| Plan | Apple Music | Spotify | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual | $11.99/month | $12.99/month | Apple Music is $1/month less at the listed US rates. |
| Student | $6.99/month | $6.99/month | The listed prices match. Check student eligibility and verification terms; Spotify says eligible student offers include Hulu access subject to eligibility. |
| Two people | No comparable two-person plan stated on the cited Apple page | Duo: $18.99/month for two people at the same address | Spotify Duo may suit two eligible household members who do not need a six-person plan. |
| Family | $19.99/month for up to six people | $21.99/month for up to six people at the same address | Apple Music is $2/month less at the listed rates. Spotify’s address rule is part of the plan comparison. |
At the listed rates, Apple’s Individual plan costs $12 less per year than Spotify’s, and its Family plan costs $24 less per year. Those calculations assume the prices remain unchanged for all 12 months. Spotify’s Duo plan is a distinct option for two people; do not compare it as if it covered the same household size as Family.

Which service has the features you want?
Choose Apple Music for classical, Spatial Audio, or Apple’s Hi-Res Lossless tier
Apple includes Apple Music Classical with its listed Student, Individual, and Family plans. Its service also offers Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, real-time lyrics, and lyric translations. Apple says its catalog contains more than 100 million songs and is available in lossless audio at different resolutions; that vendor-published catalog figure does not establish that every recording is available in every country or that the catalog overlaps completely with Spotify’s.
Choose Spotify for a wider mix of listening formats and social features
Spotify highlights Jam, Blend, DJ, podcasts, and music videos. It also says its audiobook subscriber catalog contains more than 700,000 titles, with availability and included listening hours depending on plan and eligibility. These are Spotify-published figures and features, not a guarantee that every title or feature is available to every subscriber.

| Service | Published lossless specification | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music | Lossless up to 48 kHz; Hi-Res Lossless from 48 to 192 kHz | Apple says files use more bandwidth and storage than standard AAC. On iPhone, Hi-Res playback above 48 kHz requires an external DAC. |
| Spotify Premium | Lossless up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC | Spotify lists support in mobile, desktop, and tablet apps and compatible Spotify Connect devices. Its app adjusts quality by default to help avoid stuttering. |
Apple lists a higher maximum sample rate, but a format ceiling is not a listening test or proof of audible superiority. Spotify recommends Wi-Fi or a strong data connection for best performance with lossless listening.
Do you need a DAC for Apple Music on iPhone?
Only for a specific setup: Apple says an external digital-to-analog converter is required to play Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz on iPhone. You do not need to buy a DAC for ordinary listening or for Apple’s lossless playback up to 48 kHz. If you do use one, check that its connector works with your iPhone and that it supports your headphones or speakers.

Which service should you choose?
- Pick Apple Music if the lower listed US Individual or Family price matters, you want Apple Music Classical or Spatial Audio, or you specifically want the option of Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz with suitable equipment.
- Pick Spotify if you want a two-person Duo plan, or expect to use features such as Jam, Blend, DJ, podcasts, music videos, eligible audiobook listening, or its broad documented device compatibility.
- Compare both student plans on eligibility and benefits rather than price: their listed US monthly rates are equal, and Spotify’s Hulu offer is subject to eligibility.
- Check your household and devices first: family membership rules differ, and not every device supports every audio feature.
Neither service’s catalog-size claim settles whether it has a particular artist, album, or recording where you live. If a specific release matters, search for it in each service’s catalog before choosing.
