The way to enlarge an emoji on WhatsApp depends on where it appears. For an emoji or sticker placed on a photo or video, pinch it in the media editor. For an emoji typed into a regular chat, WhatsApp does not document a separate size control; you can try your phone’s text or display accessibility settings to improve readability, though the effect on emoji size may vary.
First, identify where the emoji appears
- In an ordinary chat message: Adjust your phone’s text or display settings if you need messages to be easier to read. WhatsApp does not document a setting to enlarge one inline emoji independently. WhatsApp’s accessibility guidance describes device-level options.
- On a photo or video: Add the emoji or sticker in WhatsApp’s media editor, then pinch to change its size. This resizes the overlay, not emoji characters in a regular text message. See WhatsApp’s photo and video editing instructions.
Make chat text easier to see on Android
Android provides controls for font size, display size, and magnification. The exact Settings layout can differ by device and Android version, so use Settings search if the labels or path are different.

- Open your phone’s Settings and search for Font size.
- Move the slider to increase text size. If you also want larger interface elements, return to Settings and search for Display size, then adjust that slider.
- Check a WhatsApp conversation to see whether the change helps. Google notes that font-size settings do not apply in some apps, so this may not enlarge every WhatsApp emoji. Google’s Android text and display guide explains these controls.
For a temporary closer look at part of the screen, WhatsApp’s accessibility information also points to Android zoom or magnification options. This magnifies the screen rather than changing the size of an individual emoji in the message.

Make chat text easier to see on iPhone
WhatsApp documents two iPhone routes for changing text size. The labels may vary slightly by iOS version:

- For the standard text-size control, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size, then adjust the slider.
- For larger accessibility text, open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Larger Text, enable larger accessibility sizes if needed, and move the slider.
WhatsApp warns that enabling Larger Accessibility Sizes can make profile photos and group icons unavailable in WhatsApp. These iPhone controls adjust text or interface readability; they are not a WhatsApp-only control for one inline emoji. Resize an emoji on a WhatsApp photo or video
- Open the photo or video in WhatsApp’s media editor.
- Add an emoji or sticker using the editor’s emoji/sticker option.
- Place two fingers on the overlay and pinch outward to enlarge it, or pinch inward to shrink it.
- To reposition it, touch and hold the overlay, then drag it where you want it.
The pinch gesture applies to an emoji or sticker overlay in the media editor. It does not enlarge an emoji typed into a chat message.

Which adjustment should you use?

If the emoji still looks small
- Confirm whether you are changing an emoji in a message or an overlay on media; only the overlay has a documented pinch-to-resize gesture.
- On Android, try Display size or magnification if a font-size change does not affect WhatsApp. App behavior can vary.
- On iPhone, Larger Accessibility Sizes can alter WhatsApp’s layout, including whether profile photos and group icons are available.
- If you cannot find a setting, search Settings for the named control. Operating-system labels and paths vary across versions and devices.
