to 17%. These results apply to that evaluated watermark and setup, not every system or kind of editing.

Paraphrasing has reduced classifier performance in tests

In the 2023 DetectGPT experiment, DIPPER paraphrasing reduced accuracy from 70.3% to 4.6% at a fixed 1% false-positive rate. Wang and co-authors’ 2024 ACL evaluation likewise found an average 35% performance drop across their tested attacks, with almost none of the evaluated detectors robust to all of them. These are study-specific results, not guaranteed outcomes for a particular passage or tool.

Some watermarks can remain detectable in longer text

Kirchenbauer and co-authors reported that their watermark method needed an average of 800 tokens to detect text after strong human paraphrasing at a 10-5 false-positive rate. That result is specific to their method and conditions; it does not contradict the evidence that other watermark signals can be weakened by edits.

How should you compare detector claims?

Before relying on a tool or benchmark, ask what it actually tested. A result is informative only in relation to its generator, sample, language, threshold, and intended use.

  • What is being detected? A specific embedded watermark, a known generation source, or broad patterns associated with AI-like text?
  • Which generator and version were tested? Results on known outputs may not carry over to an unfamiliar model.
  • What were the text conditions? Check passage length, language, genre, human editing, translation, paraphrasing, and whether authorship was mixed.
  • What is the false-positive rate? Look for it alongside the detection rate. A headline accuracy number without an operating threshold can conceal how often human text is flagged.
  • How was the test set assembled? Check whether the samples are representative and whether the evaluation was conducted by the vendor or independently. NIST’s pilot is an evaluation effort, not a universal certification of commercial tools.
  • What happens if the result is wrong? A score that prompts a low-stakes review should not automatically trigger a high-stakes accusation.

What should writers, teachers, and editors do with a score?

Report precisely what the tool did: for example, that a particular classifier assigned a score, or that a particular watermark detector found a signal under stated conditions. Keep the relevant threshold, input length, and test context attached to any quoted performance rate.

Do not describe a detector as identifying the author. A positive classifier result calls for corroboration, not an automatic conclusion; a negative result does not establish human authorship. NIST’s 2025 report captures the broader challenge: “Detection methods for AI-generated content are a constant cat-and-mouse game between the generation and detection communities.”
