FFmpeg’s concat demuxer does not shuffle or enforce a no-repeat rule: it plays files in the order listed. To avoid playing the same episode twice in a row, generate an episode order that forbids adjacent duplicates, save that order as an ffconcat script, and then give the script to FFmpeg.
1. Create an episode order with no adjacent repeats
First choose the files eligible for this run, then generate an ordered list in which each episode appears at most once (if that is your intention) and each item differs from the one immediately before it. The order must be made before FFmpeg runs; the concat demuxer simply consumes the supplied list.

For a small collection where every episode should appear once, you can shuffle the list and check it for adjacent duplicates, reshuffling if necessary. For a more reliable generator, select from the remaining episodes while excluding the previous selection whenever another choice is available. This method can be adapted to repeated episodes by treating each allowed play as a remaining count. A valid order is possible only when the most frequent episode’s remaining count is no greater than the total count of all other episodes plus one.
2. Write the order as an ffconcat script
Save the ordered paths in a plain-text file such as playlist.ffconcat. Its first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 for FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically. Put one file directive on each following line:

3. Concatenate compatible files without re-encoding

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -map 0 -c copy shuffled.mp4-f concat selects the concat demuxer, -safe 0 permits the absolute paths in this example, -i supplies the playlist, and -c copy copies streams rather than re-encoding. This route is suitable only when the inputs can be concatenated as-is. The demuxer expects matching streams and properties, including codecs and time bases. Incorrect duration information can produce timestamp gaps or other artifacts; where needed, provide accurate duration directives or normalize the inputs first.
4. Use the concat filter when conversion is needed
If files have incompatible stream layouts or need conversion to a common format, use FFmpeg’s concat filter workflow and re-encode as appropriate instead of relying on stream copy. The filter is the relevant route when re-encoding is required; the demuxer is preferable when compatible inputs can be joined without re-encoding. 5. Know what the shuffle guarantees
The command above creates one finite output in the order written in the script. It prevents an immediate repeat only within that generated order. It does not choose another episode after the file ends, nor does it create fresh randomness on its own. For ongoing playback, an external playlist generator or player must produce or consume new selections and apply the same no-adjacent-repeat rule at every playlist boundary. The precise integration depends on the player and whether it supports dynamic playlists.
Troubleshooting
- The same episode appears twice in a row: inspect the generated list before invoking FFmpeg. The concat demuxer does not change its order; fix the playlist generator’s selection rule.
- FFmpeg does not recognize the playlist automatically: ensure the very first line is exactly
ffconcat version 1.0, with no text or blank line before it. - Paths with spaces or special characters fail: check the quoting or escaping in each
filedirective against the concat script syntax and test with the affected path. - Stream-copy concatenation fails or produces timestamp problems: compare the inputs’ streams, codecs, time bases, and duration information. Add accurate durations where appropriate, normalize incompatible files, or use the concat filter with re-encoding.
- Playback repeats or stops at the end: the generated MP4 is a finite file. Configure the player or an external generator to supply the next playlist and enforce the constraint across the boundary.

FFmpeg documentation is regenerated nightly; if you use an older installed version, check its local documentation as well. The exact media files and FFmpeg version determine whether stream-copy concatenation is compatible.
