Turn on Excel’s automatic capitalization rules
Windows desktop Excel
- Open File > Options.
- Select Proofing, then click AutoCorrect Options.
- On the AutoCorrect tab, select the rules you want. Available capitalization options include Capitalize first letter of sentences, correcting two initial capitals, capitalizing names of days, and correcting accidental Caps Lock use.
- Click OK to apply the settings.
Microsoft documents these AutoCorrect controls for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, Excel 2021, Excel 2019, and Excel 2016. The equivalent preferences and menu path can differ on other platforms or releases, so check the settings available in your version. Microsoft’s AutoCorrect guidance describes the options.

What Excel will—and won’t—capitalize while you type
The built-in options are individual correction rules, not a general case-conversion switch. For example, enabling sentence capitalization does not capitalize the first letter of every word, and it will not make every cell entry uppercase.

This is a text substitution, not a universal title-case setting. If it does not run, confirm that Replace text as you type is selected.

Keep AutoCorrect from changing a particular word
If Excel repeatedly alters a word whose capitalization is intentional, open the AutoCorrect tab and select Exceptions. Microsoft describes an Initial CAps list for words with unusual internal capitalization, such as “IDs,” and a First Letter list for terms that should not prompt sentence-start capitalization after an abbreviation. If a correction happens unexpectedly, press Ctrl+Z to undo it.
Change capitalization in text already in cells
Excel does not have Word’s Change Case button. For existing cell contents, use a formula in a helper column, then check the results before replacing the source data:

=PROPER(A2)capitalizes the first letter of each word-like segment and lowercases the other letters.=UPPER(A2)converts the text to uppercase.=LOWER(A2)converts the text to lowercase.
For example, enter the formula in a blank column beside the original text and fill it down for the rows you need. PROPER can change acronyms, brand styling, and mixed-case identifiers, so inspect those cases. Microsoft explains these functions in its case-conversion guidance.

Flash Fill is useful for transforming existing rows based on a pattern, but it is not the AutoCorrect rule that changes a matching typed string. The documented Flash Fill launch steps vary between Windows and macOS; Microsoft covers supported desktop versions, including Excel for Mac, in its Flash Fill instructions.
