FFmpeg’s concat demuxer has no documented option to silently skip a missing input file. The dependable fix is to remove missing paths before FFmpeg opens the playlist. If files can disappear while a stream is running, use a supervisor to rebuild the playlist and restart FFmpeg when it fails; that restart may interrupt the live output.
Why FFmpeg stops on a missing concat entry
The concat demuxer reads a text script and processes its listed files in sequence as though their packets had been joined. If a listed local file is absent when FFmpeg tries to open it, the demuxer cannot read that input. YouTube is only the destination in this scenario: the failure occurs at FFmpeg’s local input layer.

FFmpeg’s documentation does not list a silent missing-file skip option for the concat demuxer. In particular, onfail=ignore is not a documented concat-demuxer setting; syntax with that name appears in some FFmpeg contexts, including the tee muxer, where it concerns output failures rather than a missing input.

For a playlist whose contents are known before the broadcast starts, have the script that creates the ffconcat file test every path and include only files that exist. Then give FFmpeg the filtered playlist. This prevents a known missing entry from being opened in the first place.

Use the ffconcat script format correctly
A basic script looks like this:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'For automatic format recognition, ffconcat version 1.0 must be the exact first line. Do not put spaces before it or a byte-order mark at the beginning of the file. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters.
The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1, which rejects paths it considers unsafe. -safe 0 allows any file name, but use it only with a playlist you trust because it relaxes those path restrictions.

Check compatibility before going live
- Confirm every selected file exists at the path written in the playlist.
- Check that the files have the same streams, including codecs and time base. FFmpeg states that the concat demuxer requires matching stream layouts.
- Check durations: incorrect or truncated-file durations can cause timestamp artifacts or gaps between files.
- Use explicit
-mapoptions when you need to control which streams go into the output. Incompatible selected streams or output handling can still make FFmpeg abort.
The demuxer adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and later files follow the preceding file. Unequal stream lengths can leave gaps, so a playlist that opens successfully is not automatically free of timing problems.

If a file can be removed or become unavailable after FFmpeg starts, pre-filtering at launch cannot protect against that runtime change. Use an external supervisor to monitor FFmpeg’s exit status and logs. When the process fails, the supervisor can check which files remain available, generate a fresh valid playlist, and launch FFmpeg again.

- Start FFmpeg with a playlist generated from files that currently exist.
- Monitor the process and its logs for an input-open or read failure.
- After a failure, rebuild the playlist from the files still available; do not retain the missing path.
- Relaunch FFmpeg using the regenerated playlist, then verify the YouTube output has resumed.
This is recovery by restarting the encoder, not a documented seamless in-process skip. A restart can interrupt the live output, so test the supervisor and the resulting YouTube behavior before relying on it for a broadcast.

What YouTube Live can—and cannot—fix
YouTube Live receives the encoded output; it does not change how FFmpeg opens a local file in its concat list. The cited YouTube HLS ingestion guidance discusses HLS playlists and media segments, including unique segment names across encoder restarts. It does not provide a control for skipping a missing local concat input. HLS-specific guidance should not be applied to an RTMP workflow without checking the corresponding current requirements for that protocol.
Troubleshoot a stream that still stops
- FFmpeg reports that it cannot open a file: check the exact path, filename case, permissions, and whether the file still exists where the playlist says it does. Regenerate the list without unavailable entries.
- The playlist is rejected despite existing files: check the first line and path quoting. If the paths are trusted but rejected by the default safety check, consider
-safe 0; it permits paths the default setting rejects. - FFmpeg opens the files but output has gaps or artifacts: inspect durations and stream compatibility. The demuxer expects matching streams, and incorrect duration information can disrupt timestamps.
- The supervisor restarts FFmpeg but YouTube output does not resume as expected: inspect the new process logs and confirm the output configuration and ingestion protocol. YouTube’s HLS restart guidance is protocol-specific and is not a general fix for RTMP.
- The files do not share compatible streams: use the concat filter and re-encode or normalize the inputs instead of relying on stream-copy concatenation.
