For a dependable YouTube Live picture, inspect each playlist clip and rotate the decoded video frames before encoding. Do not rely on -c:v copy to apply rotation: stream copy does not decode or filter frames. Rotation metadata may work only when the output muxer and the downstream playback path both preserve and honor it.
Why a playlist can appear sideways
A clip can store its rotation as display metadata instead of having its pixels physically rotated. FFmpeg’s option documentation describes -display_rotation as per-stream input metadata that overrides existing display-transform metadata. With transcoding and autorotation enabled, FFmpeg applies rotation during filtering. Otherwise, it writes rotation metadata only if the output muxer supports it.

That distinction matters in a live pipeline: FFmpeg’s metadata behavior does not guarantee that every output format, protocol, YouTube ingest path, or player will honor the transform. Nor does one clip’s transform necessarily suit every item in a playlist. The official documentation does not establish end-to-end rotation behavior for every combination of source, playlist method, FFmpeg build, muxer, and YouTube ingest.

Choose between rotating frames and passing metadata

FFmpeg explains the decode, filter, and encode distinction in its stream-copy documentation. For mixed-orientation clips whose YouTube presentation must be consistent, baking the correct transform into each clip’s encoded frames is the safer default. That recommendation follows from FFmpeg’s documented filtering and metadata behavior; it is not a guarantee about every ingest path.

Normalize and test the playlist, clip by clip

Inspect every source
Use
ffprobeor FFmpeg’s input log to check each clip’s video dimensions and display matrix or rotation metadata. Do not infer the next clip’s orientation from the first: playlist items can carry different transforms. -
Set the intended output geometry
Decide whether the live output should be landscape or portrait and choose consistent output dimensions. Determine the needed transform from each source’s actual metadata and appearance. A fixed angle or one filter for every file is not safe unless inspection shows they all need the same treatment.

Transcode when rotation must be applied to pixels
Decode each video and apply the appropriate
transposeor related video filter before encoding. Do not combine a video filter with-c:v copy: copying bypasses the decoded frames the filter needs. Ensure each playlist item produces the same intended geometry and follow one consistent timing policy.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Check audio separately
Audio can be copied only if its codec and the output container are compatible. Otherwise, encode it to a format supported by the chosen output path. YouTube’s current live encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS and provide configuration guidance; verify the current guidance for the encoder and ingest settings you use.

Match the live encoder settings
Use a supported video codec, a constant bitrate (CBR), and no more than 60 fps, in line with YouTube’s published live guidance. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and sets a four-second maximum. As one resolution-specific example, its current page recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps. Bitrate affects the video delivery configuration; it does not correct rotation.

Test the actual output path
Run a short private or unlisted broadcast using representative clips from the playlist, including any with different orientations. Check the YouTube preview and playback, then monitor stream health. YouTube’s live-streaming tips advise testing representative audio and video movement and monitoring stream health. A local file test alone cannot verify how the complete live path handles orientation.

When metadata-only handling may be appropriate
FFmpeg documents -display_rotation[:stream_specifier] rotation as an input option: its angle is in degrees counter-clockwise before display, and the setting overrides stored rotation metadata. With transcoding, -autorotate applies that transform at the filtering stage. Without that application, writing the transform depends on muxer support.

Insert mode works with rotate and flip; extract mode attaches the display matrix as packet side data. This is H.264 bitstream signaling, not proof that a particular muxer, YouTube ingest path, or playback client will preserve and display the orientation. Use a metadata-only route only when the exact output muxer and downstream path are known to support the transform, and confirm the result with a live-path test. The available official guidance does not promise that rotation metadata survives every playlist-to-YouTube configuration.
Troubleshoot sideways or inconsistent output
- Every clip is sideways: Check whether the source relies on display metadata and whether the output path honors it. If you need reliable orientation, inspect the transform and bake it into the encoded frames.
- Only some playlist items are sideways: Inspect those files individually. Their display transforms or dimensions may differ; normalize each rather than applying an assumed universal angle.
- The filter has no effect: Confirm the video is being decoded and transcoded. With
-c:v copy, no decoded frames reach a filter. - The picture rotates locally but not on YouTube: Do not assume the local player and live ingest path handle display metadata the same way. Test the actual output path; use baked rotation if consistent live display is required.
- Rotation changes cause a size or layout mismatch: Recheck output width and height for every item after the transform. Make the playlist segments conform to the chosen output geometry.
- The stream is unstable or the preview reports an encoding issue: Verify the codec, frame rate, CBR, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then test and monitor stream health.
