Use the concat demuxer to build that fixed playlist before you start. That is different from changing the playlist while the stream is already running: the documented workflow does not guarantee that edits will take effect or that a live cutover will be uninterrupted.
Choose what “switch playlists” means
There are three different workflows people may mean by switching playlists. The right approach depends on whether the content is fixed before launch or must change while live.

| Need | What FFmpeg can do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Play a known sequence of files | Read an ffconcat script with the concat demuxer and process the listed files in order. | Inputs need compatible streams, codecs, and time bases; inaccurate duration information can cause timestamp artifacts. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation. |
| Repeat that fixed sequence | A third-party example uses -stream_loop -1 to loop and -re to pace file input. |
The example is an untested starting point, not a guarantee for every file set or FFmpeg build. Test it in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it. iTechGuides example. |
| Edit the playlist while FFmpeg is running | The cited official FFmpeg documentation does not establish that edits to a list already being read will be picked up. | Do not rely on live edits without reproducing the behavior with your exact FFmpeg build and checking the stream. |
| Cut over between separately running inputs | This is an orchestration problem, not simply a prepared concat playlist. | The sources cited here do not validate a zero-interruption switching architecture. Restarting FFmpeg or changing ingest protocol can affect continuity. |
Prepare a fixed playlist
1. Create the ffconcat script
Make a plain-text file containing the files in playback order. For example:
ffconcat version 1.0
file '/media/segment-a.mp4'
file '/media/segment-b.mp4'
Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg. Quote paths as needed, and follow FFmpeg’s concat-script syntax. The concat demuxer reads the listed files sequentially; it does not turn a playlist into a control panel for live operator switching. See the FFmpeg documentation.

2. Check compatibility and timestamps
- Confirm that the files expose the same streams and compatible codecs and time bases. A list that mixes different stream layouts or incompatible media is not covered by the concat demuxer’s seamless-input assumptions.
- Check duration metadata. FFmpeg uses each file’s duration to set timestamps for the next file, so incorrect duration information may produce gaps or other artifacts.
- Test the actual transitions with the files you intend to stream. Matching file extensions alone does not establish matching streams or timing.
3. Decide whether to loop
If the sequence should play once, do not add a repeat option. For an indefinite repeat, -stream_loop -1 is used in the cited third-party example, with -re to read files at their intended pace. That guide labels its command a starting point and advises testing it; exact options depend on your inputs and FFmpeg build. Do not treat the example as a universal tested command.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube
Use the broadcast’s current credentials
YouTube provides an ingestion address and a stream name for the broadcast. Depending on the encoder, enter them in separate fields or combine them as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. The YouTube Live Streaming API documents the address and stream name in its LiveStreams reference. Keep the stream key private: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or article.

- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Choose RTMPS, not an assumed protocol
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL. Use the RTMPS address supplied for your broadcast; sending cleartext RTMP to a server expecting RTMPS can result in a timeout. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
The exact FFmpeg command depends on whether your files can be copied as-is or need re-encoding, which audio and video streams they contain, the target output settings, and the current ingest configuration YouTube supplies. Build and test the command with your own broadcast credentials rather than copying a key or assuming one command fits every input.

Verify the output before relying on it
- Start a test broadcast using the prepared playlist and the current YouTube ingest address and stream name.
- Check the outgoing picture and audio in YouTube Live Control Room, including the transition from one file to the next.
- Check stream health and let a loop run long enough to observe the repeat boundary if you enabled looping.
- Only use the workflow for a broadcast that needs reliable continuity after you have tested it with the actual files and FFmpeg build.
Why changing protocols does not solve playlist switching
Do not switch from RTMP to DASH in the middle of a broadcast as a playlist-change technique. YouTube says RTMP and DASH ingestion cannot be mixed during the same broadcast, including switching between them. See the DASH ingestion guide.
HLS is a separate ingest protocol, not a shortcut for changing local FFmpeg inputs. YouTube’s HLS requirements include media playlists rather than master playlists, muxed audio and video, HTTPS transport, and segment naming and sequence requirements. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous RTMP-like stream; its developer guide also characterizes HLS ingestion as typically higher latency than RTMP and WebRTC. These requirements do not establish HLS as a simpler live-switching method. See the YouTube HLS help page and HLS ingestion guide.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open a listed file | The path in the script is invalid from the process’s working environment, or quoting is wrong. | Verify each path on the streaming machine and confirm the script follows ffconcat syntax. |
| Playback breaks or artifacts appear at a file boundary | The files may have incompatible streams, codecs, or time bases, or inaccurate duration metadata may be shifting timestamps. | Inspect the actual inputs, correct duration metadata where appropriate, and test transitions before going live. FFmpeg documents these compatibility and duration constraints in its concat demuxer reference. |
| The stream times out while connecting | The broadcast may expect RTMPS while the encoder is trying cleartext RTMP, or the address and stream name may not match the current broadcast. | Use YouTube’s current RTMPS ingestion address and assigned stream name; check the RTMPS guide and LiveStreams reference. |
| A changed playlist does not change the live output | The cited documentation does not establish that an already-running process notices edits to its playlist. | Do not assume live edits are supported. Test the precise behavior on the target build; use a prepared list if all clips are known before launch. |
| The broadcast fails after trying a different ingest protocol | YouTube does not allow RTMP and DASH to be mixed within the same broadcast. | Keep the broadcast on its selected ingest protocol rather than attempting an in-stream protocol change; consult the DASH guide. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
